NEW RESEARCH PROVES WHITENESS AND COLOR RENDERING HAS A STRONG EFFECT ON LED LAMP PREFERENCE
While Most LEDs Just Illuminate, Soraa’s Full Visible Spectrum Lamps Make Colors and Whites Pop

Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, announced today new psychophysical research proving that whiteness and color rendering have a strong effect on the perception of energy-efficient LED lighting. The study was approved by an Institutional Review Board and led by Kevin Houser at Penn State University.

Скрытый текст

Compared with conventional blue-based LEDs, study participants overwhelmingly preferred the whiteness and color rendering of Soraa’s full visible spectrum lamps with Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) technology. Like conventional electric light sources such as incandescent and halogen lamps, Soraa’s lamps emit full visible spectrum light which renders warm, saturated colors—including important colors like reds and bright greens. Furthermore, these lamps excite Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) in white objects like clothing, paper and plastics, making them look intentionally whiter. However, in their race to create maximally efficient, cheap products, most LED manufacturers skipped parts of the spectrum. This has resulted in blue-LED based lighting products that cannot truly render whiteness or colors.

Uniquely, Soraa’s full visible spectrum lamps with VP₃ Natural White are engineered to emit all colors of the rainbow, including violet, which excites OBAs and perfectly renders whites. The research study at Penn State showed that the vast majority of participants preferred objects rendered under Soraa’s full visible spectrum light over standard LED light that lacked the short wavelength range of the spectrum. In fact, whether looking at a white dress shirt or their own smile, 90% of users preferred the whiteness rendering provided by Soraa’s lamps.

As for colors, study participants commented that colors were more saturated, vibrant and attractive under Soraa’s full visible spectrum LED lamps with VP₃ Vivid Color (color rendering index (CRI) of 95 and R9 of 95) versus the blue-based LED lamps with a standard CRI of 85 and R9 of 0. The research showed that the company’s VP₃ technology rendered colors with high fidelity and no change in saturation; and the colors accurately matched the reference halogen lamp. This was true not only for colored objects, but also for participants’ skin complexions.

“There are those who’ve asked: does color and whiteness rendering really matter? Well, it does, and we now have the data to prove it,” said Mike Krames, CTO of Soraa. “Because all of our lamps render the entire visible spectrum, white fabrics and paper goods pop, plastics are brilliant and people’s smiles are whiter, and colors are more natural and beautiful. That’s good news for consumers and retailers, who want and deserve the enormous economic and environmental benefits of LED lighting, but are unwilling to sacrifice the sales benefits of excellent light quality in return.”

SORAA’S PERFECTLY TAILORED LIGHTING MAKES GIEVES & HAWKES’ FLAGSHIP STORE SHINE
Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, has announced that 245 of its LED lamps have been installed in Gieves & Hawkes’s elegant Savile Row flagship store in London. Founded in 1771, Gieves & Hawkes has always incorporated luxury with function. The well-respected tailor is known for outfitting the United Kingdom’s armed services and the British Royal Family as well as designing stylish yet classic suits for men. The retailer’s approach to lighting design was no different—while the lamps needed to be energy efficient and functional, they also needed to be luxurious and refined. Gieves & Hawkes wanted to reduce energy costs associated with lighting, improve efficiency and highlight their bespoke craftsmanship. Soraa’s simply perfect lighting solutions were the best products to meet Gieves & Hawkes’s needs.

Gieves & Hawkes is located at No. 1 Savile Row, a building the Royal Geographical Society—whose explorers were often dressed by the royal tailor—had occupied since 1870. While the building is as stately as the retailer, it did not hold up as well over time, so Gieves & Hawkes chose to completely renovate the building’s interior. As part of the renovation, the company decided to redesign the lighting scheme from scratch with new LED lamps.

“With its ultimate Savile Row address, refurbishing and modernising the historical 18th-century Gieves & Hawkes flagship store was challenging. I wanted to respect the original architecture of the building, whilst at the same time creating a contemporary space that acted as a foil to both the elegant creations of creative director Jason Basmajian as well as the history of the brand, which has spanned over a century,” said Teresa Hastings, the interior designer selected for the project. “I designed the store to flow through allocated spaces, which each required individual moods as the bespoke rooms run from formal to casual wear to the archive collection and then through to military and evening wear. With the help of lighting designers, Lightplan, we have created a unique space with a lighting system that is completely controllable, and Soraa lamps are a huge part of this achievement. The color rendering gives an accurate light whether it is set at a low level setting for evening events or a daylight setting for normal retail hours. The change in moods running throughout the store was a massive factor in the overall scheme, which is why Soraa lamps were ideally suited for this project.”

Because this was a relight and not a retrofit, Gieves & Hawkes and Teresa Hastings Design worked with Lightplan to create the best lighting environment possible. Lightplan’s designers assessed the space and lighting needs, ultimately choosing Soraa because of the products’ color qualities and versatility provided by beam adjustment. Specifically, Lightplan’s scheme involved variations of Soraa’s VIVID MR16 LED lamp.

The store’s lighting not only spotlights the beautiful merchandise, but it also showcases the impressive architectural aspects of the building. Gieves & Hawkes was keen to respect the history and context of the original building without sacrificing a brilliant, contemporary lighting design.

“Soraa’s lamps were the perfect fit for Gieves & Hawkes’s unique shop because of their function, versatility and quality. The color quality, in particular, is such that every shade of a garment is visible in its truest form, which is really remarkable from a merchandising perspective. The lamps also create a dramatic environment by highlighting the stone flooring and timber surfaces of the showroom with minimal glare,” said Baris Gursen, Senior Lighting Designer at Lightplan, “And if the store wants to host an event, the mood of the space can be significantly altered by using the lamps’ dimming feature.”

Soraa’s unique GaN on GaN technology allows its LEDs to operate at currents that are more than five times higher than LEDs built on other materials. This means a lot of light comes from a very small source resulting in a narrow beam of light from one source. This elegant LED design provides crisp object definition with a single shadow and bright, uniform colors and whites—perfect for making clothes look their best.

Sophisticated retailers have known about the benefits of high-quality lighting for some time, and are aware that quality lighting enhances both the perceived value of merchandise and the retail environments in which it is sold. Specifically, directional display lighting is an essential part of retailing, and a wide range of products benefit from accurate and complete color and white rendering. Soraa’s lamps do just that.

The company’s Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology allows for perfect rendering of colors and whiteness. Utilizing every color in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s VP₃ VIVID COLOR renders warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieves a color-rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. And unlike blue-based white LEDs without any violet/ultra-violet emission, the company’s VP₃ NATURAL WHITE is achieved by engineering the violet emission to properly excite fluorescing brightening agents including natural objects like human eyes and teeth, as well as manufactured white materials such as clothing, paper and cosmetics. In fact, studies have shown that light quality directly correlates with customer satisfaction and increased sales.

Chubic Lighting Consultant chose 74 PAR30 and 121 MR16 Soraa LED lamps to create an unusually elegant atmosphere for a boxing center and to spotlight the beautiful high-end gym equipment. Soraa’s lamps illuminate the large space and separate the three regions of the gym, including the boxing ring, weights, and the punching bag. Additionally, the lamps’ high-intensity beams bring an elevated level of control, illuminating each piece of the gym’s Italian exercise equipment. Given the short ceiling, the PAR30 and Soraa SNAP system is able to diffuse and refocus the LED light, making it much softer with less glare for people who use the gym.

“Boxing Plus Wellness Center is in class of its own in Taipei. The lighting creates a sophisticated ambiance – creating both a sense of drama and place and even exclusivity with spotlight in the equipment area and locker rooms,” said Jimmy Chu, Chubic Lighting Consultant.

The gym is so unique and perfectly illuminated that multiple commercial and editorial fashion photo shoots have been conducted in the space for renowned magazines, such GQ, Vogue and Elle.

Soraa’s unique GaN on GaN™ LED technology allows its LEDs to operate at currents that are more than five times higher than LEDs built on other materials. This means a lot of light comes from a very small source, resulting in a narrow beam that can be controlled to crisply illuminate any area with a single shadow.

"Jimmy Chu, the head designer of Chubic Lighting Consultant, has surpassed our expectation and aim of redefining the ambiance of a boxing center to an haute-couture-like boutique. Lights are orchestrated to simultaneously exude theatrical tension on boxing stage with spot lights, playfully rhythmic energy in workout space, and tranquility in shower area as a perfect ending. Lights are deflected by linear curtains to avoid the discomfort of shining directly into customers’ eyes when they stretch. While the lighting escalated the centers aesthetic level, it is also practical to the actual needs,” said Boxing Plus owner, Portia Chi.

Boxing Plus and its high-end equipment are illuminated for perfect rendering of colors and whiteness because of Soraa’s Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology. Utilizing every color in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a color-rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. Active in its commitment to reducing carbon emissions, the University of Oxford’s electrical team selected the Pitt Rivers Museum as a prime space for an energy efficient lighting upgrade.

Скрытый текст

The University installed 500 Soraa VIVID MR16 LED lamps that are estimated to save the museum £45,000 over the next 5 years and will reduce its carbon emissions by 44 tonnes each year. Now the more than 400,000 people who visit the museum annually can get a glimpse of the past illuminated by lighting that is doing its part to save the future. In addition, not only does the new LED lighting make the museum more energy efficient and the displays easier to see, they also emit no harmful ultra-violet light, protecting the artifacts from UV light damage. Soraa worked with their UK partners, 4D Lighting, to supply the lamps to the Pitt Rivers Museum.

While increased efficiency was a desired outcome, more importantly the artifacts and exhibits needed to be flawlessly illuminated and rendered. The lighting designers for the museum chose Soraa’s lamps with Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) technology to showcase the space’s industrial design and to illuminate the colours and whiteness of the relics on display. SORAA LEDS PERFECTLY ILLUMINATE THE NATURAL ARTISTRY IN THE “FAIRY GROTTOES”
Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, announced that its LED lamps have been installed to illuminate the natural beauty of the mineral formations found in the Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes in Thüringen, Germany. Through Soraa LEDs and an artist’s approach to lighting design, thousands of visitors can now see the subtleties in the incredible colours in stalagmites in the underground caverns.

Galleries • Museums LED Lighting Fixtures & Systems - led museum display lighting × led museum case lighting × museum lighting and led technology × art museum led lighting

Centuries ago miners searched for gold and silver in the Thüringian Slate Mountains in Saalfeld. After the discovery of alum shale, mineral indispensable for the processing of alum and vitriol, the area was excavated and large underground caves were created. Left untouched after they were closed, the mines slowly filled with colourful stalagmites and stalactites. In 1914, the present day fairy grottoes were opened to the public as an exhibition mine.

Скрытый текст

While the natural mineral formations were impressive, lighting the dark, subterranean spaces of the caves presented challenges. Previous lighting was inefficient, created an industrial feel and produced flat, monotone colours, failing to show the full, true beauty of the grottoes.

Lighting artist Rolf Zavelberg chose Soraa GU10 LED lamps to illuminate the space to reveal the unseen in the grottoes.

“Our approach is poetry in light, searching for hidden beauty that can be amplified by light and shadow. We want visitors to be in awe of nature’s beauty and creative forces in the Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes. There is an artistry in the caves that is only perfectly illuminated with Soraa LEDS,” said Zavelberg, founder of Cologne-based light artistry firm Aktivraum. “There are thousands of variations in single colours that can be seen now.”

The different colour temperatures and optics from Soraa’s LED lamps enabled Saalfeld Feengrotten to produce a very detailed and sophisticated lighting production that does not alter the character of the grottoes, but enhances the majestic formations.

"The lighting is beautiful. The real colours in the caves are much more striking and the subtler tones can be seen for the first time," said Yvonne Wagner, Director of the Feengrotten GmbH.

The caves at Saalfeld Feengrotten are illuminated with perfect rendering of colours and whiteness because of Soraa’s Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology. Utilising every colour in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a colour-rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. “We needed the right light to both illuminate the past and preserve the future. Soraa LEDs do that perfectly,” said Ken Schuster, Director & Chief Curator, The Brinton Museum. “The new Forrest E. Mars, Jr. building has changed the future of The Brinton Museum and these important pieces. While we always felt we were an important part of the arts community in Wyoming, we’ve taken a quantum leap forward and are now one of the most vibrant museums in the Rocky Mountain West.”

Скрытый текст

Jeffrey Leffeld Versakos, CEO of BandNY and LEDspin, wanted lighting to both protect the artifacts and define the space to reflect the beauty of the building.

Versakos chose Soraa VIVID MR16 LED lamps to deliver true color rendering and protective qualities. In addition, Versakos opted for the Soraa SNAP system to better control the beam distribution.

Rare tribal war shirts and ceremonial robes, hives, painted drums and other Plains Indian artifacts, many of which have natural pigments, are perfectly illuminated and protected by Soraa’s LED lamps. That’s because Soraa’s GaN on GaN™ LED with Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology renders the widest range of colors in the objects that we see, without ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiation that can fade or harm the artifacts.

“These are amazing, rare artifacts and we needed the ability to expertly and accurately light the collection displayed in this unique space. With no UV and IR radiation, as well as low heat output, Soraa LED lamps protect the objects. The SNAP System with magnetic accessories provides a flexible and easy way to perfectly customize the light for the artifacts and space,” said Versakos.

Utilizing every color in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a color rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. And unlike blue-based white LEDs without any violet emission, the company’s lamps have violet emissions to properly excite fluorescing brightening agents in natural objects.

Versakos’ teams at BandNY and LEDspin managed the exhibition design and lighting. The three-story building is anchored by a two-foot thick, 51-foot high, 209-foot long arced structural, rammed earth wall, the tallest in North America. The lighting design with Soraa LEDs and SNAP system emphasize the exhibits and architectural building elements. The Soraa LED lighting plays an important role in the climate-controlled galleries, reducing energy usage and better preserving the museum’s collections.

Located on the 620-acre historic Quarter Circle A Ranch in Big Horn, the eco-conscious museum houses one of the most significant and extensive 19th and 20th century Western and American Indian Art collections in the U.S., featuring Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, Thomas Moran, Edward Borein, Winold Reiss and the largest Hans Kleiber collection in the world.

Skyline Engineering of Rapid City, South Dakota managed the lighting system and specified Soraa LED lamps.

Soraa LED lamps have also been installed at the Staten Island Museum in New York, Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Historical Museum Bramberg in Germany.

“It was our goal to create a Museum that the local Staten Island community deserved. Our commitment to being a good community partner was an important element in how we approached our expansion and the building’s lighting,” said Cheryl Adolph, President & CEO, Staten Island Museum. “The difference the Soraa LED lamps brought to the galleries and our exhibits is substantial – both in quality of lighting and energy efficiency.”

Working with the Museum staff and exhibition designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates, lighting designer Kyle Chepulis and the design team of Technical Artistry installed approximately 400 Soraa PAR30 LED lamps as part of the goal to achieve LEED Gold status while perfectly illuminating the Museum’s world-class exhibits.

“Our goal was to find the right lighting solution to illuminate these colorful pieces amidst the abundant natural daylight and with the right color temperature. Soraa LED lamps help to create a mood that enhances the patron experience, allowing them to connect to the images,” said Chepulis.

Technical Artistry worked with Litelab Corporation to make a custom track fixture (now part of their standard line) with a classic cylinder shape that worked with Soraa LED lamp. Soraa was the perfect solution for the unique galleries and application. That’s because Soraa’s GaN on GaNTM LED with Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology renders the widest range of colors in the objects that we see, without ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiation that can fade or harm the artifacts.

The designers from Emphasis Lighting chose Soraa’s MR16 GU10 LED lamps to light the attraction of more than 100 wax figures of Hollywood A-Listers, politicians, musicians and other celebrities. Soraa LED lamps feature Point Source Optics for beautiful, high intensity and uniform beams and its Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology for perfect rendering of colors and whiteness. Using Soraa’s SNAP System, the designers added magnetic colored lens accessories to create drama in each vignette, emphasizing themes and fine detail.

"Madame Tussauds San Francisco is an interactive ‘must do’ attraction, providing guests with unique opportunities to create memories with some of the world's biggest icons. Countless hours are spent to make these figures impeccable. Perfect lighting in the attraction is essential to bringing out the fine detail of these figures and to the guest experience. Soraa’s lamps light these ‘stars’ perfectly,” said Mark Frank, Principal at Emphasis Lighting in Cambridge, Minn.

The lighting designer wanted great optics in addition to controlling energy costs and heat in the attraction. By using Soraa’s GU10 LED lamps, Emphasis Lighting was able to use a simple buildout with track heads that do not require transformers. Furthermore, Soraa’s unique GaN on GaN LED technology allows the lamps to operate at currents that are more than five times higher than LEDs built on other materials. This means a lot of light comes from a very small source, resulting in less heat generated in the attraction and on the wax figures.

Utilizing every color in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s LED lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a color-rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. Unlike blue-based white LEDs without any violet/ ultra-violet emission, Soraa’s VP₃ Natural White properly excites fluorescing agents including natural, or unnatural objects. The end result, incredibly life-like wax figures.

The museum staff partnered with lighting designer Nancy Goldstein from Light Positive to install approximately 100 MR16 lamps. Soraa’s GaN on GaN LED with Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology renders the widest range of colors in the objects that we see, without ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiation that can fade or harm the artifacts.

“As a lighting designer, the most important parts of a project like this are flexibility and the conservation of the artwork. It was critical to select a lamp that emits no UV light. The flexibility of the SNAP System allowed me to modify beams so that each piece in this exhibit is illuminated perfectly and looks its very best,” said Nancy Goldstein of Light Positive. “I applaud Heritage Museums & Gardens for having the long view to invest in Soraa lamps for continued benefit year over year.”

Soraa’s SNAP System allowed for distinct beam spreads to give the Museum the flexibility needed to properly illuminate the exhibits, and will allow them to change the lighting scheme for future exhibits without changing all the lamps. The SNAP System is the first magnetic attachment accessory system for LED lighting which combines the single source GaN on GaN™ LED technology with an innovative set of filters and lenses to completely redefine the accessory application.

Not only do the Soraa LED lamps provide excellent color rendering and protection for the exhibit items, the lamps also provided a significant efficiency benefit to Heritage Museums & Gardens. The LED lamps use less than 20 percent of the energy needed for a standard halogen lamp, and given the low heat form the lamps, the Museum continues to save additional resources that would have been spent on air conditioning.

“The restaurant and cuisine are authentic Indian. The interior design is unique – with elements that remind our guests of a beautiful, historic Indian town and mansions,” said interior designer Jill Hoffenberg. “The Spice Room can be seen from a distance, and the high contrast and colour rendering achieved by Soraa LED lighting creates an air of interest and draws people to the restaurant”

Скрытый текст

After a thorough comparison of lighting options, the Spice Room interior designer, Jill Hoffenberg, and lighting designers at PointOfView chose Soraa’s GU10 VIVID LEDs to create the warm and inviting atmosphere. The high colour-rendering index (CRI) and focused lighting draws attention to the interior surfaces, revealing the dynamic texture and colouring. Flexibility in the lit environment was another key element taken into consideration while lighting the space.

Warm individual pools of light furnish dining tables, providing functional light with beautiful colour rendering. Like all of Soraa’s LED products, the GU10 lamps feature the company’s Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology, allowing for perfect rendering of colours and whiteness. The carefully aimed narrow beams ensure spill light does not impose on the intimacy of the space.

“The tight beam spread and control of Soraa LED lamps allows for high levels of contrast needed to create the amazing ambiance desired by the designer and restaurant,” said Mark Elliott of PointOfView. “Focused lighting means no attention is drawn to the ceiling, which is concealed in shadow, and targets all attention to the interior surfaces.”

Utilising every colour in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s VP₃ VIVID COLOR™ renders warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieves a CRI of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. The company’s VP₃ NATURAL WHITE™ is achieved by engineering the violet emission to properly excite fluorescing brightening agents including natural objects like human eyes and teeth; as well as manufactured white materials such as clothing, paper and cosmetics.

SORAA'S LEDS BRING TWO MILLION YEARS OF HISTORY TO LIFE
Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, announced that its LED lamps have been installed at the Western Australian Museum in Perth, Western Australia. Soraa’s exceptional LED technology illuminated the exhibit – A History of the World in 100 Objects, a collection of the British Museum.

Galleries • Museums LED Lighting Fixtures & Systems - led lighting museum exhibits × museum led lighting fixtures × museum led lighting systems × led track lighting museum × led lighting for museum showcases × led museum lighting products × led lighting museum conservation

From the earliest tools made of humble stone to colourful Javanese shadow puppets, the objects in the exhibit provide an unwritten insight into human cultures across time, from two million years ago to the present. The challenge was to find the right lighting to accurately render colours and whiteness while meeting specific lighting guidelines to keep artefacts safe.

Скрытый текст

To meet these guidelines, Soraa’s Australian partners, Lighting Options Australia, and lighting designers at Illuminated Design chose 150 Soraa VIVID MR16 LED lamps throughout the exhibit after rigorous tests and evaluations of several brands. Utilising every colour in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a colour-rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. And unlike blue-based white LEDs without any violet emission, the company’s lamps have violet emissions to properly excite fluorescing brightening agents, including natural objects and white materials, such as textiles and paper. Plus, with no UV and IR radiation, low heat output and the ability to dim to specified light levels the precious objects were protected.

“This is one of the best known exhibits on loan to the museum. Soraa’s VIVID MR16 lamps and accompanying SNAP System™ provided the flexibility needed with this exhibition to protect these rare artifacts and illuminate them perfectly,” said Ben Conick, Lighting Options Australia. “Soraa delivered the rights options and simply the best lighting for this project.”

"Soraa’s VIVID MR16 lamps are excellent, with great colour rendering, colour temperature, beam angles and additional lenses to change the distribution. The magnetic attachment of filters, the SNAPS, are quite impressive,” said Frederika Perey of Illuminated Design. “The SNAPs are easy to apply, allowing me the flexibility to change the approach during the focusing process. This is critical when lighting exhibits, such as the History of the World in 100 Objects exhibition.”

Soraa’s SNAP System allowed for distinct beam spreads and CTO filters gave the Museum the options needed to properly illuminate the exhibit. The SNAP SYSTEM is the first magnetic attachment accessory system for LED lighting. Due to its bright, single LED light source made possible by Soraa’s GaN on GaN™ LED technology, and breakthrough prismatic optic, the company’s lamps can accept a magnet in the center of the lens without any major effect on light output. The system allows users to customise light directly on MR/PAR/AR111 lamps and light engines, rather than on fixtures, transforming the user experience and the economics of accessorising lighting designs.

SORAA PERFECTLY ILLUMINATES GLASS ART AT THE CROCKER ART MUSEUM
Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, announced that its full visible spectrum LED lamps were installed to illuminate the Sacramento-based Crocker Art Museum’s exhibition “Glass for the New Millennium: Masterworks from the Kaplan-Ostergaard Collection”.

Galleries • Museums LED Lighting Fixtures & Systems - led museum display lighting × led museum case lighting × museum lighting and led technology × art museum led lighting × museum lighting and led

“When illuminating glass, color rendering is the most important element. You must have true, accurate colors to bring out the best in glass,” said Matthew Isble, Exhibit Designer and Chief Preparator for the Crocker Art Museum. “We wanted something in the 3000K range that would mimic sunlight. Soraa LED lamps perfectly light the art glass pieces, making them sing.”

Скрытый текст

In putting together this important show, Isble and the team from the Crocker reviewed and tested LED lamps from four different companies. As they narrowed down their choices, the Crocker team opted to visit Soraa’s LED fabrication facility in Fremont, Calif. Ultimately they chose Soraa VIVID MR16™ and PAR 38 LED lamps for the exhibition.

“Glass for the New Millennium” challenges how the public perceives mass, volume and form of glass. Surveying the work of 70 dynamic global artists who push the medium’s boundaries, the exhibit included important pieces from the 20th century studio movement, such as the life-sized, figural forms of Karen LaMonte, cast-glass abstractions of Richard Whiteley, and the expectation-shattering sculptures of Masahiro Asaka and Christina Bothwell.

“We needed a light source to make the glass come to life, bringing out the shapes, forms and colors. Soraa’s LED lamps illuminate glass beautifully,” said Isble. “At the Soraa facility, the company’s production team explained how their LEDs are made. It was clear to us that the Soraa team members are serious about perfect lighting.”

Utilizing every color in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a color rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. Unlike blue-based white LEDs without any violet emission, the company’s lamps have violet emissions to properly excite fluorescing brightening agents in natural objects. Soraa’s GaN on GaNTM LED technology renders the widest range of colors in the objects that we see, without ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiation that can fade or harm the art and artifacts.

The Crocker Art Museum uses Litelab fixtures, and plans to replace all other lighting as it flickers or yellows throughout the facility with Soraa LED lamps. Soraa LED lamps have also been installed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Historical Museum of Bamberg in Germany.

SORAA MODERNIZES LIGHTING AT ICONIC NICOLAS SURSOCK MUSEUM IN LEBANON
Perfectly lighting a renowned modern and contemporary art museum, Soraa’s LED lamps now illuminate the Nicolas Sursock Museum in Beirut, Lebanon. Built in 1912 by aristocrat Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock, the villa was given to the city of Beirut as an art museum upon his death. The Sursock Museum first opened its doors to the public in 1961 with a mission to collect, preserve and exhibit local and international art.

“Museums are living facilities that must constantly adapt to meet evolving needs. Soraa LED lamps definitely contribute to the Museum’s mission—and are better suited to meet the Museum’s needs of today and tomorrow,” said Majdi Hajjar, Lighting Designer and Illuminating Engineer with Aartill, in Baabda, Lebanon.

Скрытый текст

When the project was originally specified in 2011, Aartill designers chose iGuzzini track-mounted fixtures but opted for halogen lamps, because LED luminaires available then were not acceptable in terms of reliability and light quality for the museum.

“At that time, we decided to specify fixtures for AR111 and MR16 halogen lamps as we were strongly confident that sooner or later high quality LED lamps would be available for retrofit. With Soraa’s lamps, we have been able to fulfill the lighting requirements for the Museum, allowing it to dramatically save on energy costs while protecting and perfectly illuminating the artifacts on display,” Hajjar continued.

By replacing hundreds of halogen lamps with Soraa LED lamps, the museum reduced its energy costs and dramatically extended the lamp lifespan while maintaining tight beam control and outstanding colour and whiteness rendering and consistency even when the lamps are dimmed.

Aartill worked with Beirut-based distributor Unilux Group. The teams opted for Soraa VIVID AR111 LED lamps to replace the halogen lamps in the iGuzzini Express spotlights. For the iGuzzini Express recessed directional downlights, Soraa VIVID MR16 LED lamps were used.

“We recommended Soraa LED lamps because of their excellent beam distribution and control. Soraa’s lamps have the narrowest available beam on the market deliving impeccable colour consistency and true to life colours,” said Joe Nacouzi, principal with Unilux Group.

Soraa’s true ANSI form factor MR16 LED lamps have outstanding peak intensity; flawless beam definition and edges; and exceptional colour (CRI of 95 and R9 of 95) and whiteness rendering. Additionally, Soraa's spot LED lamps are customisable with the company’s award-winning magnetic SNAP System™ accessories. With a simple magnetic accessory attachment, beam shapes can be altered and colour temperature can be modified, allowing endless design and display possibilities.

Gravity Club owners Fitness First, which is one of the largest fitness brands in the world and the largest in Southeast Asia, worked with Illuminate Lighting Design to create an atmosphere where lighting helps define the club’s sophisticated brand and style, and enhance the members’ experience.

Скрытый текст

Designers at Illuminate Lighting Design chose Soraa’s LEDs for their colour temperature, high output, multiple beam options, and dimmability.

“Soraa’s LED lamps perfectly illuminate the Gravity Club. Lighting is at the heart of creating an environment that combines upscale exercise facilities with beautifully designed social and business spaces in a single premium location. The successful integration of lighting as part of Gravity Club’s holistic experience was the result of a fresh approach to lighting schemes that are rarely offered in a gym,” said Claire Riley of Illuminate Lighting Design.

Specifically, the club chose Soraa’s LED lamps for all its downlighting needs, as well as for spotlights throughout the space. In the social spaces of the Gravity Club, such as the lounge, there is a warmer colour temperature to create a calming ambiance for members to wind down. The colour temperature then gradually increases towards the work-out area to aid high-performance activities. In the changing rooms, the company’s LED lamps are positioned precisely at alternating locker lines to emphasis the linear interior design. Soraa’s unique GaN on GaN™ LED technology allows its LEDs to operate at currents that are more than five times higher than other LED lamps, resulting in a narrow beam that can be controlled to illuminate any area with a single crisp shadow.

Colours and whites in distinct spaces throughout the Gravity Club are perfect rendered by Soraa’s Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology. Utilising every colour in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s LED lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a colour-rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. And unlike blue-based white LEDs without any violet emission, the company’s lamps have violet emissions to properly excite fluorescing brightening agents, including paper and natural objects like human eyes and teeth.

SORAA BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE AT DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS
Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, announced that its full visible spectrum LED lamps were installed at the Arts of the Ancient Middle East Gallery at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) in Detroit, Michigan. Soraa’s LED lamps now illuminate historic artifacts dated from approximately 3000 BCE and 600 CE that map the rise of writing, trade, religions, cities, and empires in the early civilizations of the Middle East.

Galleries • Museums LED Lighting Fixtures & Systems - led in museum lighting × museum quality led lighting × led museum track lighting × museum lighting led technology × led lighting for art galleries × led lighting in art galleries

Lighting designer Marc Langlois, working with the museum’s curatorial and collections staff, conducted a detailed series of tests, calculations and small case studies on a variety of lamps and fixtures. The team opted for Soraa’s VIVID MR16 LED lamps to illuminate the ancient art and artifacts. The new LED lighting gives the space a more inviting, airy and contemporary feel that the DIA desired. The gallery’s beautiful architectural elements had been previously lost with the halogen lighting, but the new Soraa lighting improved the color rendering of the art and made the space itself an attraction for guests.

Скрытый текст

“The color quality and consistency realized from the Soraa lamps proved to be the best fit for our installation,” said Terry Birkett, Director of Collections Management with the Detroit Institute of Arts. “Once the installation was completed, the response from the public and staff made it clear that Soraa’s lighting made the difference we had hoped for.”

Utilizing every color in the rainbow Soraa’s lamps render tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a color rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. Soraa’s GaN on GaNTM LED technology renders the widest range of colors in the objects that we see, without ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiation that can fade or harm the art and artifacts.

“The DIA was expanding its space and this gave us the opportunity to bring out the architectural elements and the artifacts through lighting design. The cooler color temperature really shows the beauty of the artifacts, many of which are stone and other organic materials,” said Langlois. “Soraa’s LED lamps give you the ability to appreciate the space more so than if it was still a warmer color temperature.”

Not only do the Soraa LED lamps provide excellent color rendering and protection for the artifacts in the gallery, but the lamps also provide a significant energy efficiency benefit to the DIA. It is estimated that the LED lamps will cut energy costs for the museum by more than 50 percent.

The last few years have seen a dramatic improvement in the efficiency and quality of LED light sources and the Museum decided that the technology had now advanced enough for them to replace their existing halogen powered light generators. In 2015, the Museum partnered with Absolute Action to find a solution to their lighting dilemma.

After vigorous testing and research, Absolute Action chose Soraa VIVID LED Optical Light Engines to incorporate within the new fibre optic projector which they used to illuminate the priceless art and artefacts at the Ashmolean Museum. Absolute Action selected Soraa’s light engines for their compatibility with the current fibre optic products system in the show-cases, energy efficiency and exceptional colour and whiteness rendering.

“Our quest to find high quality colour rendering and longevity led us right to Soraa,” said Emma Dawson-Tarr, Managing Director, Absolute Action. “With Soraa’s LED innovations, we have given the Ashmolean Museum more flexibility and control for the future.”

In addition to outstanding colour rendering and long life, a key reason Absolute Action decided upon Soraa was the large energy savings associated with the new LEDs. By utilising the new Soraa LED light engines versus the previous halogen lamps, the Museum is set to save nearly 75 percent in energy costs associated with lighting. Additionally – and almost as important – the ability to maintain the optimum temperature of the Soraa diode via the NTC reader control from the driver means the Museum can be assured of a long operational life.

“The Ashmolean Museum aims to display exhibits with the most accurate colour rendering and clarity possible. However, until recently, we found that this quality was only available with inefficient halogen lamps,” said Harry Phythian-Adams, Executive Officer at the Ashmolean Museum. “We required a more energy efficient solution to achieve our lighting goals in terms of both quality and energy efficiency.”

Soraa’s GaN on GaN™ LED with Violet-Emission 3-Phosphor (VP₃) LED technology renders the widest range of colours in the objects that we see, without ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiation that can fade or harm the artifacts. Utilising every colour in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a colour rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. And unlike blue-based white LEDs without any violet emission, the company’s lamps have violet emissions to properly excite fluorescing brightening agents in natural objects.

“As Shuji Nakamura, co-founder of Soraa, is the pioneer of the blue LED, it is fitting that there is now a collaboration between Soraa and Absolute Action, who were pioneers of fibre optic lighting. Both, in their way, distinctive specialists on a mission, renowned for the very best in quality and innovation, and well-respected on the international stage,” said Dawson-Tarr, Absolute Action. “It also chimes absolutely with our ethos of offering genuine reliability and longevity in all our products and services”.

Structuring information with ERCO light: "No Beer without the Alster Lake" in the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte
The venerable Hamburg Museum is celebrating brewing culture in northern Germany with a special exhibition. The organisers have succeeded in showing this cultural history topic in a concise, surprising and entertaining way – with a guidance system of striking graphics and pinpoint accent light from ERCO.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the German Purity Law, the "No Beer without the Alster Lake" exhibition focuses on the culture of brewing specifically in northern Germany. The exhibition, displayed across a compact 620 m2, ranges from the beginnings of brewing in ancient Egypt to mediaeval times and today and displays around 400 diverse exhibits. Objects from North Germany are shown, for example an original brewing kettle from the 18th century, botanic depictions of hops and grain, sophisticated still lives from the 17th century, historic drinking vessels, advertising panels and beer mats from the 20th century as well as currently popular craft beer brands.

A guidance system with graphics and light
To master this level of contextual and formal diversity in this small space was a major challenge for the exhibition concept. Exhibition designers Volker von Baczko and Oliver Thomas, founders of the IIID brand communication design studio in Hamburg, created an attractive guidance system consisting of only two design elements for concisely structuring the content and guiding visitors through the show. Striking yellow lines mark the way across the floor and up the walls to the exhibition texts on the one hand. On the other, these "beer paths" serve to structure eleven roughly chronological themes concerning the brewing process and beer culture, for example "barrel and barrel makers", "pubs and beer halls" and "Hanseatic breweries". The second essential design element is rich-contrast accent lighting achieved with just a single luminaire range, compact Light Board spotlights from ERCO. Orientation is established in the space entirely without general lighting – only various light accents are used precisely, serving to guide visitors and hierarchically classify the exhibits.

The Museu de Cultures del Món (Museum of World Cultures) in Barcelona presents outstanding works from around the world in medieval Catalan buildings. Architecture and art are set off perfectly thanks to the ERCO lighting tools Optec and Pollux
A death mask from Ghana, a Buddha statue from Burma, an incense holder from Guatemala. Selected non-European ritualistic and everyday objects are cherished as sought-after collector's items on the international art market. Compared to modern Western works though they are subject to other sets of rules. Because most objects are not signed they usually cannot be assigned to specific artists – their value is defined according to the collections that housed them. The Museu de Cultures del Món makes works from several renowned institutes such as the Folch Foundation and the Ethnological Museum Barcelona accessible to the interested public.

As often found in archaeological and ethnological museums, the Museu de Cultures del Món presents many of its exhibits in display cabinets. Here both general lighting of the room and accenting the objects with spotlights had to be ensured. Even though the cabinets are illuminated externally, no reflections from either the light or windows must occur on their panes. Due to reasons of conservation the temperatures in the cabinets must also remain constant.

ERCO LED lighting tools are the ideal solution thanks to their heat dissipation to the rear of the luminaire. The tops of high display cabinets can also be used for light guidance with the use of frosted panels. When the directed light of a spotlight penetrates the semi-transparent material, it creates diffuse ambient lighting with precision accents. This approach is used at the Museu de Cultures del Món, for example, to set off a collection of African masks with uniquely expressive illumination.

An advantage for success at the Hong Kong Science Museum
Since its opening, the Hong Kong Science Museum has captivated the public’s curiosity through interactive and enlightening exhibitions. Housing over 500 exhibits in an area that spans over 65,000 square meters, the Museum recently opened a series of new exhibits designed to encourage a greater understanding of the world all around us. Wanting to implement an energy-efficient LED lighting system to accentuate the exhibits, the Museum called upon longtime partner Pacific Lighting Ltd who provided them with complete system of Altman Lighting Pegasus, Spectra Cyc 50 and ME4 luminaires.

Museums LED Lighting Fixtures & Systems - led museum case lighting × led lighting museum × museum led lighting fixtures × museum led lighting systemsMuseums LED Lighting Fixtures & Systems - led track lighting museum × led museum lighting products × led lighting museums × led lighting museum conservationled lighting for museum × led in museum lighting × led museum track lighting × museum quality led lighting × Museums LED Lighting Fixtures & Systems

“We have a long and successful history of working with the Hong Kong Science Museum designing and installing a number of their exhibition lighting systems,” began Hugh Chinnick, Pacific Lighting Director and Project Lighting Designer. “With the latest exhibition, they wanted to use LED technology when possible so the choice of fixtures had to be carefully managed. Although there was no detailed design brief, we knew they wanted the lighting design to create the appropriate theatrical atmosphere, so we chose to implement a system of Altman Lighting LED luminaires.”

Spoiler

Available as a 6 or 8-inch white output LED Fresnel, the Altman Pegasus is both a Mains Dimmable and DMX controlled luminaire that replicates the soft light output that is expected from a Theatrical or Studio Fresnel. At under 150W, Pegasus meets the output of its 750 watt incandescent counterparts and is also available in four different color temperatures with a 10-70 degree spot-to-flood beam spread.

“When looking at our choices for the fixtures in the design, we had to keep in mind the physical size, light output, beam spread, fixture control, and of course cost,” continued Chinnick. “Since the Museum already has a flexible grid system with distributed dimming and DMX outlets, the challenge really became how to effectively amplify the theatrical environment once all the set pieces and exhibitions elements were in place.”

The Spectra Cyc 50 is a 50W RGBA or RGBW cyclorama wall wash designed for both theatrical and architectural applications. Blending colors via a patented LED lens that reduces direct-view pixilation, the on-board power supply allows for direct power and data inputs, and individual units can also be linked side-by-side for an even greater saturation of light. The Spectra Cyc is compatible with both DMX and RDM protocols, and comes complete with a library of pre-programmed single colors to match various color mixes.

“I really like the flexible beam control and seamless coverage with defined upper and lower beam cut-off of the Altman Spectra Cyc,” added Chinnick. “Plus, with the compact beam angle range of the Pegasus luminaire we had the ability to go from a spot to a very wide and flat beam field giving us tremendous flexibility in creating the ideal design. After some creative rigging and a little bending of artificial tree branches, we ended up with a wonderful new lighting design that included 15 Pegasus, five Spectra Cyc 50 and 20 ME4 luminaires from Altman Lighting.”

The ME4 ellipsoidal is a high efficiency LED framing projector with a 20-40 degree variable zoom focus. Utilizing a 30W LED source capable of achieving a 2700K, 3000K, 4000K or 5000K color temperature, the ME4 also features bright and crisp pattern or graphic projections. With four framing shutters for precise beam shaping the ME4 is perfect for museums, retail locations, restaurants and other venues requiring a small ellipsoidal framing projector.

“I really enjoy using the Altman Lighting luminaires in this type of application because they easily meet both the physical size and excellent performance criteria,” concluded Chinnick. “In the completed project, we now have Altman fixtures hanging all around the new exhibitions which include the Mangrove Forest, Forest Trail, Woodlands Diorama, Sunrise in the Savana Diorama, and the Sandy Beach Diorama. When the new exhibits opened, it was amazing to see the reaction of the visitors to the Hong Kong Museum and by choosing the LED lighting solutions from Altman Lighting we really achieved a distinct advantage for success.”
