"Arrangements": The New Contemporary Lighting Design Series for Flos Michael Anastassiades presented Flos newest contemporary lighting design series: Arrangements. The designer explained that the series is, at its essence, “a modular system of geometric light elements that could be combined in different ways, creating multiple compositions as individual chandeliers“. “Each unit simply attaches onto the previous one as if resting, balancing perfectly as part of a glowing chain“, explained the designer. These almost architectural pieces can be carefully twisted and warped, creating an unusual intersection of fields: lighting and jewelry design. “I have always been fascinated with the parallel that exists between lighting and jewelry. starting from the simple fact of how each piece relates to the human scale: one is designed to be worn on the body whereas the other is made to decorate the space someone occupies”, said Anastassiades. The designer also mentioned that he’s “challenged by how the delicate nature of something small can be translated spatially and still manage to retain its preciousness in the way materials are presented. It is no coincidence that the word ‘pendant’ has a double meaning. existing both as a piece of jewelry that hangs from a chain worn round the neck, and a light designed to hang from the ceiling.” Source: designboom

  4. LED lights are absolutely important these days for households and commercial places. A place like stadium or auditorium needs proper lighting arrangements. If there is no proper lighting, you shall find that a lot of problems would occur in conducting sporting events or conferences or cultural programs on the stadium. Moreover, in this era of modernization, every stadium needs to be renovated so that they give more safety as well as comfort to the spectators. This will help increasing revenue collection of the stadium. This is why you need 400w LED flood light for the stadium. The advantage of using LED lights shall be discussed in the following section of this article. 1. Environment Friendly Lighting Solution LED lights give environment friendliness, as it consumes lesser power or electricity. Basically, the mechanism of illumination of LED lights is completely different from the mechanism of traditional lighting systems. Florescent lights get heated up after certain time and they start consuming more and more power. Nevertheless, they release heat which can cause damages to the environment, contributing significant amount of heat to the global warming. To protect environment, it is better to adopt LED lights in place of the traditional lights. LED lights work more seamlessly and they prevent wastage of energy. 2. High End Efficiency and Durability Since LED lights do not get heated up, some people think that they would not offer the best illumination. In reality, you shall get perfect illuminating effects from LED lights. These lights are made to serve users for a long time. Durability is a factor that makes LED lights so popular these days. Once installed, the LED lights can serve you for at least 20 years without any significant maintenance cost. On the other hand, orthodox fluorescent lights last around 5-10 years maximum. 3. Colorful Lighting Solutions Arranging colorful LED lighting solution is quite a cost-effective thing. Stadiums often need to hold inaugural ceremonies for various sporting events or tournaments. For this purpose, colorful lighting will be required. That can be attained with the stylish as well as contemporary colorful LED lights. For colorful lighting, no additional cost is required. This is one of the biggest advantages of LED lighting. 4. Heavy-duty Illumination With LED lighting solutions, you shall get heavy-duty illuminating solutions. You can opt for 1000 Watt LED light which shall give excellent lighting solution for the stadium without any hassles. Lights would not get warm even after being illuminated for long time. One can easily keep LED lights illuminated for 10 hours to 12 hours for the purpose of stadium flood lighting. 5. Amazing Cost-effectiveness The best thing about LED lights is that they are highly cost-effective. You can save your money by opting for LED lighting solutions. Stadiums need heavy duty lighting solutions and thus the stadium authority has to pay high electricity consumption bills. With LED lights, initial investment would be high, but cost-effective on the long run can be attained. It will lower down power consumption and thus would make your monthly bills reasonable. LED lights would also last long without any maintenance requirements.

  8. The Gantry Restaurant and Bar, Sydney Architect: Bates Smart Lighting design: Electrolight Product: VarioLED™ Flex VENUS White TV IP67 Customer: Pier One Sydney / The Gantry Restaurant and Bar Location: Sydney, Australia Photos: Rohan Venn Photography With spectacular views of Walsh Bay and the majestic Sydney Harbour, “The Gantry Restaurant and Bar” is one of the best waterfront restaurant locations in Sydney. Steeped in maritime history since 1912, The Gantry’s name pays homage to the original structures on iconic Pier One. The design by architectural firm Bates Smart combines industrial roots with a contemporary slick fitout with exposed pillars, steel framing, elegant furniture and timber flooring with rich, dark, moody lighting. From the reception area, the eye is drawn to the imposing bar with custom built boat-shaped lights floating above. Driven by the atmosphere of the location, Electrolight created this custom light sculpture. They drew inspiration from the “organic form and movement of the ocean’s creatures and the way modern yachts replicate these movements”. The work, named ‘Squelette’ was conceptualized by the Electrolight Sydney team and appointed to Axolotl for manufacturing. The lighting inside the unique sculpture is the VarioLED™ Flex VENUS TV in W827 – a fully flexible protected light line that could be adhered to the inside of the Squelette, creating an internal sculptural glow. The end result is an impressive light sculpture that is in perfect harmony with its environment. For additional information, please visit www.led-linear.com

Tatsuo Miyajima: Connect with Everything A heady synthesis of modern technology, Buddhist philosophy and visceral experience, Tatsuo Miyajima: Connect with Everything open at the MCA. Tatsuo Miyajima is one of Japan’s most renowned contemporary artists, known for his sculptures and room-scale installations incorporating light and numbers. Tatsuo Miyajima: Connect With Everything is Miyajima’s first exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere. It encompasses his sculptural works, rooms and environments, and performance videos. Time and its passage are explored through the works and represented visually by multiple, small digital counting devices. Miyajima developed his first customised digital counters in the late 1980s, using light emitting diodes or LEDs. These ‘counter gadgets’ remain central to his art today, their red and green palette expanding in the mid-1990s to include blue, then white, as LED technology developed in and beyond Japan. 13. intu Victoria Centre, Nottingham » Retail Lighting Design The £40 million re-model and refresh of intu Victoria Centre, Nottingham has transformed the Centre’s tired appearance, creating a vibrant and bold retail interior. Optelma worked with lighting designers Hoare Lea Lighting to design and develop large, bespoke feature pendants that would work with the scale of the central mall. Suspended in the skylight bays, these elegant two-metre-high moulded ‘Conico’ pendants are key elements, which visually separate the retail spaces from the food and beverage courts, while softening the overall impression. The custom-built pendants feature RGBW LEDs which enable a dynamic, yet subtle, uniform colour-change to take place throughout the day. This mirrors the colour-change within the walkways, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated visual appearance. Each Conico pendant has a 3000lm Xicato downlight built into the base, providing general illumination beneath as well as a platform for the emergency lighting. Martin Breeden Development Director of intu commented: ‘The refurbishment of intu Victoria Centre has enhanced the centre’s look and feel throughout, and the lighting design has really complemented this, helping us to achieve a modern and welcoming environment.' Refresh of intu Victoria Centre in Nottingham included a full upgrade, with the aim of transforming the Centre’s tired appearance and creating a fresh, exciting interior, while introducing a lit personality to the façade. In addition, the project delivered a prominent new southern entrance and a two-level catering cluster centred on the Grade II listed clock tower. Hoare Lea Lighting was appointed by intu to design a new lighting scheme for intu Victoria Centre. To give the interior a fresh dynamism, many of the finishes were taken back to the primary structure before new layers were applied. The remodelling has allowed the daylight function to be enhanced and for the integration of energy-efficient artificial lighting. This has enabled the creation of a softly lit environment, in which strong visual architecture is supported by lighting. Linear forms characterise the architectural enhancements and this language is echoed in the lighting design. Indirect linear lighting to the soffit provides ambient light (from ACDC’s Orelle) in a fresh 4000K white light. This contrasts with the warmer, more relaxing treatment of 3000K within the food and beverage courts. Here, linear ‘tramlines’ of light, from KKDC’s Lini Glow XL, run across the ceiling, their architectural forms spilling into the main malls, adding an exuberant feel and giving a playful visual lead from one space to the next. Hidden sources and integrated lighting combine with white light and RGB colour-change for a clean, dynamic feel. On the walkways, soft washes from hidden lines-of-light are punctuated by pools of light created by spotlights and downlights from Lumenpulse/ AlphaLED and iGuzzini. Peripheral coves running parallel with the walkways are washed with a hidden RGBW linear product (Traxon’s 1PXL Cove Light), which allows for a subtle, slow, uniform colour-change throughout the day. This colour change is mirrored by RGBW feature pendants in the central mall, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated visual appearance. Suspended in the skylight bays, the ‘Conico’ pendants, custom-built by Optelma, are key visual features which work to visually separate the main retail mall spaces from the food and beverage courts, while softening the overall impression of the malls. Commenting on the design, Chris Fox, Senior Lighting Designer, Hoare Lea said: ‘The approach we took was that of ‘lighting through layers’ – combining direct and indirect sources to build a visual scene with various options. Control allows dimming of groups of luminaires to create scenes and for the switching between pre-programed scenes throughout the day. ‘ The exterior of the Centre has been transformed, with the dated 1970s brutalist concrete facade now clad in a clean, contemporary finish. As night falls, the back-lit cladding comes alive with light and colour. White light follows the building’s form, washing each panel in a neutral 4000K, supplied by Osram’s LINEARLight Power Flex. The cladding surrounding the main entrance has a linear wash. DMX feeds give control over each panel and, using a bespoke RGB lensed product from NJO Technology, turn the entrance into an eye-catching media façade. The Clock Tower, an icon on the Nottingham cityscape, has been given a traditional uplight treatment, which complements the architecture, while contrasting with the new backlit entrance cladding and glazed entrance. Ground-recessed uplights, from Bega, illuminate the red brickwork in 3000K, while spotlights (ACDC’s Plaza) pick out the higher levels and the clock face. Martin Breeden Development Director of intu commented: ‘The £40m refurbishment of intu Victoria Centre has enhanced the centre’s look and feel throughout, and the lighting design has really complemented this, helping us to achieve a modern and welcoming environment.’ Source: optelma, retaildesignblog, hoarelealighting
  14. Testing of OLED Luminaires The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released CALiPER Report 24: Photometric Testing, Laboratory Teardowns, and Accelerated Lifetime Testing of OLED Luminaires, which is the first CALiPER report evaluating the performance of OLED luminaires based on independent procurement and testing. Among the findings: Overall, efficacy of the OLED luminaires was low compared to contemporary LED luminaires, ranging from 23 lm/W up to 45 lm/W. OLED panels range between 42 and 55 lm/W according to panel manufacturer data, and much of the efficacy reduction in the luminaire performance is due to very inefficient transformer and driver selections and combinations. The wider availability of dedicated OLED drivers should improve efficacies in the near future. Light distribution was consistent among the tested products – a soft, diffuse, roughly Lambertian emission, moderated only by the physical configuration of the luminaire hardware. This is expected to produce very soft shadows from objects in the path of the light, and patterns of light on surfaces with very soft gradients at the edges of the “beam.” The drivers for all four CALiPER luminaire types were different, with some luminaires using a single driver and others using a combination of electronic components for voltage transformation, conversion from AC to DC, and voltage/current control. The OLED luminaires performed very closely to the manufacturers’ published technical data, where available. OLED panels, drivers, and transformers are still in a steep curve of development. Goals are higher efficacy; longer life, before panel replacement on the jobsite is needed; better lumen maintenance over time; even better color quality and wider CCT options; higher-efficiency drivers; and robustness under high temperature, high humidity, and rough handling from shipping and installation. Improvements in these areas could make OLED luminaires more accepted in the architectural marketplace, and adopted as a trusted lighting solution. For a closer look at the findings, download the full report Testing of OLED Luminaires (3.68 MB).pdf Rubik from Mark Architectural Lighting Source: http://energy.gov, acuitybrands
