Warm white or Cool white? Colour Temperature - With conventional lamps, choosing the “colour of light” emitted by a lamp was not a choice that was generally made. With some LED products, there is a choice of colours, choosing a colour will set the mood of your space. Correlated Colour temperature (CCT) in lighting describes how the colour of the light appears from a lamp, measured in kelvins (K). Imagine a scale from 1000K (very red) to 10,000K (very blue) (actual scale is wider). The higher up the scale you go, the closer the light resembles blue daylight. Confusingly, colour temperature does not describe the actual temperature of the lamp itself but the colour it produces and counter-intuitively; the higher the colour temperature the “cooler” a lamp will look. Put simply, colour temperature is based on how the colour of heated metal changes as its temperature is increased - turning from red to yellow then blue. You can then determine the temperature of a heated metal by its colour. This range of colours at different temperatures has become useful for describing the colour tint of white light. The colour of light from an LED lamp is approximated or “correlated” to this scale. Warm or cool? There are no rules - the choice is about personal preference and use. If you like the traditional yellowish colour of a conventional lamp then warm white around (2700-3000K ) would be the ideal choice, this is the most popular choice for homes. If you want a modern, clean look, you may prefer the cleaner, brighter feel of a cool white lamp (4000K+). Cool white light contains more blue light and looks brighter to the eye (this is why cool white bulbs have a higher lumen output when compared to the equivalent warm white bulb). It also seems people from sunnier countries tend to prefer white light compared to people from cooler countries who prefer more warm light. In commercial applications choosing the right colour temperature is important and will depend on the mood you want to create and the products you are promoting - for example freshly baked cookies and bread may look better under a warm white light. A cool white light may not make the product look as appealing but it would be a good idea to do some trials to see what works best. Where can I use them? I intend to install a number of LED downlights in a rather long hallway (600cm x 180cm) and see downlights that look like a small white panel, and others where the actual LEDs are visible. I am planning to replace my existing lights in my living room with a pair of LED strip lights. I was wondering can a LED light be brighter than a CFL light. My children usually sit in the living room, to do their daily home works, hence I am very concerned about the lighting quality in my living room in particular. I was advised by my friend to buy a LED Strip Light - 5000K Cool White - 72W - 12V DC and have two strips running my living room. As per his suggestion, one strip should be placed at the top of the living room, surrounding the living room on all four sides and the other one at the bottom of the living room, just above the carpets, illuminating all four walls. He told me this would serve the purpose and offer a cool look to the room. I am looking to buy LED strip lights locally to ensure I do not end up buying cheap Chinese scrap. I want my product to be an investment, that will last for a couple of years at least. But before buying a LED strip light from my local light store, I thought, it will be useful, if I take a second opinion. Abu Dhabi Municipality If you live in Mushrif or the Capital Centre, then you could be among the first to have your old streetlamps replaced with LEDs. Abu Dhabi Municipality last month announced ambitious plans to replace 42,632 older, inefficient lighting fixtures across the island. It is one of the largest projects of its kind in the world. The older lights are mainly high pressure sodium or metal halide. They give off a familiar orange glow, but are also notoriously inefficient. The new LEDs, or luminaires, will be up to 90 per cent more efficient; cost 90 per cent less to maintain; and also will lead to an 80 per cent reduction in harmful CO2 emissions. The quality of light and the fact it is more even will make it better for drivers and pedestrians. “Electricity bills were so high with all the old lights,” said Eiman Alameri, from the municipal infrastructure and assets sector at Abu Dhabi Municipality. “They really consume a lot of energy – and Abu Dhabi wants everything to be more sustainable,” she said. The retrofit is set to start early next year once the tendering process is completed. Work will be undertaken in five phases across the island and each phase is expected to take three months. The island is set to be finished by the middle of 2019. Poles or foundations will not have to be touched and only the lighting fixture will have to be replaced. Newer projects on the island such as on Salam Street and on Yas Island for example already use LEDs and the new fixtures are expected to last for about 12 and a half years compared with two to three years for the older lights. “The project is one of the biggest of its type in the world,” said Martin Valentine, lighting expert at the municipality. Mr Valentine said the Abu Dhabi plan is way ahead of other global retrofits when it comes to the quality of light. “It’s not just about changing to save energy. We’re [also] improving the lighting on the roads. We’re reducing the pollution,” he said. Traditional street lights, known for their yellowish hue, will be relaunched with bright white LED lights across Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Municipality “A lot of other plans around the world are done purely on energy saving. They forget about the colour being too blue or light spilling into people’s houses. We are way ahead.” The initiative is also a public-private partnership. This is a relatively new phenomenon for the UAE but it is expected to become more widespread. The retrofit includes the addition of a smart control system and it will yield consumption reports; identify failures; and allow lights to be dimmed at certain hours which will lead to even more savings. “These can be dimmed at times when traffic is quiet, after rush hour and between 1am and 5am,” said Mr Valentine. It is thought that there are 290,000 of the older lights still in use across the emirate. When the island retrofit is completed, it is believed that other areas of the emirate will be next. Local authorities around the word have been looking at introducing LEDs to cut costs. In some cities, such as Rome, residents have complained that harsh white light emanating from these new LEDs has distorted the ambience of the city. But for Mr Valentine, crude implementation is to blame. A historic city centre and a main road are completely different things. We encourage warmer colours for the streets,” said Mr Valentine. “We are not going too cold on the colour temperatures as some cities have and they’ve done that to save money. HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN RING LIGHT by Jay Russell This is a tutorial on the ring light I made that I use for most of my portrait work on 500px. I’ve made a few DIY lights since making my first ring light, but I still prefer the original 12 lights on a 24″x 24″ plywood to be the best light for my portraits. It’s not difficult to build, but just a warning—because you are working with electricity, I recommend getting an electrician to build it for you or at least provide you with some guidance. If you wire something wrong, you can easily end up electrocuting yourself, so please be safe and take all the necessary precautions. You can do this project for about $50-$100, depending on the specific materials you decide on using. My cost for this project is $70. It will take about 1-3 hours to complete. MATERIALS 14-gauge household wiring (approximately 10 ft) Standard light sockets x 12 24″x 24″ plywood. I used 1/4″ fir, 3/8 would be stronger A light switch. I decided on a 600-watt dimmer switch 12 light bulbs. CFL or incandescent work fine. Keep in mind incandescents run hot. Make sure you don’t go over the wattage that your switch can handle. I used regular 40-watt household bulbs. Power cord Small bag of wire connectors Zip ties Bracket and spigot for mounting to a light stand Electrical tape Electrical box TOOLS Jigsaw Drill Wire cutters and strippers Screwdriver Pliers Box cutter Measuring tape Pencil String INSTRUCTIONS Measure and mark the center of your plywood at 12 inches. Then attach the string to your pencil to draw the inner circle you need to cut out. Use one of the light sockets to gauge the distance you need to make it. Then, do the same for the outer circle. Use the jigsaw and cut out your inner and outer circles. For the outer circle, leave one corner in tact, so you have a spot for the switch and mounting bracket. Once you are done, you’ll have a teardrop shape with a hole in it. You can measure and mark 12 evenly spaced points for the light sockets. I just spaced my sockets out and marked everything without measuring. Drill the 12 holes out with a 7/16″ bit, or whatever is close enough so that you can feed 4 wires through. Next you’ll need to strip the wire. Remove the outer shield and cut off 8-10″ strips of the black and white pairs. You’ll need 12 pairs in total. Then you’ll need to strip the ends of every wire, roughly 3/4″ bare wire and use the pliers to make hooks on the bare wire. You’ll feed 4 wires through each of the 12 holes you drilled and wire each light socket. I wired mine in parallel. You’ll want to take your time, and make sure you don’t mix up the polarity. The 2 white wires go to the two gold contacts on the light socket. The 2 black wires go to the silver contacts. Make sure you feed the wire onto the contacts clockwise, so that when you tighten the screws, the wire doesn’t spin off. Double check your work, and do not mess this up. As you wire around the ring, you should have 1 white and 1 black wire left. Do not wire these into the socket you started with—you will wire these into the switch according to the instructions that come with your switch. For my dimmer switch: White wire goes directly to the power cord The black gets wired into the switch The ground from the switch goes to the ground on the green power cord Secure your wires with wire connectors and tape them. Now is a good time to test your handiwork. Screw a light bulb into the last light socket, and test it out. It should work like a regular light switch. If it doesn’t work, then you messed up and you’ll need to unplug your light and double check your wiring. After you know your wiring works and it’s NOT plugged into the outlet, zip tie everything in place. Drill small holes for the zip ties. You can also cut off the tip of the teardrop, so you have a flat edge for your mounting bracket. Important: Make sure you are NOT plugged into the wall when you’re working on your light! I zip tie everything, including the bracket and switch. Make sure there is no bare wire coming out the back of the light sockets or the switch. New Report on Tunable Lighting in Classrooms The U.S. Department of Energy's GATEWAY program has released a new report on a trial installation of tunable-white LED lighting systems in three classrooms in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District in Carrollton, TX, which provides valuable insights into the use of this technology in a real-world setting. The LED systems were installed in August 2016 and provide the ability to vary the spectral power distribution (SPD) across four preset conditions associated with nominal CCTs of 3000 K, 3500 K, 4200 K, and 5000 K. The controls also provide for preset scenes to vary the on/off status and dimming level of different luminaire zones within the room, to better support such classroom functions as audiovisual presentations. Among the key takeaways: The reduction in input power for the tunable-white LED lighting system was estimated to be 58% relative to the incumbent fluorescent system, and was attributable to the higher efficacy of the LED luminaires and a reduction in illuminances, which previously exceeded IES-recommended levels. Dimming furthered the energy savings in each classroom. While the teachers’ usage of the controls varied widely as recorded by the monitoring system, in each case the lighting consistently operated with all or some of the luminaires turned off or dimmed for portions of the school day. When the control locations were more easily accessed by the teacher, the dimming level was varied more regularly. The teachers used the scene controls regularly but used the SPD controls infrequently. Color consistency for the tunable-white LED luminaires was very good, even over the dimming range, with only minor variations in CCT and Duv. The two teachers interviewed by DOE appreciated the ability to tailor the lighting to different classroom needs, and felt that the lighting and controls allowed the students to be engaged in choosing the settings for various classroom activities. intu Victoria Centre, Nottingham » Retail Lighting Design The £40 million re-model and refresh of intu Victoria Centre, Nottingham has transformed the Centre’s tired appearance, creating a vibrant and bold retail interior. Optelma worked with lighting designers Hoare Lea Lighting to design and develop large, bespoke feature pendants that would work with the scale of the central mall. Suspended in the skylight bays, these elegant two-metre-high moulded ‘Conico’ pendants are key elements, which visually separate the retail spaces from the food and beverage courts, while softening the overall impression. The custom-built pendants feature RGBW LEDs which enable a dynamic, yet subtle, uniform colour-change to take place throughout the day. This mirrors the colour-change within the walkways, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated visual appearance. Each Conico pendant has a 3000lm Xicato downlight built into the base, providing general illumination beneath as well as a platform for the emergency lighting. Martin Breeden Development Director of intu commented: ‘The refurbishment of intu Victoria Centre has enhanced the centre’s look and feel throughout, and the lighting design has really complemented this, helping us to achieve a modern and welcoming environment.' Hoare Lea Lighting was appointed by intu to design a new lighting scheme for intu Victoria Centre. To give the interior a fresh dynamism, many of the finishes were taken back to the primary structure before new layers were applied. The remodelling has allowed the daylight function to be enhanced and for the integration of energy-efficient artificial lighting. This has enabled the creation of a softly lit environment, in which strong visual architecture is supported by lighting. Linear forms characterise the architectural enhancements and this language is echoed in the lighting design. Indirect linear lighting to the soffit provides ambient light (from ACDC’s Orelle) in a fresh 4000K white light. This contrasts with the warmer, more relaxing treatment of 3000K within the food and beverage courts. Here, linear ‘tramlines’ of light, from KKDC’s Lini Glow XL, run across the ceiling, their architectural forms spilling into the main malls, adding an exuberant feel and giving a playful visual lead from one space to the next. Hidden sources and integrated lighting combine with white light and RGB colour-change for a clean, dynamic feel. On the walkways, soft washes from hidden lines-of-light are punctuated by pools of light created by spotlights and downlights from Lumenpulse/ AlphaLED and iGuzzini. Peripheral coves running parallel with the walkways are washed with a hidden RGBW linear product (Traxon’s 1PXL Cove Light), which allows for a subtle, slow, uniform colour-change throughout the day. This colour change is mirrored by RGBW feature pendants in the central mall, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated visual appearance. Suspended in the skylight bays, the ‘Conico’ pendants, custom-built by Optelma, are key visual features which work to visually separate the main retail mall spaces from the food and beverage courts, while softening the overall impression of the malls. Commenting on the design, Chris Fox, Senior Lighting Designer, Hoare Lea said: ‘The approach we took was that of ‘lighting through layers’ – combining direct and indirect sources to build a visual scene with various options. Control allows dimming of groups of luminaires to create scenes and for the switching between pre-programed scenes throughout the day. ‘ The exterior of the Centre has been transformed, with the dated 1970s brutalist concrete facade now clad in a clean, contemporary finish. As night falls, the back-lit cladding comes alive with light and colour. White light follows the building’s form, washing each panel in a neutral 4000K, supplied by Osram’s LINEARLight Power Flex. The cladding surrounding the main entrance has a linear wash. DMX feeds give control over each panel and, using a bespoke RGB lensed product from NJO Technology, turn the entrance into an eye-catching media façade. The Clock Tower, an icon on the Nottingham cityscape, has been given a traditional uplight treatment, which complements the architecture, while contrasting with the new backlit entrance cladding and glazed entrance. Ground-recessed uplights, from Bega, illuminate the red brickwork in 3000K, while spotlights (ACDC’s Plaza) pick out the higher levels and the clock face. По ряду причин было желание использовать полностью светодиодное освещение для этого проекта, но готовые коммерческие продукты были дорогостоящими. На момент написания этой инструкции, светодиодные светильники, длиной 1,2 метра, в магазине стоили от $40. После проведения некоторого исследования оказалось, что можно использовать недорогие светодиодные ленты из Китая. Они продаются в катушках по 5 м и могут быть приобретены на Ebay или Aliexpress за $5-7 за катушку. Но как их использовать? После долгих размышлений, возникла идея установить их прямо на деревянные балки. Это должно было дать яркое решение освещения и чистый современный вид. Установка светодиодных лент В данном случае, светодиодные ленты были приобретены в разных местах, и так получилось, что одни имели разъем питания с одной стороны, а другие с двух сторон. Любой из этих видов будет работать одинаково хорошо. Для начала разверните свои светодиодные ленты таким образом, чтобы разъемы питания находились с одной стороны. Это упростит вашу жизнь, когда дело дойдет до подключения питания. Снимите часть защитной пленки с двухстороннего скотча и светодиодной ленты и начните приклеивать светодиоды. Опытным путем было обнаружено, что лучше всего сначала приклеивать центральную полоску, а затем, впритык к ней, две остальные. Можете приклеивать все три полоски поэтапно или же сначала полностью приклеить одну, потом другую и т.д. Но чтобы не прыгать по лестнице, проще приклеивать поэтапно. Во время приклеивания полос, вам надо хорошо их прижимать к балке, чтобы они хорошо и полностью приклеились. Не используйте для этого ролик, он может повредить светодиоды. Это отлично можно делать руками. После проклейки одной балки, все эти действия были повторены для всех оставшихся балок в гараже. Очень маловероятно, что длина купленных светодиодных лент идеально подойдет к длине вашей балки. Что же делать? Одной из многих интересных особенностей этих светодиодных лент является то, что их можно легко разрезать, не повреждая их. У каждой полосы есть места с маленькими медными контактами через каждые 10-15 сантиметров, где их можно безопасно разрезать или соединить полосы между собой. Разделите 14 на 2.5, и вы получите 5,6 полосы. Или, другими словами, вы легко сможете подключить 5 полосок от одного источника питания. Имея в виду, что блоки питания бывают разные, то эти расчеты надо делать индивидуально для каждого случая, беря во внимание конкретную светодиодную ленту и конкретный блок питания. Это можно сделать двумя способами и пришло время сделать выбор. Жесткая пайка: Можно припаять провода непосредственно к блоку питания. Это приемлемое решение, но что делать, если понадобится заменить блок питания? Придется его вырезать и припаивать новый. В этом решении нет ничего плохого, но лучше выбрать следующий вариант. Использование разъемов: Можно припаять ответные разъемы к проводам от светодиодов и просто подключить их к блоку питания. Таким образом, если блок питания умирает, то его можно быстро и просто заменить. На этом этапе, надо еще поговорить о самом блоке питания. В стандартном виде он не готов для использования в этом проекте. Надо сделать быструю модификацию для включения питания при подключении. После того, как блок питания был изменен, и вы подключили его к светодиодным лентам, включите шнур питания в розетку. Шаг 6: Заключительные мысли Подводя итоги, можно сказать, что игра стоила свеч! Освещение получилось яркое, ровное и просто фантастическое. Затраты составили примерно десятую часть от установки коммерческих решений освещения. Светодиодные ленты доступны со всеми цветами свечения, но для освещения используются три оттенка белого. Холодный белый (6000К), Нейтральный белый [Дневной] (4000-5000K) и Теплый белый (2400-3000K). Холодный белый оттенок больше похож на флуоресцентное освещение, в то время как теплый белый цвет ближе к лампам накаливания. В данном проекте использовался холодный белый цвет, хоть это и выглядит потрясающе, но все же смотрится немного синеватым. Если бы пришлось повторить проект, то в новой установке лучше было бы использовать две полосы с холодным белым оттенком и одну с теплым белым цветом, это может сгладить жесткость света или полностью использовать ленты с Нейтральным белым цветом свечения.
