5 Reasons You MUST Try Out a Ring Light This Weekend If you’ve never given a ring light a try, this weekend is the time to make. it. happen. Beyond offering beautiful, soft light that is perfect for capturing amazing straight on portraits, there are many reasons why you should add the ring light to your repertoire. 1. That Catch Light Tho The first is the most obvious: a ring light means one of the coolest, most attractive catch lights (the light reflection in your subject's eye) in the business! 2. It Makes a Awesome Prop The light doesn’t have to be off-camera. In fact, one of the coolest effects you can get in a portrait is to have your subject hold it themselves. The darker the surroundings the better: let that ring be the only source of light. 3. You Can DIY Your Own for Cheap His cost only $70, but he estimates that it’ll run you between 50 and 100 depending on how fancy you want to get. The results he’s gotten (like the photo below) speak for themselves. “I can’t afford it” isn’t a good excuse… sorry. 4. HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN RING LIGHT by Jay Russell This is a tutorial on the ring light I made that I use for most of my portrait work on 500px. I’ve made a few DIY lights since making my first ring light, but I still prefer the original 12 lights on a 24″x 24″ plywood to be the best light for my portraits. It’s not difficult to build, but just a warning—because you are working with electricity, I recommend getting an electrician to build it for you or at least provide you with some guidance. If you wire something wrong, you can easily end up electrocuting yourself, so please be safe and take all the necessary precautions. You can do this project for about $50-$100, depending on the specific materials you decide on using. My cost for this project is $70. It will take about 1-3 hours to complete. MATERIALS 14-gauge household wiring (approximately 10 ft) Standard light sockets x 12 24″x 24″ plywood. I used 1/4″ fir, 3/8 would be stronger A light switch. I decided on a 600-watt dimmer switch 12 light bulbs. CFL or incandescent work fine. Keep in mind incandescents run hot. Make sure you don’t go over the wattage that your switch can handle. I used regular 40-watt household bulbs. Power cord Small bag of wire connectors Zip ties Bracket and spigot for mounting to a light stand Electrical tape Electrical box TOOLS Jigsaw Drill Wire cutters and strippers Screwdriver Pliers Box cutter Measuring tape Pencil String INSTRUCTIONS Measure and mark the center of your plywood at 12 inches. Then attach the string to your pencil to draw the inner circle you need to cut out. Use one of the light sockets to gauge the distance you need to make it. Then, do the same for the outer circle. Use the jigsaw and cut out your inner and outer circles. For the outer circle, leave one corner in tact, so you have a spot for the switch and mounting bracket. Once you are done, you’ll have a teardrop shape with a hole in it. You can measure and mark 12 evenly spaced points for the light sockets. I just spaced my sockets out and marked everything without measuring. Drill the 12 holes out with a 7/16″ bit, or whatever is close enough so that you can feed 4 wires through. Next you’ll need to strip the wire. Remove the outer shield and cut off 8-10″ strips of the black and white pairs. You’ll need 12 pairs in total. Then you’ll need to strip the ends of every wire, roughly 3/4″ bare wire and use the pliers to make hooks on the bare wire. You’ll feed 4 wires through each of the 12 holes you drilled and wire each light socket. I wired mine in parallel. You’ll want to take your time, and make sure you don’t mix up the polarity. The 2 white wires go to the two gold contacts on the light socket. The 2 black wires go to the silver contacts. Make sure you feed the wire onto the contacts clockwise, so that when you tighten the screws, the wire doesn’t spin off. Double check your work, and do not mess this up. As you wire around the ring, you should have 1 white and 1 black wire left. Do not wire these into the socket you started with—you will wire these into the switch according to the instructions that come with your switch. For my dimmer switch: White wire goes directly to the power cord The black gets wired into the switch The ground from the switch goes to the ground on the green power cord Secure your wires with wire connectors and tape them. Now is a good time to test your handiwork. Screw a light bulb into the last light socket, and test it out. It should work like a regular light switch. If it doesn’t work, then you messed up and you’ll need to unplug your light and double check your wiring. After you know your wiring works and it’s NOT plugged into the outlet, zip tie everything in place. Drill small holes for the zip ties. You can also cut off the tip of the teardrop, so you have a flat edge for your mounting bracket. Important: Make sure you are NOT plugged into the wall when you’re working on your light! I zip tie everything, including the bracket and switch. Make sure there is no bare wire coming out the back of the light sockets or the switch. Steeped in maritime history since 1912, The Gantry’s name pays homage to the original structures on iconic Pier One. Um in der umliegenden Stadtentwicklung wettbewerbsfähig und attraktiv zu bleiben, benötigte 301 Howard Street eine umfassende Renovierung. Die neue Vision war klar: den unverkennbaren Gebäudeeingang in ein gemütliches und provokatives Leuchtfeuer verwandeln, das als neue öffentliche Anlaufstelle für Mieter und Besucher dient. Der erste wesentliche Schritt bestand darin, den Gebäudeeingang von der Ecke zur Mitte der Howard Street-Fassade neu zu positionieren. Der neue Standort bietet klarere Sichtlinien, verbesserten Zugang und vergrößert auch die vermietbare Verkaufsfläche im Erdgeschoss. Eine inspirierende Metapher wurde für das Design der Lobby durch das Konzept der Gezeitenbewegung – „Push and Pull“ – hergestellt. Diese Geste korreliert direkt mit der historischen Küstenlinie der Bucht von San Francisco und der städtischen Erneuerung der SoMa Nachbarschaft, die einst selbst ein Hafen war. Die Wasser-Metapher findet Resonanz in allen Aspekten des Lobby-Design, von Licht und Materialität bis zur Auswahl des Mobiliars. Schichten aus geschliffenem Putz bieten eine dramatische Kulisse an der Deckenebene, weiter betont durch Lichtlinien. Hier wurde die VarioLED™ Flex HYDRA LD15 W835 mit opaler Abdeckung eingesetzt. Diese wellenförmige Bewegung spiegelt sich im Terrazzo-Bodenbelag, wo Glasstücke eine glänzende Leuchtkraft erzielen. Die strukturierte Betonwand im Kern des Gebäudes dient als elegante Interpretation eines Deiches, während die mit Holz verkleideten Aufzugsvorräume Holzdocks imitieren. Die maßgeschneiderten Sitzplastiken des berühmten Künstlers Matthias Pliessnig wurden bewusst in Trommeltönen gefärbt und sind wie die leichten Seeschiffe konstruiert, die der Künstler auch produziert. In order to remain competitive and attractive in the surrounding urban development, 301 Howard Street required a comprehensive renovation. The new vision was clear: transform the indistinguishable building entry into a welcoming and provocative beacon that serves as a new public amenity for tenants and visitors. The first step was to substantially reposition the building entrance from the corner to the center of the Howard Street facade. The new location provides clearer sightlines, improved access, and also increases the rentable ground floor retail space. An inspirational metaphor was established for the lobby's design through the concept of tidal movement - "push and pull". This gesture directly correlates the historic shoreline of the San Francisco Bay with the urban renewal of the SoMa neighborhood, which was once a harbor itself. The aquatic metaphor finds resonance in all aspects of the lobby's design, from light and materiality to the furniture selection. Scalloped layers of sanded plaster provide a dramatic backdrop at the ceiling plane, further emphasized by lines of light. Here the VarioLED™ Flex HYDRA LD15 W835 with an opal lens was used. This undulating gesture is mirrored in the reveals of the terrazzo flooring, where pieces of glass achieve a sparkling luminosity. The patterned concrete wall at the building’s core serves as an elegant interpretation of a seawall, while the wood wrapped elevator lobbies mimic wooden docks. The custom-fabricated seating sculptures by renowned artist, Matthias Pliessnig, were deliberately stained in driftwood tones, and are constructed much like the lightweight seagoing vessels the artist also produces. The reception desk area was illuminated with VarioLED™ Flex PHOBOS TV in W827, creating a soft warm light. As light filters through the building façade throughout the day, interior lighting levels correspond, creating a different, dramatic impression each time one traverses the lobby. How to Build a Cool DIY Ring-Light for Just $25 On this video Matthew Perks from the popular Youtube DIY channel DIY Perks, demonstrates an interesting photography/videography related lighting DIY project for building an inexpensive ring light from LEDs. Perks didn’t use heat-sinks for the LEDs – this can be a problem as LEDs get very hot very quickly so it is very much recommended that you do connect heat-sinks to remove access heat. As always – these sorts of DIY projects can be dangerous (LEDs can easily melt and batteries might explode if they get too how) so do this at your own risk and only if you know what you are doing!
