  1. Warm white or Cool white? Colour Temperature - With conventional lamps, choosing the “colour of light” emitted by a lamp was not a choice that was generally made. With some LED products, there is a choice of colours, choosing a colour will set the mood of your space. Correlated Colour temperature (CCT) in lighting describes how the colour of the light appears from a lamp, measured in kelvins (K). Imagine a scale from 1000K (very red) to 10,000K (very blue) (actual scale is wider). The higher up the scale you go, the closer the light resembles blue daylight. Confusingly, colour temperature does not describe the actual temperature of the lamp itself but the colour it produces and counter-intuitively; the higher the colour temperature the “cooler” a lamp will look. Put simply, colour temperature is based on how the colour of heated metal changes as its temperature is increased - turning from red to yellow then blue. You can then determine the temperature of a heated metal by its colour. This range of colours at different temperatures has become useful for describing the colour tint of white light. The colour of light from an LED lamp is approximated or “correlated” to this scale. Warm or cool? There are no rules - the choice is about personal preference and use. If you like the traditional yellowish colour of a conventional lamp then warm white around (2700-3000K ) would be the ideal choice, this is the most popular choice for homes. If you want a modern, clean look, you may prefer the cleaner, brighter feel of a cool white lamp (4000K+). Cool white light contains more blue light and looks brighter to the eye (this is why cool white bulbs have a higher lumen output when compared to the equivalent warm white bulb). It also seems people from sunnier countries tend to prefer white light compared to people from cooler countries who prefer more warm light. In commercial applications choosing the right colour temperature is important and will depend on the mood you want to create and the products you are promoting - for example freshly baked cookies and bread may look better under a warm white light. A cool white light may not make the product look as appealing but it would be a good idea to do some trials to see what works best. Where can I use them? Below are some common areas where the different colours can be used: Warm to Warm white – living room, bedroom, hallway Day White to White – kitchen, study, bathroom, cupboard, office, retail White to Cool white - Commercial, retail, art studios Allow some time to get used to any change especially if changing from warm to cool white. 2. On the Wings of Freedom Butterflies are the symbol of change, creativity, soul freedom, joy and colour. Their power is transformation, shape shifting and evolution. Butterflies represent transformation and freedom across all cultures; ‘Bright Cities’ are places where people can grow culturally, socially and broaden their mind; our glowing butterflies are symbols of this potential change and cultural evolution. The swarm of butterflies creates an array of RGB LEDs which are individually addressable and are choreographed for rich lighting effects based on the audience interaction. 4. Patients in intensive care feel better with light adapted to the time of day New research shows that the light environment in intensive care affects how patients feel - even a year after completed hospitalization. With light adapted to the time of day, health even improves for patients who are barely conscious when they are admitted for care. “It is really important with a normal circadian rhythm and light is the environmental factor that has the greatest affect,” says Marie Engwall, doctoral student in Health and Care Sciences at the Sahlgrenska Academy and assistant lecturer at University of Borås, with a background as an ambulance nurse anesthetist. Here research is about severely ill or injured patients who are admitted for intensive care, initially often an anesthetized state and in a hospital environment where investigations and treatments must be able to operate around the clock. Many patients are confused and lost with regards to what day it is, and this is where light comes in. In order to counterbalance the traditional ICU department with low levels of daylight and nights when lighting is frequently turned on, and experimental environment with so-called cyclical lighting that changed during the day into fourteen different light scenarios. Calming function Mornings began with a weak, reddish dawn light, which, at around 8 am turned to a strong, blue light similar to daylight. In the middle of the day, the strength of the light was reduced slightly so that patients would also be able to experience existing daylight to subsequently be increased again in the afternoon. Towards the evening, the light became weaker and warmer again. At that time, the light sources were also placed at a lower height; in the evening only a weak and warm light was emitted from the skirting boards. All this to resemble natural light throughout the day. “The patients were very satisfied with the lighting environment. It had a calming function and helped in supporting the circadian rhythm, Earlier research shows that it is very important with a stable circadian rhythm for hormonal levels and other physiological function in the body,” says Marie Engwall. The survey that was conducted 6 months after discharge did not provide any clear picture of the recovery of the patients. Marie Engvall describes this time as a fragile period for many of them. However, after another 6 months there was a different tune when the same on hundred patients were once again asked about the physical and mental health, appetite and sleep. Significantly better “Patients cared for in our experimental room demonstrated significantly better self-rated recovery after twelve months compared to patients in the control group. I do no claim that everything is a result of the light, but there is an indication and a clear finding here that we can continue working with,” says Marie Engwall. Her research focuses on the patient but even the impressions of healthy visitors evaluated in a questionnaire gave positive results. Staff were not consulted in the studies in question, but nevertheless, Marie Engwall has received some response during the course of the process. “They really like the light that provides good working light during the day. At night time, the levels are lower than what they are used to in order for patients to be able to sleep better,” she says. Link to the thesis
  5. LED for Triemli hospital When the new ward block at Triemli hospital in Zurich is in full operation in 2015, 600 Sanapro luminaires equipped with LED modules and LED drivers from Tridonic will be used to illuminate the patient rooms. Location: Zurich/Switzerland. Products: Modules LLE, LED Drivers LCAI, DALI-RM For the patient rooms in the new ward block the architects Aeschlimann Hasler Partner and the lighting designers at Reflexion AG looked for a special luminaire that would meet the requirements of patients, doctors, nursing staff and hospital administrators. Following their specifications, the engineers and designers at Prolux Licht AG developed a modular profile luminaire featuring lighting units for gentle room light, glare-free and shadow-free reading light and bright light from the head to the foot of the bed for medical examinations. Linear LLE LED modules from Tridonic are used as the light sources for all three lighting functions. Each luminaire is equipped with ten LED engines in two different versions. There is also a single LED that functions as a night light. With all the lighting functions activated at full luminous flux, the luminaire has a power draw of 126 W and provides a total luminous flux of 10,387 lumen. The LED engines are operated on two LED Drivers of type Driver LCAI one4all integrated in the luminaire housing. The lighting functions can be switched separately via DALI and also dimmed, with the exception of the night light. A Tridonic DALI control module is used to connect the night light to the DALI controller. This Zurich hospital will certainly not be the only place where Sanapro luminaires with their powerful and durable LED lighting and compact and easy-to-clean housing will be providing impressive results. 6. The small, sophisticated tool for outdoor lighting: ERCO Kona XS projectors, floodlights and wallwashers With Kona XS, ERCO presents a new system of outdoor lighting tools designed to complete the range of compact luminaires with low power consumption. Kona XS may be small in design, but it is big on quality, with lighting technology and a robust construction that meet the professional standards of architects, lighting designers, landscape and urban planners. There are many situations in private or public outdoor lighting projects where small and precise lighting tools are preferable to a powerhouse approach - especially when used in urban areas, in parks or for objects around buildings. Often, the required criteria in these applications, such as glare control or flexibility, are easier to meet with several smaller luminaires than fewer large options. ERCO has developed the new Kona XS range specifically for this purpose - the smallest outdoor projector in the ERCO range has been reduced to the essential, offering an efficient and robust tool for effortless planning and implementation of outdoor lighting solutions. Reduced to the essential Kona XS adopts the design of its larger cousins in the Kona range, with a modern, tapered housing made of high-quality cast aluminium in an understated and distinct design. Finished with a double powder-coating for a durable refined look, the system supports easy maintenance and, thanks to an IP65 rating, withstands exposure to dust and water, making it suitable for a multitude of lighting tasks in the outdoor area. The sturdy hinge with internal wiring can be locked in position for secure fixing of the beam direction, with a rotatable mounting plate for pinpoint alignment. Precise and efficient lighting concepts All luminaires in the Kona XS range feature highly efficient Spherolit LED lenses, offering the superb lighting quality and large range of distribution options that lighting designers have come to expect from ERCO: projectors ranging from narrow spot and spot to flood, floodlights with rotationally symmetrical wide flood light distribution, and lens wallwashers with asymmetrical light distribution for highly uniform wallwashing of vertical surfaces. True to the ERCO luminaire system concept, all options are available with warm white (3000K) and neutral white LEDs (4000K), while different lumen packages broaden the scope for creative solutions still further. As a result, Kona XS enables precise and efficient lighting concepts in the outdoor area without detracting from the magic of the night. Technical features ERCO lens system: Spherolit lens, collimator made of optical polymer, light distributions: narrow spot, spot, flood, wide flood, wallwash ERCO LED module: High-power LEDs on metal-core PCB, light colours: warm white or neutral white, 3000 or 4000K Housing: Cast aluminium, IP65, with No-Rinse surface treatment, double powder-coated, Graphit m Mounting: Mounting plate rotatable through 240°, cast aluminium, internal wiring Control gear: Switchable Lens wallwashers Uniform vertical illuminance in the outdoor area defines spatial borders. Here, the distance (a) of Kona XS lens wallwashers from the wall should be around one third of the room height (h). This results in an angle of tilt (a) of approx. 55°. Arrangement: a = 1/3 x h bzw. γ = 55° For good longitudinal uniformity, the spacing (d) of Kona XS lens wallwashers may be up to 1.2 times the offset from the wall (a). Arrangement: d ≤ 1.2 x a Optimal wall offset and luminaire spacing values are indicated in the wallwasher tables on the product data sheets. Source: erco

  10. Fantastic Planet Six giant illuminated humanoid figures have invaded our planet. These giants from afar will give audiences the impression that they have just landed and are quietly and gently exploring our ‘fantastic planet’. As with Parer’s globally successful public art exhibit Intrude, these forms are not randomly placed sculptures but rather can be strategically placed to give the impression that the giant humanoids have taken over an entire land or cityscape. Inspiration for this light installation has been taken from the 1973 Czech/ French film Fantastic Planet (French: La Planète sauvage). This stop motion science fiction film directed by René Laloux depicted a story set in an unimaginably distant future in a world of gargantuan humanoids and where human beings are a feral race. This view is shared by naturalist and television presenter David Attenborough, where he has stated that humans are threatening their own existence and that of other species by using up the world’s resources. “We are a plague on the Earth. It’s not just climate change; it’s sheer space, places to grow food for this enormous horde. Either we limit our growth or the natural world will do it for us,” he told the BBC Radio Times.
