Light maze for Luneng Sanya Bay Light and Art Festival yǔzhòu is an immersive light installation we were commissioned for the newly created Luneng Sanya Bay Light and Art Festival in Hainan, China. The installation consists of a maze based on a triangular geometry and built of 2,5m high panels of acrylic glass. A dichroic film glued to one side of the acrylic glass converts the panels in semi-transparent and reflects or shifts the light rays along the entire colour range of a rainbow while the spectator moves in the installation. On the other side of each acrylic glass sheet, a specifically created pattern of grooves is mechanically carved in. The grooves are illuminated by powerful LED rails with subtly shifting colours located in the inferior and superior framework. Increase milk production (an 8 percent) and reduce energy consumption with long day lighting Research over the past 33 years has shown that long-day lighting (LDL) has a significant positive impact on milk production in dairy cows. LDL refers to increasing the daily light photoperiod for milk herds to 16 to 18 hours at intensity of 15 to 20 foot-candles of light, followed by a dark period of 8 to 6 hours of three foot-candles or less of light. However, Michigan dairy farmers have been unsuccessful in attaining the full benefits of LDL due to technical difficulties in measuring/maintaining light intensity and appropriately controlling the lighting system. This design allows the user to effectively swipe where they want or need light, turning the walls into a canvas for illumination using their hand as the brush. The combination of modularity and the lighting controls equals a product that can be completely tailored by the user. A finger touch turns the panels on and off This product consists of multiple plastic hexagons that can be connected together via magnets and interlocking patterns to form a touch screen wall light. The magnets that form the physical connection between components also allow the electricity to pass through from one piece to another. The underlying idea for the product is to give the user the ability to turn the interior architecture of a space into the light source. Dynamic Elation Lighting Enhancement for Rouyn-Noranda City Hall in Québec The city of Rouyn-Noranda in western Québec, Canada, is understandably proud of its beautifully-designed city hall building. Serving as the administrative building for the region’s municipal government while also serving as an important cultural gathering place, its distinctive architectural design also makes it an important city landmark. In order to highlight the building’s modern architecture after dark, as well as Citizenship and Cooperation Square, which borders the building, Rouyn-Noranda’s city government sought a dynamic exterior lighting scheme. Both the city hall and the square are located in the heart of the city, Citizenship and Cooperation Square being a favorite location for various citizen gatherings. “Not only did they want to make citizens proud of their city by highlighting the building architecture with a dynamic lighting solution, they also wanted to promote the city center’s culture and make this a place of meeting for all citizens,” explains Ariane Cambron of XYZ Cultural Technology (xyz-tc.com/en), the AV integration company contracted by the city to draft and design an architectural lighting solution for the city hall and square. The brief called for two lighting systems, one to light the outside of the city hall building and the second to light Citizenship and Cooperation Square. Both systems needed to be discreet and well adapted to the surroundings. “There was to be no light penetration inside the building and minimal light pollution,” Cambron says, “so we avoided uplighting. Since everything was exterior, the spots and the system had to be small but powerful.” The lighting upgrade was completed in January of 2016 and consists of IP-rated Elation Professional LED lighting: 29 ELAR Q1™ color-changing Par lights, 5 ELAR EXTQW FLOOD HP™ color-changing wash lights and a SixPar 300 IP™ color-changing Par fixture. “The small footprint of LED was important as was RGBW on all fixtures,” Cambron said. “Also, as the throw distances are pretty substantial they had to have great output.” The Elation fixtures are located at multiple locations on the exterior façade of the building with the ELAR Q1s downlighting a series of columns and ELAR Floods and ELAR Q1s washing several areas of the building’s façade. Because Rouyn-Noranda experiences all the harsh weather that comes with a Canadian winter, another important feature of the fixtures was an IP65 rating at minimum. “The fixtures had to be exceptionally robust to be able to withstand the frigid Abitibian winter climate,” Cambron says, “which often reaches 20 degrees below zero Celsius.” Rouyn-Noranda is the capital of the Abitibi-Temiscamingue administrative region in Québec. XYZ Cultural Technology served as the principal contractor and technical director on the project, handling design, equipment supply, integration and programming. Lighting design was by XYZ Cultural Technology’s Garou Blancan with XYZ’s François Cyr helping with the installation’s infrastructure. The lighting system is controlled via wireless DMX, which not only made for a cleaner installation with less cabling but also lets the city easily change the color scheme to highlight important events. Both the lighting on the building and in the square run off the same system, allowing for synchronized lighting schemes. The versatile architectural lighting solution has allowed Rouyn-Noranda city hall to emerge at night in a dress of customizable color and has given the city the flexibility to bathe the building in any color they choose. This illuminated arch rises up out of the water and surrounds a foot bridge in Austin, Texas East Side Collective, a co-working design studio featuring co-founder Tim Derrington and member Wilson Hanks, along with Drophouse Design have recently worked together to create a temporary installation as part of the Waller Creek Conservancy’s “Creek Show“, in Austin, Texas. “Deep Curiosity” is an illuminated arch that rises up out of the water and surrounds a foot bridge over the Waller Creek to create the illusion of a never ending circle that inspires imaginative thought and an appreciation for both the natural and man-made elements found in and around the same area. The light installation is made from strips of curved steel that have been welded and formed into a curved arch. The arch is made up of sections that were constructed in a warehouse and were later assembled on site in the water and above the bridge. The partially submerged circular form combines reality with the power of illusion to encourage people to think about and appreciate the complexity of the creek and celebrate the possibility of future perfection in the Waller Creek area.   15. Wayfinding : Connecting Spaces Wayfinding — the manner in which people orient themselves in a physical space and then navigate within it — is a critical component in design. One Seattle lighting company has developed a decorative and seamless solution. Today’s wide range of office layouts presents numerous design challenges, especially as it relates to wayfinding. LightArt, a 3form company, is a custom lighting fabrication and design studio based in Seattle that is illuminating the art of wayfinding through its LA2 Connected Collection. The company’s approach was developed in response to current market demands. “We saw an increasing need for connecting and organizing more open air spaces,” says Ryan Smith, President & Creative Director of LightArt. “Everyone always appreciates a bright arrow, and when you’re following that path, it just makes things easy.” Connected, he adds, is about being bold. Technology in lighting is continuing to evolve in extremely dynamic This new evolution in lighting design promotes an innovative use of color, form, pattern, and brand features to visually connect spaces with a simple solution for architects and designers to employ. The line’s fixtures – available as a standardized kit of 12 Shapes – can be bought individually and assembled in a range of unique configurations to suit any particular project’s needs. We had to ask for that change within their supply to take place.” While the work has been exhilarating, there have been challenges. “The most demanding part of these projects has been when someone asks for something outside of the standard Connected system, and we have to make custom parts,” Smith notes. “For the most part, we’ve been able to fine-tune the Connected system to provide designers with a line of lighting that looks custom, but is also easy to order and easy to install.” In terms of creative inspiration, there are some lighting styles from the past that have sparked a design aesthetic and have acted as cultural touch points that influence LightArt’s products. “A lot of the lighting from the 1950s inspired us,” Smith says. “It was always about simplicity. When some of the ornamentation went away, you started to see beautiful fixtures like Noguchi or Nelson — those really timeless pieces.” In terms of present-day trends that LightArt sees from their client base, a desire for continued innovation that’s eye catching remains foremost top of mind. “We are seeing a move from functional lighting to people wanting something with more design, as well as more material and/or color interest, and because of that, we are receiving a lot of good responses from the wayfinding solutions that Connected provides,” adds Smith. “We are seeing a lot of interest in using lighting to express custom branding and design, plus a need for fixtures or finishes that serve more than one function in a space. For instance, lighting that serves as a both a wayfinding element and a source of light.” As for the future, there are plenty of aspects of the lighting industry that will continue to motivate the LightArt team. The engineering development unit arrived by truck, was offloaded and transported to a laboratory at the Space Station Processing Facility. Inside the lab, NASA engineers, and scientists and technicians will train with the test unit to learn how to handle and assemble it before the actual APH unit arrives early next year. They also will test how the science integrates with the various systems of the plant habitat. The unit is a closed-loop system with a controlled environment than can house large plants. The system will use red, green and blue LED lights, similar to the Veggie growth system that is currently on the International Space Station. Unique visual stimulation may be new treatment for Alzheimer’s “…f humans behave similarly to mice in response to this treatment, I would say the potential is just enormous, because it’s so noninvasive, and it’s so accessible,” says Li-Huei Tsai, the Picower Professor of Neuroscience, when describing a new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Using LED lights flickering at a specific frequency, MIT researchers have shown that they can substantially reduce the beta amyloid plaques seen in Alzheimer’s disease, in the visual cortex of mice. This treatment appears to work by inducing brain waves known as gamma oscillations, which the researchers discovered help the brain suppress beta amyloid production and invigorate cells responsible for destroying the plaques. Further research will be needed to determine if a similar approach could help Alzheimer’s patients, says Li-Huei Tsai, the Picower Professor of Neuroscience, director of MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, and senior author of the study, which appears in the Dec. 7 online edition of Nature. “It’s a big ‘if,’ because so many things have been shown to work in mice, only to fail in humans,” Tsai says. “But if humans behave similarly to mice in response to this treatment, I would say the potential is just enormous, because it’s so noninvasive, and it’s so accessible.” Tsai and Ed Boyden, an associate professor of biological engineering and brain and cognitive sciences at the MIT Media Lab and the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, who is also an author of the Nature paper, have started a company called Cognito Therapeutics to pursue tests in humans. The paper’s lead authors are graduate student Hannah Iaccarino and Media Lab research affiliate Annabelle Singer. “This important announcement may herald a breakthrough in the understanding and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, a terrible affliction affecting millions of people and their families around the world,” says Michael Sipser, dean of MIT’s School of Science. “Our MIT scientists have opened the door to an entirely new direction of research on this brain disorder and the mechanisms that may cause or prevent it. I find it extremely exciting.” Researchers in Li-Huei Tsai's laboratory at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory have shown that disrupted gamma waves in the brains of mice with Alzheimer’s disease can be corrected by a unique non-invasive technique using flickering light. Brain wave stimulation Alzheimer’s disease, which affects more than 5 million people in the United States, is characterized by beta amyloid plaques that are suspected to be harmful to brain cells and to interfere with normal brain function. Previous studies have hinted that Alzheimer’s patients also have impaired gamma oscillations. These brain waves, which range from 25 to 80 hertz (cycles per second), are believed to contribute to normal brain functions such as attention, perception, and memory. In a study of mice that were genetically programmed to develop Alzheimer’s but did not yet show any plaque accumulation or behavioral symptoms, Tsai and her colleagues found impaired gamma oscillations during patterns of activity that are essential for learning and memory while running a maze. Next, the researchers stimulated gamma oscillations at 40 hertz in a brain region called the hippocampus, which is critical in memory formation and retrieval. These initial studies relied on a technique known as optogenetics, co-pioneered by Boyden, which allows scientists to control the activity of genetically modified neurons by shining light on them. Using this approach, the researchers stimulated certain brain cells known as interneurons, which then synchronize the gamma activity of excitatory neurons. After an hour of stimulation at 40 hertz, the researchers found a 40 to 50 percent reduction in the levels of beta amyloid proteins in the hippocampus. Stimulation at other frequencies, ranging from 20 to 80 hertz, did not produce this decline. Tsai and colleagues then began to wonder if less-invasive techniques might achieve the same effect. Tsai and Emery Brown, the Edward Hood Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience, a member of the Picower Institute, and an author of the paper, came up with the idea of using an external stimulus — in this case, light — to drive gamma oscillations in the brain. The researchers built a simple device consisting of a strip of LEDs that can be programmed to flicker at different frequencies. Using this device, the researchers found that an hour of exposure to light flickering at 40 hertz enhanced gamma oscillations and reduced beta amyloid levels by half in the visual cortex of mice in the very early stages of Alzheimer’s. However, the proteins returned to their original levels within 24 hours. The researchers then investigated whether a longer course of treatment could reduce amyloid plaques in mice with more advanced accumulation of amyloid plaques. After treating the mice for an hour a day for seven days, both plaques and free-floating amyloid were markedly reduced. The researchers are now trying to determine how long these effects last. Furthermore, the researchers found that gamma rhythms also reduced another hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease: the abnormally modified Tau protein, which can form tangles in the brain. “What this study does, in a very carefully designed and well-executed way, is show that gamma oscillations, which we have known for a long time are linked to cognitive function, play a critical role in the capacity of the brain to clean up deposits,” says Alvaro Pascual-Leone, a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School who was not involved in the research. “That’s remarkable and surprising, and it opens up the exciting prospect of possible translation to application in humans.” Tsai’s lab is now studying whether light can drive gamma oscillations in brain regions beyond the visual cortex, and preliminary data suggest that this is possible. They are also investigating whether the reduction in amyloid plaques has any effects on the behavioral symptoms of their Alzheimer’s mouse models, and whether this technique could affect other neurological disorders that involve impaired gamma oscillations. Two modes of action The researchers also performed studies to try to figure out how gamma oscillations exert their effects. They found that after gamma stimulation, the process for beta amyloid generation is less active. Gamma oscillations also improved the brain’s ability to clear out beta amyloid proteins, which is normally the job of immune cells known as microglia. “They take up toxic materials and cell debris, clean up the environment, and keep neurons healthy,” Tsai says. In Alzheimer’s patients, microglia cells become very inflammatory and secrete toxic chemicals that make other brain cells more sick. However, when gamma oscillations were boosted in mice, their microglia underwent morphological changes and became more active in clearing away the beta amyloid proteins. “The bottom line is, enhancing gamma oscillations in the brain can do at least two things to reduced amyloid load. One is to reduce beta amyloid production from neurons. And second is to enhance the clearance of amyloids by microglia,” Tsai says. The researchers also sequenced messenger RNA from the brains of the treated mice and found that hundreds of genes were over- or underexpressed, and they are now investigating the possible impact of those variations on Alzheimer’s disease.
