The 5 Biggest Myths in LED Lighting In their early stages, most new technologies are the subjects of myths that are either exaggerations or inaccuracies, if they are not altogether incorrect. LED lighting has been the subject of many myths since the first installations of LED systems appeared several years ago. Many of those myths denigrated LED lighting on the basis of cost and performance. As LED technology has improved, early-stage problems have disappeared but the myths have remained. Rather than falling prey to those myths, organizations that are considering LED lighting for their own operations should base their decisions on objective facts about modern LED lighting systems. Myth: LED lighting is expensive. Fact: As with many new technologies, the first generations of LED lighting systems were costlier than traditional metal halide or high-pressure sodium alternatives. Upfront acquisition and installation costs have since fallen dramatically and LED retrofits or new installations can now be completed at competitive price points to those traditional systems. Moreover, LED lighting generates the same or better illumination with substantially lower power input. Upfront system costs are usually recovered very quickly from utility cost savings alone. Myth: Light from LED bulbs is too harsh or bright. Fact: New LED bulbs and control systems give operators much more flexibility to alter the color temperature and color coordinated index (“CCI”) of LED illumination to tone down the perceived harshness that might have plagued earlier LED systems. Modern fixtures and lenses also help to disperse lighting and to reduce glare from brighter bulbs. Myth: All LED bulbs are identical. Some LED systems might cost less than others, but those lower-cost systems might not have the newest technology that creates improved lighting performance. Myth: LED lamps never need to be replaced. Fact: LED’s last substantially longer than traditional lighting fixtures, but the will need to be replaced at some point. Myth: LEDs have sub-par color rendering index properties Fact: Incandescents have a perfect color rendering index (CRI) of 100, so when alternative energy-saving lighting solutions like fluorescents came to the market, people were disappointed in the quality of the light. And rightly so. Many compact fluorescents have a low CRI of 50. Most LEDs have a solid CRI of 80, with High CRI options available when color rendering is very important (like in restaurants, retail stores, galleries, etc). Schallberg Tunnel Lit with LED Lighting Thanks to LED lighting from Tridonic, the Schallberg tunnel on the Simplon Pass is much brighter. The extensive, two-and-a-half-year renovation transformed the dark 1970s constructed tunnel in the Swiss Alps. The 45 km long Simplon Pass between Brig and Iselle is one of the most important transit routes in the Swiss Alps that has numerous tunnels, bridges, and galleries, most of which have been in operation since the 1960s or 70s and greatly need of repair. The Renovation of the 500 m long Schallberg tunnel at the beginning of the pass could not be delayed. “This was a complete renovation job, involving all the tunnel elements. Among other things, we repaired the two galleries, built a new escape tunnel, lowered the road in some places to provide adequate clearance for trucks, and put down a new road surface,” said Mark Siegenthaler from ASTRA, the Swiss Federal Roads Office. In addition to replacing the lighting and lighting controls, the renovation upgraded the operational and safety equipment, the ventilation system, and the power supply. Tridonic points out that now the Schallberg tunnel with its new LED lighting is bright and inviting. Swiss lighting specialist, Rigamonti supplied a total of 100 transition zone luminaires and 150 interior zone luminaires, and Tridonic supplied the “inner workings” of the luminaires. Also, the emergency lights on the walls, the escape exit signs, the escape route lights, and the escape route indicators all use LED components from Tridonic. The transition zone luminaires in the entrance and exit zones feature new RLE series LED modules that Tridonic developed specifically for tunnel lighting according to Rigamonti’s specifications. Although the entrances and exits of tunnels are high-risk areas for accidents because of the abrupt change in lighting conditions, the risk can be reduced with the right artificial lighting. Each transition zone luminaire contains two LED modules. The modules operate at a current of 350 mA, consume 112 W and generate a luminous flux of 18,350 lm. Only the last three luminaires of the transition zone use only one LED module. This lower light level eases the lighting transition as vehicles proceed to the interior zone. The LED technology allows the luminaire to have a low-profile design. The luminaires measure 1,550 mm long and 170 mm wide but only 40 mm (4 cm) deep. Tridonic based the new customized LED modules for the interior zone on its LLE Series modules. Five of the customized modules were put in each luminaire. With an operating current of 300 mA, the interior zone luminaires consume 38.25 W and provide 6,365 lm. An emission angle of 120° and correlated color temperature of 6,500 K combined with the light output produce the recommended average carriageway luminances of 45 cd/m2 in the entrance zone and 3 cd/m2 in the tunnel’s interior. The Rigamonti luminaires use 1-100% dimmable constant-current LED drivers from Tridonic’s Premium series to help ensure optimum operating conditions for the LEDs modules. The drivers allow adjustable output currents and have integrated short-circuit, overtemperature, and overload protection. In the ice hockey game on the Zugspitze, at an altitude of just under 3,000 meters, this technology was exposed to extreme conditions. intu Victoria Centre, Nottingham » Retail Lighting Design The £40 million re-model and refresh of intu Victoria Centre, Nottingham has transformed the Centre’s tired appearance, creating a vibrant and bold retail interior. Optelma worked with lighting designers Hoare Lea Lighting to design and develop large, bespoke feature pendants that would work with the scale of the central mall. Suspended in the skylight bays, these elegant two-metre-high moulded ‘Conico’ pendants are key elements, which visually separate the retail spaces from the food and beverage courts, while softening the overall impression. The custom-built pendants feature RGBW LEDs which enable a dynamic, yet subtle, uniform colour-change to take place throughout the day. This mirrors the colour-change within the walkways, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated visual appearance. Each Conico pendant has a 3000lm Xicato downlight built into the base, providing general illumination beneath as well as a platform for the emergency lighting. Martin Breeden Development Director of intu commented: ‘The refurbishment of intu Victoria Centre has enhanced the centre’s look and feel throughout, and the lighting design has really complemented this, helping us to achieve a modern and welcoming environment.' Refresh of intu Victoria Centre in Nottingham included a full upgrade, with the aim of transforming the Centre’s tired appearance and creating a fresh, exciting interior, while introducing a lit personality to the façade. In addition, the project delivered a prominent new southern entrance and a two-level catering cluster centred on the Grade II listed clock tower. Hoare Lea Lighting was appointed by intu to design a new lighting scheme for intu Victoria Centre. To give the interior a fresh dynamism, many of the finishes were taken back to the primary structure before new layers were applied. The remodelling has allowed the daylight function to be enhanced and for the integration of energy-efficient artificial lighting. This has enabled the creation of a softly lit environment, in which strong visual architecture is supported by lighting. Linear forms characterise the architectural enhancements and this language is echoed in the lighting design. Indirect linear lighting to the soffit provides ambient light (from ACDC’s Orelle) in a fresh 4000K white light. This contrasts with the warmer, more relaxing treatment of 3000K within the food and beverage courts. Here, linear ‘tramlines’ of light, from KKDC’s Lini Glow XL, run across the ceiling, their architectural forms spilling into the main malls, adding an exuberant feel and giving a playful visual lead from one space to the next. Hidden sources and integrated lighting combine with white light and RGB colour-change for a clean, dynamic feel. On the walkways, soft washes from hidden lines-of-light are punctuated by pools of light created by spotlights and downlights from Lumenpulse/ AlphaLED and iGuzzini. Peripheral coves running parallel with the walkways are washed with a hidden RGBW linear product (Traxon’s 1PXL Cove Light), which allows for a subtle, slow, uniform colour-change throughout the day. This colour change is mirrored by RGBW feature pendants in the central mall, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated visual appearance. Suspended in the skylight bays, the ‘Conico’ pendants, custom-built by Optelma, are key visual features which work to visually separate the main retail mall spaces from the food and beverage courts, while softening the overall impression of the malls. Commenting on the design, Chris Fox, Senior Lighting Designer, Hoare Lea said: ‘The approach we took was that of ‘lighting through layers’ – combining direct and indirect sources to build a visual scene with various options. Control allows dimming of groups of luminaires to create scenes and for the switching between pre-programed scenes throughout the day. ‘ The exterior of the Centre has been transformed, with the dated 1970s brutalist concrete facade now clad in a clean, contemporary finish. As night falls, the back-lit cladding comes alive with light and colour. White light follows the building’s form, washing each panel in a neutral 4000K, supplied by Osram’s LINEARLight Power Flex. The cladding surrounding the main entrance has a linear wash. DMX feeds give control over each panel and, using a bespoke RGB lensed product from NJO Technology, turn the entrance into an eye-catching media façade. The Clock Tower, an icon on the Nottingham cityscape, has been given a traditional uplight treatment, which complements the architecture, while contrasting with the new backlit entrance cladding and glazed entrance. Ground-recessed uplights, from Bega, illuminate the red brickwork in 3000K, while spotlights (ACDC’s Plaza) pick out the higher levels and the clock face.
