  1. The big switch: Abu Dhabi's plan to convert old lights to LEDs The retrofit to replace 42,632 inefficient lighting fixtures is one of the biggest plans of its kind in the world The white lights are the new LEDS, with the older yellow lights on the right in this shot of Abu Dhabi's Salam Street. Abu Dhabi Municipality If you live in Mushrif or the Capital Centre, then you could be among the first to have your old streetlamps replaced with LEDs. Abu Dhabi Municipality last month announced ambitious plans to replace 42,632 older, inefficient lighting fixtures across the island. It is one of the largest projects of its kind in the world. The older lights are mainly high pressure sodium or metal halide. They give off a familiar orange glow, but are also notoriously inefficient. The new LEDs, or luminaires, will be up to 90 per cent more efficient; cost 90 per cent less to maintain; and also will lead to an 80 per cent reduction in harmful CO2 emissions. The quality of light and the fact it is more even will make it better for drivers and pedestrians. “Electricity bills were so high with all the old lights,” said Eiman Alameri, from the municipal infrastructure and assets sector at Abu Dhabi Municipality. “They really consume a lot of energy – and Abu Dhabi wants everything to be more sustainable,” she said. The retrofit is set to start early next year once the tendering process is completed. Work will be undertaken in five phases across the island and each phase is expected to take three months. The island is set to be finished by the middle of 2019. Poles or foundations will not have to be touched and only the lighting fixture will have to be replaced. Newer projects on the island such as on Salam Street and on Yas Island for example already use LEDs and the new fixtures are expected to last for about 12 and a half years compared with two to three years for the older lights. “The project is one of the biggest of its type in the world,” said Martin Valentine, lighting expert at the municipality. Mr Valentine said the Abu Dhabi plan is way ahead of other global retrofits when it comes to the quality of light. “It’s not just about changing to save energy. We’re [also] improving the lighting on the roads. We’re reducing the pollution,” he said. Traditional street lights, known for their yellowish hue, will be relaunched with bright white LED lights across Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Municipality “A lot of other plans around the world are done purely on energy saving. They forget about the colour being too blue or light spilling into people’s houses. We are way ahead.” The initiative is also a public-private partnership. This is a relatively new phenomenon for the UAE but it is expected to become more widespread. Design, installation and maintenance will be taken care of by a private firm for a contract of about ten years. Then it's handed back to the municipality. “We want the private sector to be involved with the urban development of Abu Dhabi. We don’t want to have all the budgets coming from the government,” said Ms Alameri. While it is a public-private partnership, the municipality will retain control of the system. The retrofit includes the addition of a smart control system and it will yield consumption reports; identify failures; and allow lights to be dimmed at certain hours which will lead to even more savings. “These can be dimmed at times when traffic is quiet, after rush hour and between 1am and 5am,” said Mr Valentine. It is thought that there are 290,000 of the older lights still in use across the emirate. When the island retrofit is completed, it is believed that other areas of the emirate will be next. Local authorities around the word have been looking at introducing LEDs to cut costs. In some cities, such as Rome, residents have complained that harsh white light emanating from these new LEDs has distorted the ambience of the city. But for Mr Valentine, crude implementation is to blame. There are nine colour temperature options when it comes to LEDs, and these range from warmer yellow light to a harsh blue light. “You have to look at colour temperature. A historic city centre and a main road are completely different things. We encourage warmer colours for the streets,” said Mr Valentine. “We are not going too cold on the colour temperatures as some cities have and they’ve done that to save money. We banned the cold blue white colours from Abu Dhabi. We’ve got a neutral white colour which is the most efficient warm colour. "Maybe a lot of cities haven’t thought about the social and environmental aspects as well as the economic. It’s important all three are looked at in every design.” Source: thenational
  2. An advantage for success at the Hong Kong Science Museum Since its opening, the Hong Kong Science Museum has captivated the public’s curiosity through interactive and enlightening exhibitions. Housing over 500 exhibits in an area that spans over 65,000 square meters, the Museum recently opened a series of new exhibits designed to encourage a greater understanding of the world all around us. Wanting to implement an energy-efficient LED lighting system to accentuate the exhibits, the Museum called upon longtime partner Pacific Lighting Ltd who provided them with complete system of Altman Lighting Pegasus, Spectra Cyc 50 and ME4 luminaires. “We have a long and successful history of working with the Hong Kong Science Museum designing and installing a number of their exhibition lighting systems,” began Hugh Chinnick, Pacific Lighting Director and Project Lighting Designer. “With the latest exhibition, they wanted to use LED technology when possible so the choice of fixtures had to be carefully managed. Although there was no detailed design brief, we knew they wanted the lighting design to create the appropriate theatrical atmosphere, so we chose to implement a system of Altman Lighting LED luminaires.” Source: altmanlighting

  4. Carpetlight: State of the Art Lighting Technology combined with Textiles Carpetlight, founded by Götz Schmidt zur Nedden and Till Sadlowski and based in Hamburg, Germany, finally found a way to offer customized flexible lamps in any size with any combination of LEDs to lighting professionals. The brilliant product reaches brightness and color rendering indices that have never been achieved before. On the contrary to other smart-textile technologies currently used in design and fashion which are merely glimmering or decorative fabrics, Carpetlights´s novel product delivers a luminous output high enough to light whole objects and rooms. The lighting system comes in predefined packages for scene-, film- and stage lighting, but is even great for any custom architectural application, both in indoor and outdoor environments. Different groups from the lighting profession have been dreaming for a while of truly flexible light sources. Initially, OLED lighting was promoted as the best future solution, but meanwhile, quite a few alternatives such as flexible- and planar lighting solutions appeared on the market. The lighting system is lightweight, flexible, versatile, efficient and can be adapted to any desired form or function by folding, rolling, crumpling, hanging, wrapping, hooking or stretching it. The product is excellent for use at fashion shows, exhibitions, architectural applications, interior design or archeological excavations. More information: lighting-inspiration

  12. Liz West’s Sevenfold, UK Lighting design: Liz West Product: XOOTUBE™ HYDRA HD15 Customer: The Met Location: Bury, UK Photos: Jim Stephenson Fabrication: M3 Industries When The Met opens its doors in December 2016, following a £4.6 million refurbishment, at the centre of the historical building will be a newly commissioned art installation by internationally renowned artist, Liz West. The installation, Sevenfold, will mark the completion of this project to transform one of the North’s leading cultural live music, theatre and arts venues located in the heart of Bury. The site-responsive piece will inject vibrant colours and a sense of illusion into the magnificent entrance and staircase of the Victorian neo-classical building. Light is very important to Liz’s work, and this is a space that is flooded with natural light, which Sevenfold will draw upon to highlight the architecture and magnificence of The Met’s 1840s architecture. Sevenfold takes its reference from Newton’s rainbow sequence of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Seven (six prisms in the main installation plus one mini above the reception desk) individual and vast prisms have been created that use mirrors to further radiate colour and reflect elements of the beautifully restored architecture. As visitors ascend the staircase they find themselves at eye level with the artwork, giving the chance to marvel Sevenfold at its luminous best. David Agnew, artistic director of The Met, says, “We wanted to celebrate the light and sense of rejuvenation that the restoration of this stunning building has opened up and embraced. The vision of this project is to use the past to illuminate the future, which Liz’s piece perfectly embodies. As people enter the building they’ll be able to enjoy the visual spectacle of Sevenfold as it radiates against the vastness and intricacy of the Victorian plasterwork.” Liz West says, “I am delighted to be given this opportunity to make my first permanent installation, it is an honour to be asked to make a new work in such an magnificent and multi-purpose setting. The light-based, theatrical and immersive nature of my work ties in perfectly with The Met and the buildings use. I hope that visitors enjoy my work for many years to come and are able to see new elements within the installation every time they look at the piece.” Liz lives and works in Manchester, having studied at Glasgow School of Art. Her commissions and residencies have included: Bristol Biennial; Natural History Museum, London; Castlefield Gallery New Art Spaces, Manchester; Royal British Society of Sculptors, London; National Media Museum, Bradford. In 2016 Liz was shortlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize and the Lighting Design Awards. For additional information, please visit www.led-linear.com
  13. OSMO Showroom, Estonia Lighting design: BM Light OÜ Product: XOOLUM™ HYDRA HD10 IP40, XOOLUM™ R HYDRA LD15 IP20, XOOLUM™ R HYDRA LD25 IP20 Customer: OSMO Baltic OÜ Location: Peetri, Estonia Photos: BM Light OÜ The company Osmo sells wood and products made of wood, such as strips, staircases, doors and worktops. In addition, it specializes in wood paints, which preserve the natural beauty and strength of wood for a long time. The company was founded in 1878 as a wood and building material business and offers exclusively high quality products. In the lighting design of the new Showrooms in Estonia, it was therefore particularly important to put the products in the right light and emphasize their quality. The product wood is an organic material in warm tones, so it is best to use also a warm or natural light color. Another prerequisite was to have a lighting solution on the ceiling, which offers a general lighting and yet illuminates the exhibition pieces optimally. As a third requirement, a small, elegant luminaire should be selected so that it is more in the background and the showroom is not affected too much. Therefore XOOLUM™ was chosen. This filigree luminaire allows the use of high output tapes and different optics. The lighting characteristics of wallwash and opal are combined in one luminaire - a functional, efficient luminaire that performs several tasks at the same time. 3,000 K were chosen as light color. The natural character of the wood is optimally emphasized. Another advantage of LED lighting: since it does not emit UV radiation, the natural material is protected from fadi. 17. Victoria Place Lighting by Hoare Lea Lighting, London – UK, 2015 Working with Haskoll Architects, Hoare Lea Lighting developed the lighting solution for Victoria Place Shopping Centre, the newly refurbished retail and food and beverage destination in Victoria Train Station, London. The centre now hosts a number of popular retailers including, Holland & Barrett, David Clulow and Next and a selection of restaurants, casual eateries, coffee shops and convenience food stores. The brief presented to Haskoll was to refurbish the shopping centre and food court with the aim of re-launching Victoria Place as a retail and food and beverage location that would attract a greater proportion of the flow of visitors to the station (around 120m each year) and from surrounding areas. Hoare Lea Lighting worked with Haskoll to create a bright environment with a vibrant lighting design for the 9000m2, two-storey space. Ambient lighting is provided by linear recessed and surface mounted luminaires and LED downlights, which create a comfortable visual environment, assisting wayfinding and navigation. An impression of natural light is generated through the large Barrisol ceiling, backlit by an array of Osram LED modules. This creates the illusion of daylight, which encourages visitors to linger, especially in the restaurant areas on the second floor balcony. Feature elements include Optelma’s ‘Conico’ cone-shaped luminaire. This bespoke pendant adds drama, while providing general illumination to the floor of the mall. It incorporates a subtle colour-change element, which discreetly adds interest to the scene. Pardip Kaur, Architect, Haskoll said ‘Haskoll’s concept for the lighting scheme was designed to create a dramatic and uplifting interior that would transform the previously dark and uninviting space. The various lighting solutions work together to create a vibrant environment for both retailers and end-users. The lighting design has successfully reinvigorated the mall and foodcourt areas whilst adding value to the development and refocusing it as a retail destination.’ Source: retaildesignblog, hoarelealighting
  18. Centrum Černý Most, Prague, Czech Republic Centrum Černý Most is a major new retail project in Prague, delivering the developer’s vision of an iconic and luxurious retail destination. The design concept emphasized the use of light, making it a key driver in creating a luxury and indulgent experience for shoppers. Key views and entry points were defined using lighting and structures. These included illumination of the floating canopies, glowing goal posts which frame the vehicle entrance ramps, and an interactive and dynamic LED colour-changing cinema corner, providing a defining statement to the entire site. The existing mall received a comprehensive overhaul and was given an entirely fresh design approach. Large circular features maximise the qualities of height, luxury and airiness within the space. Low glare lighting was designed to supplement this and maintain visual comfort to those navigating through the space. Within the new mall extension, flexible, dynamic twin runs of cold cathode are hidden delicately within carefully designed coves. These change during the day from a cool colour temperature, mimicking daylight, whilst slowly transitioning into a warm and luxurious environment towards dusk. Source: ndylight

    Project Green Light

115 Batman Street, Melbourne, Australia The Base Building solution for 115 Batman Street was designed to meet with the Green Star requirements of the project. The overall building design utilizes an integrated design ideology, taking significant advantage of the available daylight via both the high and extensive glazing. Window screening is used to provide amelioration of direct sunlight where necessary and the lighting control system that manages the lighting throughout the tenancy is linked to photo electric cells to dim the luminaires in relation to the available daylight. Motion sensors are also provided throughout to manage the lighting after hours by activating the lighting in areas of movement. The fitout orientated spaces including the main reception, meeting rooms were designed with large luminous grids of pendants while the staff breakout space was designed to be deliberately different with custom pendants that feature panoramic photo montages of the Royal Botanical Gardens. 20. On October 13, 2016, Boston mayor, Martin J. Walsh unveiled the new LED-based architectural lighting of Boston City Hall. The lighting debut was during this year’s final Beer Garden on the Bricks event, themed “Light Bright Beer Garden.” The city intends the new LED lighting to highlight and enhance the building’s original design and increase public safety. The exterior lighting installation is one among several ongoing initiatives to highlight City Hall and City Hall Plaza and make them more inviting for residents. “I am proud that for the first time in its 48 year history, Boston City Hall is going to shine,” said Mayor Walsh. “This state of the art lighting system will help make City Hall the civic heart of our city by livening up the plaza, while making the area safer and connecting us to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Bringing new light to City Hall is symbolic of a more responsive vision here at City Hall, one that is meant to be engaging, inspiring, and serve as a beacon of the city and our values.” New LED fixtures replaced the original Metal Halide exterior recessed lighting and the existing floodlights that illuminate the building’s lower levels and accentuate the entrances. The new fixtures cover the building in a warm white light, and they can produce a broad range of colors. Such color options can allow the City to light the building to acknowledge a variety of celebratory and public events. The mayor lit the building blue to recognize the police officers injured in East Boston, and as a further demonstration of its light changing capability, the mayor changed the color to pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pink lights at city hall added to pink lighting of numerous buildings and landmarks around the city. The lighting highlights the original three-part design of City Hall. The lower levels house the public spaces of the building. The symbolic spaces including the middle sections hold the offices of the Mayor and the City Council, and the administrative spaces crown the building and house the administrative functions of government. According to the city, the new exterior lighting improves security lighting. The city says that the system allows for the floodlights and associated conduit added to the building over the years to be entirely removed. “By illuminating its iconic and bold form, City Hall’s interaction with Boston’s urban fabric may be reinvigorated,” said David Eisen FAIA, Boston Society of Architects/AIA (BSA) Vice President for Communications. “It’s a decisive step toward transforming one of the most internationally renowned buildings that make up our distinct architectural heritage.” The new fixtures are more energy efficient than the Metal Halide fixtures and the existing Flood Lights that they replace. The LED lighting is expected to save the city about 300,000 kWh of electricity annually compared to the replaced lights. The LED technology has a projected 20-year lifespan compared to the 4-year life of the metal halide lights that the LED system replaces. The City expects additional savings from the cost of maintenance and light replacement. Arcade lights have also been retrofitted with LED lighting to complement the new City Hall lighting. The same controller will be able to operate and coordinate both the arcade lights and the City Hall lights. “It is wonderful that the City is taking this opportunity to recreate its own home place – City Hall – as the keystone and central event in an ongoing pursuit of improved illumination for our city,” said Todd Lee, President of LIGHT Boston. Cloud lamp/speaker combo brings thunder into your living room Richard Clarkson, a multi-disciplinary interior designer, owns a design studio in New York and New Zealand where he experiments with different products, lights, and furniture. One of his most elegant creations is Cloud, an interactive light shaped like a cumulus cloud lamp that simulates a thunderstorm both in light and sound. As described on their website, the Cloud is an interactive lamp and speaker system, designed to mimic a thundercloud. Using motion sensors the cloud detects a users presence and creates a unique lightning and thunder show dictated by their movement. The system features a powerful speaker system from which the user can stream music via any Bluetooth compatible device. Using color-changing lights the cloud is able to adapt to the desired lighting color and brightness. The cloud also has alternative modes such as a nightlight and music reactive mode. This smart creative lamp/cloud is filled with lights, motion sensors, microphones, and a powerful speaker system. A remote control allows users to set it to different modes, getting it to act like a simple thunder cloud, to respond to movements in its surroundings, or to respond to sounds or music that it hears around it. The cloud-like outer layer definitely completes the illusion giving it the the perfect look. It would make for a fun accessory, just don’t expect to read comfortably under its light. Check out this awesome GIF of The Cloud showing off its capabilities. You can check out Clarkson’s page to learn more about the Cloud, or even purchase your own for a few thousand dollars. You’ll also find cheaper versions with less functionality on the site, too.

  23. Illuminated Neopixel Sign With IR Remote Control This an LED sign that you can change the colors or animation displayed by using an IR remote. I cut out the design on my Shapeoko 3 in MDF. If you dont have access to a cnc you could also cut these out on a scroll saw. It would just be more work. I got the inspiration for this from a YouTube video I saw by Michael Curry titled Making an Illuminated Sign with Inventables X-Carve and Adobe Illustrator. When I saw that I thought it was cool but wanted to improve on it by being able to change the colors. I also thought a step by step description would be good.
