I am planning to replace my existing lights in my living room with a pair of LED strip lights. I was wondering can a LED light be brighter than a CFL light. My children usually sit in the living room, to do their daily home works, hence I am very concerned about the lighting quality in my living room in particular. I was advised by my friend to buy a LED Strip Light - 5000K Cool White - 72W - 12V DC and have two strips running my living room. As per his suggestion, one strip should be placed at the top of the living room, surrounding the living room on all four sides and the other one at the bottom of the living room, just above the carpets, illuminating all four walls. He told me this would serve the purpose and offer a cool look to the room. I am looking to buy LED strip lights locally to ensure I do not end up buying cheap Chinese scrap. I want my product to be an investment, that will last for a couple of years at least. But before buying a LED strip light from my local light store, I thought, it will be useful, if I take a second opinion. I have not seen LED strip light illuminated living room and do not know, how good will it look. As I mentioned earlier, my goal is to have maximum light in the room, something very close to real light( soft yet clear). I am concerned can it provide the adequate light balance I am looking for.

New Year’s Eve 2017: SGM Q-7 strobes were the main cannons of the stage lighting for Justin Bieber’s exclusive show at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami, FL. Everlast Productions have carried out the New Year’s Eve Party at Fontainebleau Hotel for several years. It was the first year that Tyler Frank spearheaded the overall design. Tyler and his crew took the shell of the structure from previous years and incorporated that into the new design for the stage. He wanted to create something that had more depth, immersion and dynamics, all the while fitting into the tight restrictions of the space. They built a 18m wide x 15m tall x 13m deep (60’ wide x 50’ tall x 40’ deep) structure and stage over an existing poolside bar. The lighting design had to be practical, bright and resilient to South Beach weather conditions. He explained why he chose the Q-7s for the stage setup: “The Q-7s were the main cannons for the show. They were the only fixtures that I could trust to fill in the void between the LED walls and to have a output bright enough to make it across the pool. The Q-7s were going to be out in the open to the elements and so the IP-rating and the durability of SGM was a no brainer. The fixtures acted as bookends to the LED wall and really brought synergy between the lighting and video elements.” Tyler was very satisfied with the performance of Q-7s from SGM: “The Q-7s set the bar for a LED strobe fixture. It’s a tank and can handle anything you throw at it. I didn’t have a single issue with these fixtures, whereas I had several with others due to the rain. The Q-7s are now in my bag of tricks - and I will definitely use them again.” The Everlast Production crew had no idea who the headliner was going to be until a few weeks beforehand, so they focused on creating a large canvas that could support any act. Once they found out that it was Justin Beiber, they got in touch with his team to make any changes. Fortunately, they loved the rig and rocked with what Everlast Productions had provided them. What Is OLED Lighting: And How Is It Different from LEDs? LED lighting has been a key factor in the energy-use revolution over the last decade. It’s amazing to think that something as innocuous as a light bulb has been at the forefront of educating consumers on how technology can cut our carbon footprint and improve our homes and businesses. In just a few years, LED lighting went from niche uses to mainstream. Helped in part by a significant drop in price, total installations of LED bulbs in American homes more than doubled from 77 million to 202 million in just one year. That figure is even more impressive when compared to the fewer than 400,000 installations in 2009. But will this dramatic shift from one technology to another repeat itself? Will our 25-year life span LED lightbulbs be obsolete in 10 years when another hot new green technology comes along? We won’t have to wait another decade to find out. That new technology is already here: organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs. Estimated to be a $1.3 billion market by 2023, OLED lighting works by using thin layers of organic compounds to emit light through electric currents. In contrast, LEDs predominantly use the chemical yellow phosphor. Score one for OLEDs on the green scale. OLEDs also have no UV rays, whereas LEDs have some. OLEDs differ significantly from LEDs in form. They are made in sheets that are incredibly thin and pliable, so they can be adapted to work in places LEDs can never go. They also emit light evenly, as opposed to the bright, concentrated light of LEDs—think the difference between a paintbrush and a pen. Does this mean OLEDs are going to replace LEDs as a greener, cleaner light source? In short, no. But they will augment and enhance the quest for ultimate lighting efficiency. Due to technical limitations, OLEDs are not, and likely won’t ever be, available in the traditional bulb style. They come as flat panels, which can be replaced as you would a light bulb. Abu Dhabi Municipality If you live in Mushrif or the Capital Centre, then you could be among the first to have your old streetlamps replaced with LEDs. Abu Dhabi Municipality last month announced ambitious plans to replace 42,632 older, inefficient lighting fixtures across the island. It is one of the largest projects of its kind in the world. The older lights are mainly high pressure sodium or metal halide. They give off a familiar orange glow, but are also notoriously inefficient. The new LEDs, or luminaires, will be up to 90 per cent more efficient; cost 90 per cent less to maintain; and also will lead to an 80 per cent reduction in harmful CO2 emissions. The quality of light and the fact it is more even will make it better for drivers and pedestrians. “Electricity bills were so high with all the old lights,” said Eiman Alameri, from the municipal infrastructure and assets sector at Abu Dhabi Municipality. “They really consume a lot of energy – and Abu Dhabi wants everything to be more sustainable,” she said. The retrofit is set to start early next year once the tendering process is completed. Work will be undertaken in five phases across the island and each phase is expected to take three months. The island is set to be finished by the middle of 2019. Poles or foundations will not have to be touched and only the lighting fixture will have to be replaced. Newer projects on the island such as on Salam Street and on Yas Island for example already use LEDs and the new fixtures are expected to last for about 12 and a half years compared with two to three years for the older lights. “The project is one of the biggest of its type in the world,” said Martin Valentine, lighting expert at the municipality. Mr Valentine said the Abu Dhabi plan is way ahead of other global retrofits when it comes to the quality of light. “It’s not just about changing to save energy. We’re [also] improving the lighting on the roads. We’re reducing the pollution,” he said. Traditional street lights, known for their yellowish hue, will be relaunched with bright white LED lights across Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Municipality “A lot of other plans around the world are done purely on energy saving. They forget about the colour being too blue or light spilling into people’s houses. We are way ahead.” The initiative is also a public-private partnership. This is a relatively new phenomenon for the UAE but it is expected to become more widespread. Design, installation and maintenance will be taken care of by a private firm for a contract of about ten years. Then it's handed back to the municipality. “We want the private sector to be involved with the urban development of Abu Dhabi. We don’t want to have all the budgets coming from the government,” said Ms Alameri. While it is a public-private partnership, the municipality will retain control of the system. The retrofit includes the addition of a smart control system and it will yield consumption reports; identify failures; and allow lights to be dimmed at certain hours which will lead to even more savings. “These can be dimmed at times when traffic is quiet, after rush hour and between 1am and 5am,” said Mr Valentine. It is thought that there are 290,000 of the older lights still in use across the emirate. When the island retrofit is completed, it is believed that other areas of the emirate will be next. Local authorities around the word have been looking at introducing LEDs to cut costs. In some cities, such as Rome, residents have complained that harsh white light emanating from these new LEDs has distorted the ambience of the city. But for Mr Valentine, crude implementation is to blame. There are nine colour temperature options when it comes to LEDs, and these range from warmer yellow light to a harsh blue light. “You have to look at colour temperature. A historic city centre and a main road are completely different things. We encourage warmer colours for the streets,” said Mr Valentine. “We are not going too cold on the colour temperatures as some cities have and they’ve done that to save money. We banned the cold blue white colours from Abu Dhabi. We’ve got a neutral white colour which is the most efficient warm colour. The vertical guitar strings on the building extend into the night sky with rooftop light cannons that can be seen for miles - making the hotel an experiential centerpiece and an illuminated architectural beacon for South Florida. This robust show control system was developed by Float4 using Realmotion servers and creative programming to enable sound responsive animations that display across this 10,000 pixel wide canvas, in real-time Hard Rock fashion. First Night First Day Boston is a recurring event that counts down to the New Year. To wrap up 2016 and make way for 2017, SGM’s G-Spots and G-1 Beams were chosen to illuminate the spectacle. They lit up the night while adding to the excitement of downtown Boston. The event took place in Copley Square featuring live performances, ice sculptures and fireworks. We spoke with Kyle Stetson of Port Lighting Systems who was the lighting designer for this event. He explained what role, the G-Spot has played for the company: “Port Lighting Systems was one of the first production companies in the Northeast to purchase an inventory of the G-Spot fixtures. It is a workhorse fixture for many of the outdoor events we are involved in.” It was important to him to find a fixture that would give him the look he wanted, but could also stand up to the wintery conditions found in New England. We asked him what was important to him to make this event a success: “When designing the show, we needed fixtures that could not only stand up to the New England winter weather (they saw rain, wind and snow for this event), but also compete in lumen output to other larger fixtures that were protected in scaffolding towers around the square.” The G-Spots were the sole light source for lighting the Trinity Church, backdrop and main performance center. He explained that space was a concern when setting up for this event. In order for the audience to have the best view possible, Kyle needed to find a way to integrate lighting without obstructing viewing areas: “The client wanted Trinity Church lit in pattern and color, with the ability to change throughout the night. An additional scaffolding structure was not possible as our only available fixture locations (next to Front of House) would block the view of the main stage from the rest of the Square. The G-Spots were a great choice for this location because we were able to keep them out in the elements on two small risers, allowing the building to be lit and the audience to see the main stage.” The G-1 Beams lined the rooftop of a hotel in the vicinity overlooking the green. Also exposed to the elements, Kyle needed fixtures that he could rely on. With SGM’s IP65- and IP66-ratings, these hassle-free fixtures require no weatherproof domes and almost no maintenance. Kyle elaborated: “The client also wanted beam effects in the air on the roof of the Fairmont Copley Plaza, a prominent feature of Copley Square. Waterproof domes were used for a number of beam fixtures in this location, but the budget did not allow domes for all fixtures, and a scaffolding structure was not an option due to the location and load in logistics. The G-1 Beams, supplied by Main Light Industries, were a perfect solution for this problem. They allowed us to line the edge of the roof with beam fixtures and kept the budget intact by eliminating the need for waterproof domes.” Kyle summarized on his experience working with the G-Spots for this installation: “We chose the SGM fixtures for both of these locations for their LED source, amazingly bright output and outdoor rating. "Arrangements": The New Contemporary Lighting Design Series for Flos Michael Anastassiades presented Flos newest contemporary lighting design series: Arrangements. The designer explained that the series is, at its essence, “a modular system of geometric light elements that could be combined in different ways, creating multiple compositions as individual chandeliers“. “Each unit simply attaches onto the previous one as if resting, balancing perfectly as part of a glowing chain“, explained the designer. These almost architectural pieces can be carefully twisted and warped, creating an unusual intersection of fields: lighting and jewelry design. “I have always been fascinated with the parallel that exists between lighting and jewelry. starting from the simple fact of how each piece relates to the human scale: one is designed to be worn on the body whereas the other is made to decorate the space someone occupies”, said Anastassiades.
