  1. 10 Herbert Samuel, Tel Aviv Architect: Ranni Ziss Architects Lighting design: Rama Mendelsohn Product: VarioLED™ OCEANOS, VarioLED™ Flex VENUS Top View IP67 Customer: Ofer Brothers Group Location: Tel Aviv, Israel Photos: Omri Amsalem Interior architect: Orly Shrem Landscape design: Ilana Ofir Towering 80 meters above the Jaffa seashore, 10 Herbert Samuel is a new developed building with luxury apartments in Tel Aviv set right in the heart of the city. The building which spans 21 floors will offer a new standard in Tel Aviv and amazing sea views. Behind the urban, neat façade, lie 41 luxurious apartments and 7 spacious lofts; all with spectacular views of the Mediterranean through floor to ceiling windows, and beautiful sea view balconies. Both the apartments (200 sqm each) and the lofts (189 sqm each) are designed as “smart homes”, equipped with high end technical systems. The building is designed by world-renowned architect Ranni Ziss who has experience in constructing luxury apartments, hotels, and other landmark projects in Israel and beyond. He has created a building which reflects the character of the White City and which is recognised by UNESCO because of its large number of Bauhaus style elements. At the same time it incorporates elements from the best modern luxury apartment buildings from around the world. It is an exclusive project built to a high standard, containing loft apartments, exclusive apartments, spacious penthouses, a swimming pool, a gym and a spa. Also the illumination reflects the high standards. To emphasize the style of the building and create interesting highlights, different linear LED lighting solutions were used. VarioLED™ OCEANOS was installed in the ground and VarioLED™ Flex VENUS was integrated into the stone benches in the outdoor area. Both luminaires emit a pleasant, diffused light and set attractive accents. In the gym, general lighting was realized with XOOMINAIRE 4262R, allowing a high luminance at a pleasantly wide light distribution. For additional information, please visit www.led-linear.com
  2. The Gantry Restaurant and Bar, Sydney Architect: Bates Smart Lighting design: Electrolight Product: VarioLED™ Flex VENUS White TV IP67 Customer: Pier One Sydney / The Gantry Restaurant and Bar Location: Sydney, Australia Photos: Rohan Venn Photography With spectacular views of Walsh Bay and the majestic Sydney Harbour, “The Gantry Restaurant and Bar” is one of the best waterfront restaurant locations in Sydney. Steeped in maritime history since 1912, The Gantry’s name pays homage to the original structures on iconic Pier One. The design by architectural firm Bates Smart combines industrial roots with a contemporary slick fitout with exposed pillars, steel framing, elegant furniture and timber flooring with rich, dark, moody lighting. From the reception area, the eye is drawn to the imposing bar with custom built boat-shaped lights floating above. Driven by the atmosphere of the location, Electrolight created this custom light sculpture. They drew inspiration from the “organic form and movement of the ocean’s creatures and the way modern yachts replicate these movements”. The work, named ‘Squelette’ was conceptualized by the Electrolight Sydney team and appointed to Axolotl for manufacturing. The lighting inside the unique sculpture is the VarioLED™ Flex VENUS TV in W827 – a fully flexible protected light line that could be adhered to the inside of the Squelette, creating an internal sculptural glow. The end result is an impressive light sculpture that is in perfect harmony with its environment. For additional information, please visit www.led-linear.com

  4. Golfclub Pärnu, Estonia Architect: Architect 11, Jürgen Lepper, Margus Soonets and Anto Savi Lighting design: BM Light OÜ Product: ADONIS HYDRA HD15 IP67 Customer: Pärnu Bay Golf Links Location: Pärnu, Estland Photos: BM Light OÜ Taking inspiration from a ball on a tee, the architects have created the ultimate in links course clubhouses. At the highest point on the course, the glass-walled restaurant offers a breathtaking 360-degree view – diners may enjoy the sea, forest, or golf course, or all three with just a turn of the head. The panoramic terrace is ideal for drinks and dining, or for an unparalleled view the first shots and finish of any tournament. The clubhouse is also nominated for the “World’s Best Golf Clubhouse” at the World Gold Awards 2016. In the dark especially the lighting characterizes the overall impression of the building. The linear light, encircling the building at the bottom of the balcony, was realized with ADONIS by LED Linear™. The IP67 protected luminaire with opal encapsulation is the ideal outdoor solution. The luminaire is protected against environmental influences and the emitted light is absolutely homogeneous and evenly lights the ground. Through the use of illumination it seems as if the building was floating, it gets a touch of lightness. 5. 301 Howard Street Lobby, San Francisco Architect: Huntsman Architectural Group Lighting design: Birkenstock Lighting Design, San Rafael Product: VarioLED™ Flex PHOBOS White TV IP67, VarioLED™ Flex HYDRA LD15 Customer: Vanbarton Group Location: San Francisco, USA Photos: David Wakely Photography Located at the heart of the emerging Transbay Terminal area, the building at the corner of Howard and Beale Streets suffered from an oddly configured corner entrance and under-utilized adjacent retail spaces. In order to remain competitive and attractive in the surrounding urban development, 301 Howard Street required a comprehensive renovation. The new vision was clear: transform the indistinguishable building entry into a welcoming and provocative beacon that serves as a new public amenity for tenants and visitors. The first step was to substantially reposition the building entrance from the corner to the center of the Howard Street facade. The new location provides clearer sightlines, improved access, and also increases the rentable ground floor retail space. An inspirational metaphor was established for the lobby's design through the concept of tidal movement - "push and pull". This gesture directly correlates the historic shoreline of the San Francisco Bay with the urban renewal of the SoMa neighborhood, which was once a harbor itself. The aquatic metaphor finds resonance in all aspects of the lobby's design, from light and materiality to the furniture selection. Scalloped layers of sanded plaster provide a dramatic backdrop at the ceiling plane, further emphasized by lines of light. Here the VarioLED™ Flex HYDRA LD15 W835 with an opal lens was used. This undulating gesture is mirrored in the reveals of the terrazzo flooring, where pieces of glass achieve a sparkling luminosity. The patterned concrete wall at the building’s core serves as an elegant interpretation of a seawall, while the wood wrapped elevator lobbies mimic wooden docks. The custom-fabricated seating sculptures by renowned artist, Matthias Pliessnig, were deliberately stained in driftwood tones, and are constructed much like the lightweight seagoing vessels the artist also produces. The reception desk area was illuminated with VarioLED™ Flex PHOBOS TV in W827, creating a soft warm light. As light filters through the building façade throughout the day, interior lighting levels correspond, creating a different, dramatic impression each time one traverses the lobby. Through a restrained yet striking design, the new lobby enhances the visitor experience by creating a strong sense of place. For additional information, please visit www.led-linear.com
  6. A total of 16 pcs of P-5 LED wash lights played a crucial role in the festival Moscow Ice. In the Family Circle, which was a huge ice installation in Moscow’s Victory Park (Park Pobedy). The festival represented landmarks from Russian cities such as Moscow, Crimea, St Petersburg, Volgograd and Vladivostok. The statues were 5-6 metres high and together they formed an ice city completely made from real Siberian ice. More than 1,000 tonnes of natural blue ice had been shipped in for the construction. The Kremlin fortress, which was no less than 10m high and 40 m long, was the centerpiece of the ice city. From six slides descending from the Kremlin wall, visitors could glide their way down to the different regions of Russia. The sculptures were art pieces in themselves, but adding colored light to them added a whole new dimension and brought them to life after dark. Using P-5 wash lights for seven of the sculptures, including the massive Kremlin fortress, Lighting Designers Babalyants Sergei and Andrei Kalinkin certainly achieved that. Managing Director from rental company Bogdan & Brigada explained why they chose these exact wash lights from SGM for the project: “The P-5’s IP65-rating makes it a waterproof fixture, which furthermore has no functionality problems when operating in minus degrees. This was an absolute deal breaker in our selection of lighting fixtures for this outdoor venue, especially considering the tough Russian winter conditions. Additionally, we also had our eyes on the P-5 as it is a very powerful wash light that can be directed with its interchangeable lenses and the option to slide on barndoors. We find SGM to be a reliable partner and we have had much support from the cooperation with their Regional Sales Manager.” Besides the lighting setup for ice sculptures, there were also applied 20 pcs. of P-5 and 10 pcs. of Q-7 on a stage that was used for different entertainment features from December 28 – January 8. This was undertaken by rental company Spin Music Service. By popular request, the well-attended festival was extended until January 29, 2017. Applied products: P-5 Q-7 Original: sgmlight

  10. SORAA’S LED LIGHTING BRINGS ART TO LIFE IN HONG KONG HOTEL Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, announced that its LED lamps have been installed at the Hotel Stage in the heart of Kowloon, Hong Kong. More than just a hotel, the Hotel Stage serves as a quiet retreat amidst the energetic Yau Ma Tei neighborhood and a stage for local artists to showcase their work. Driven by this passion to showcase local art, the Hotel Stage required energy efficient lighting that could create a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere in the hotel’s exceptional communal spaces, as well as accurately render colors of the creative artwork. The Hotel Stage worked with Koichi Tanaka, a lighting designer at LIGHTLINKS, who chose approximately two thousand of Soraa VIVID lamps to illuminate the distinct conversation areas and set off the art pieces. To complement the hotel’s minimalist design, artwork becomes the focus of guests’ attention with Soraa’s tightly controlled beam distribution. Soraa’s Point Source Optic technology, enabled by the company’s GaN on GaN™ LED, crisply illuminates any area with a single sharp shadow, providing unparalleled contrast and depth. “The undeniable benefit for using Soraa LED lamps is that we can render all materials with true color. This was of the upmost importance to us for both the hotel application and to accurately illuminate the artwork,” said Koichi Tanaka, CEO, LIGHTLINKS International Limited. Utilizing every color in the rainbow, especially deep red emission, Soraa’s lamps render warm tones beautifully and accurately, and achieve a color-rendering index (CRI) of 95 and deep red (R9) rendering of 95. Plus, unlike blue-based white LEDs without any violet/ultra-violet emission, the company’s lamps have violet emission to properly excite fluorescing brightening agents in paper, textiles and paints. 13. Increase milk production (an 8 percent) and reduce energy consumption with long day lighting Research over the past 33 years has shown that long-day lighting (LDL) has a significant positive impact on milk production in dairy cows. LDL refers to increasing the daily light photoperiod for milk herds to 16 to 18 hours at intensity of 15 to 20 foot-candles of light, followed by a dark period of 8 to 6 hours of three foot-candles or less of light. However, Michigan dairy farmers have been unsuccessful in attaining the full benefits of LDL due to technical difficulties in measuring/maintaining light intensity and appropriately controlling the lighting system. 14. RGBW Smart LED Panels Aurora Siri Voice Control With so much visual stimuli passing by our eyes every day thanks to social media, many people are finding that committing to static pieces of artwork is more difficult than ever. If you're looking for something to spruce up your walls, but feel that a single painting or photo isn't enough to capture your ever-changing moods, the new Nanoleaf Aurora offers an interesting solution. Described as "living paint" by the Toronto-based lighting design company, this modular system of energy-efficient LED panels is fully customizable, and can be controlled by remote, smartphone app, or even your voice. Composed of nine lightweight, triangular LED lights that can be fit together in different configurations, the Nanoleaf Aurora can light up your wall (or any other flat surface in your home) using a palette of over 16 million colors. It can go from a soothing white light in the morning to a blaze of energizing purples, blues and greens during the day to a relaxing warm light in the evening–or pretty much any other type mood lighting you can imagine. The Nanoleaf Aurora Smarter lighting kit was made for DIY installation and includes 9 RGBW Smart LED Panels, 9 Panel Connectors, 9 Mounting Stencils, 28 Mounting Strips, 1 Power Supply Unit, and 1 Controller Unit. Because the panels weigh so little, there’s no need to drill any holes in your walls, making the Aurora ideal for renters as well. While the Aurora does come with a controller, the panels can also be configured using the Nanoleaf Smarter Series app or with your voice through Siri and Apple HomeKit. Because the Aurora is tunable white, it can also be used to mimic daylight, meaning it can double as a mood-enhancing light for those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or for anyone who could use a bit more natural light in their lives. Nanoleaf says they also plan on releasing a ‘sunrise’ function soon that will allow the Aurora to gradually get brighter each morning as a gentle way to help people wake up. 15. Magnetic and modular LEDs can cover a wall in light Helios is a modular touch screen wall light. This design allows the user to effectively swipe where they want or need light, turning the walls into a canvas for illumination using their hand as the brush. The combination of modularity and the lighting controls equals a product that can be completely tailored by the user. This product provides the opportunity for a lighting solution that is specific to each and every environment. A finger touch turns the panels on and off This product consists of multiple plastic hexagons that can be connected together via magnets and interlocking patterns to form a touch screen wall light. The magnets that form the physical connection between components also allow the electricity to pass through from one piece to another. Prototype on display and winning prizes With the power running through the product, each individual component is turned on and off via a capacitive touch sensor incorporated into each piece. The underlying idea for the product is to give the user the ability to turn the interior architecture of a space into the light source. It gives potential for the user to just swipe the surface of the wall and it will illuminate the path of their touch. Turning the interior architecture into a canvas for illumination with the users hand as the brush. Create any shape and turn on individual panels as you swipe your hand across. Each 6.3 W unit is said to produce 400 lm, which is about the same brightness as a 40 W incandescent bulb or a 6 W LED bulb. Each module added, therefore, will be like lighting a room with an additional bulb and up to 105 modules can be joined together in one circuit. A display can be bigger than 105 modules, but they must be on different circuits. More information is available here.

  19. OMOTESANDO HILLS CHRISTMAS 2017 Omotesando Hills, a shopping complex in central Tokyo, has entered a new stage in its 11th year, with an aspiration to create and transmit "culture". To materialize this vision, Omotesando Hills has collaborated with Emmanuelle to bring fusion of Illumination and "Art" into the mall for the Christmas season. Emmanuelle’s first illumination has become a fantastical space filled with gentle and warm lights created by her 100 colors. The illumination "Christmas Forest in 100 colors" was inspired from the scenery of layers of trees lining up along the main boulevard in Omotesando, in which this scenery was recaptured into the void of the large stairway of Omotesando Hills. 1500 mini trees in 100 different colors filled the whole void in 13.4m high, and the "Forest of Colors" spread overwhelmingly. Each mini tree wrap the light bulb in colored papers, like a lantern, to make 100 colors themselves to emit a soft and gentle light. Inside this colorful forest, the main tree is located at the center of the large stairway with a height of 7m, which is formed by a collection of mini trees that light up in white during the open hours. From each level, different views of the illumination are captured, to encourage visitors to walk up and down the slope naturally to make the most of the main characteristic of this building, the slope. Santa Claus and reindeers that appears inside the main tree are hidden in the forest, add playfulness to the illumination for the visitors to search around. At the special show "Emotional Reflection" held every 30 minutes, the main tree changes its colors from white, yellow, pink, green, blue and to rainbow, with other mini trees lighting up rhythmically with the music specially composed for this occasion. Colors, music, and light resonate and respond to each others, inviting visitors into the warm and magical Christmas. Source: lednews.lighting

Specialist manufacturers of bespoke theatrical and lighting effects Specialz have supplied a unique lighting display to this award-winning museum in Dublin EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum is Dublin’s newest museum, dedicated to one of the pivotal facets of Irish history: that of Irish emigration. In the perfectly appropriate location, the museum is situated in Dublin’s Docklands on the Custom House Quay, the departure point for many of Ireland’s emigrants in the 19th Century. Within the museum are twenty themed interactive galleries that take visitors on a journey through Irish history and, through interactive and immersive technology, connects all those who claim Irish connections and heritage with a unique and powerful experience. Amongst the myriad of rooms dedicated to the global influence of the Irish culture through migration is a space entitled Science & Innovation. Within this gallery, visitors are familiarised with those of Irish descent who have been key in the development of scientific and technology progress. As an introduction to the mysteries of the Irish psyche, the Synapse provides a spectacular visual interpretation of the brain’s inner workings. This artistic impression that also provides light and visual movement to the gallery was designed by Adam Grater. “There was indeed a dual purpose to this installation,” opens Grater. “It’s title, The Synapse, explains what it represents but it also creates atmosphere and provides ambience in the way it physically illuminates the space. Once I had an idea of what I wanted I went to Dave Smith at Specialz to turn my thoughts into a workable reality.” Source: livedesignonline

  23. 1000-Watt LED Floodlight Provides Fantastic Nighttime Video Effects Along with drone technology and the advancement of user-modified drones, another thing that has also been evolving is LED technology and the way people use it. In this four-minute video, you will see a good example of the combination of these two technologies, as Stratus Productions mounted a 1000-watt LED light to a Freefly Systems Alta 8 drone. The story of building the 1000-watt LED bar started last year, and in this video, it is attached to a drone for its first flight. As it's told in the video, with some battery modification, both the drone and the LED bar can run for about ten minutes. Taking the required power into consideration, ten minutes of running time sounds miraculous. In addition to lighting aerial videos at night, this experimental system (or builds similar to this system) can also be used for a variety of other purposes, from lighting subjects at any time of the day when shooting from the ground to aiding in search and rescue activities. If you have any LED-based custom-modification experience with drones, please share it with us in the comments below. For some gorgeous sample footage shot with this rig, skip straight to the two-minute mark in the video.
  24.
