Hunke jewellers and opticians is a family business with a long and rich tradition in the town of Ludwigsburg, Germany. Situated in the centre of one of Europe’s most renowned baroque cities, the owners planned to fuse the historical, traditional townhouse which hosted their established store with a newly built, neighbouring corner house. In consequence, the interior design concept was meant to be a one-of-a-kind fusion of past and future elements, using premium materials. The aim of the lighting concept was, to underline and sharpen this approach. The ambient lighting in the jeweller’s part oft the store is generated by large fields of illuminated ceilings, integrated in an accurately shaped drywall ceiling structure. Random arranged spheres of diffuse glass complete the ambiance and serve as illumination for the facial area. The bright and brilliant product lighting is generated by recessed, adjustable downlights with reflectors made of dichroic glass, again integrated in a custom made drywall ceiling construction. The showcases are illuminated by a combination of two lighting principles: the back wall is brightened up from top to bottom by a diffuse linear LED-strip, and the products are highlighted by directional miniaturized spotlights with different beam angles and colour temperatures. An elaborate filter layer behind the shopwindows generates a fascinating link between exterior and interior: a glass pane, printed with a gradient and supported by floor-integrated linear lighting, generates transparence as well as privacy. The very centre of the store is the two-storey lounge area, situtated in the oldest part of the building. It is dominated by a golden ceiling setback with a bundle of 40 custom made glass pendants in a random arrangement. In the opticians store, an accurately arranged system of thin black ceiling lines with integrated track lighting provides an optimal flexibility for the different requirements of the illumination. A combination of glare reduced downlights (circulation areas), wallwashers (showcase walls) and powerful linear lighting (consultant tables), accompanied by directional spotlights (shelves and tables) create a well balanced, glare reduced lighting atmosphere. PROJECT LUMO Having to stay in an oncological hospital is one of the worst situations a child can be in. A childhood is the period of a person’s life in which you develop yourself. As part of a multidisciplinary team of ten BSc students from Delft University of Technology I have created Lumo, an interactive hangout for children in the Prinses Maxima Hospital for child oncology. The goal of this hangout was to stimulate social development of teenagers between the ages of twelve to fourteen. The dynamic ongoing shape of Lumo creates a closed environment while having an open structure at the same time, provoking curiosity from the inside to the outside. This spiral structure offers children their own spot within the hospital, where they can play, sit or lie down. The final result was a working prototype, which was featured on the exhibition of the Summer Festival in Delft and during the SKION medical conference in Utrecht. My activities included planning, user research, ideation, interaction design, concept development, embodiment, prototyping, testing/validating, recruiting sponsors, communicating with the company and suppliers and procurement of materials and hardware parts. More than 20 years later, the brand is a subsidiary of MillerCoors, but in a nod to its local, craft brewer roots, Blue Moon has opened its own brewery and restaurant in Denver’s River North neighborhood. From a functional standpoint, the 30,000-square-foot standalone structure now provides what the space in the ballpark could not — dining and event space that also serves as a laboratory for research and development. Aesthetically speaking, the design team literally looked to the moon for inspiration — conceiving large-scale circular elements to help fill the wide-open interior space. The result are two 16-foot circles and 12 6-foot diameter rings made out of iLight Plexineon LED fixtures. The Midnight Special Studio ENESS transformed an old-school bus to take you on a trippy journey to stillness for their latest art installation, The Midnight Special. This LED installation was commissioned by Strawberry Fields Festival. From the outside, The Midnight Special has the appearance of a retro Australian school bus, but step inside and you are sucked into a futuristic gravitational vortex of choreographed light and sound. Colour shatters in hypnotising patterns across viewers who lie on the bus floor, soaking up the meditative ambience from the LED light show. The light vortex calms and speeds up playing visual tricks on the audience, who forget the structures are there between the illusive, floating light formations. The installation structure is an array of addressable LEDs designed by our team - each light was carefully mapped with specific content in collaboration with Hyper Reelist (Jobe Williams), then synchronised to react to a soundtrack composed for this experience by Mark Williams. The Midnight Special evokes nostalgic feelings mixed with the unseen, unfamiliar and unexperienced. The Midnight Special was last seen at Strawberry Fields Festival – a festival of music, art and love. Am Dienstag, 26. Mai 2015, wurde das neue Gebäude, kreiert von Zaha Hadid, enthüllt und Investcorp Gebäude genannt. Das 11 £ Millionen teure Gebäude aus Stahl und Glass wurde vom College in Auftrag gegeben, um den dringend benötigten Raum für das Middle East Center zur Verfügung zu stellen. Der Neubau verdoppelt den verfügbaren Platz für die wachsende Bibliothek und das Archiv des Middle East Centers und bietet fast 1.200 Quadratmeter zusätzliche Fläche und einen neuen Hörsaal mit 118 Sitzen. Die erfinderischen Lichtlösungen für das Investcorp Gebäude wurden von Arup geplant und bei den Lux Awards 2015 ausgezeichnet, wo Arup den Award „Education and Healthcare Lighting Project of the Year“ gewann. The newly built complex of buildings on a plot of 14,000 m² was opened in September 2015. During the construction much attention was paid to environmental protection and sustainable development, therefore the lighting was realized with LEDs. In the hallways, stairwells and common areas of the students linear lighting solutions from LED Linear™ were installed. The XOOLUM™ HYDRA HD15 W840 with opal cover was used, offering high luminance and a pleasant diffused light. The installation is also appealing from decorative perspective because the luminaires were mounted in the ceiling, so that they do not protrude.
