I must apologize for what may be a very stupid question, but my searches online have been unsuccessful. I intend to install a number of LED downlights in a rather long hallway (600cm x 180cm) and see downlights that look like a small white panel, and others where the actual LEDs are visible. I am planning to replace my existing lights in my living room with a pair of LED strip lights. I was wondering can a LED light be brighter than a CFL light. My children usually sit in the living room, to do their daily home works, hence I am very concerned about the lighting quality in my living room in particular. I was advised by my friend to buy a LED Strip Light - 5000K Cool White - 72W - 12V DC and have two strips running my living room. As per his suggestion, one strip should be placed at the top of the living room, surrounding the living room on all four sides and the other one at the bottom of the living room, just above the carpets, illuminating all four walls. He told me this would serve the purpose and offer a cool look to the room. I am looking to buy LED strip lights locally to ensure I do not end up buying cheap Chinese scrap. I want my product to be an investment, that will last for a couple of years at least. But before buying a LED strip light from my local light store, I thought, it will be useful, if I take a second opinion. I have not seen LED strip light illuminated living room and do not know, how good will it look. As I mentioned earlier, my goal is to have maximum light in the room, something very close to real light( soft yet clear). I am concerned can it provide the adequate light balance I am looking for.

OMOTESANDO HILLS CHRISTMAS 2017 Omotesando Hills, a shopping complex in central Tokyo, has entered a new stage in its 11th year, with an aspiration to create and transmit "culture". To materialize this vision, Omotesando Hills has collaborated with Emmanuelle to bring fusion of Illumination and "Art" into the mall for the Christmas season. Emmanuelle’s first illumination has become a fantastical space filled with gentle and warm lights created by her 100 colors. The illumination "Christmas Forest in 100 colors" was inspired from the scenery of layers of trees lining up along the main boulevard in Omotesando, in which this scenery was recaptured into the void of the large stairway of Omotesando Hills. 1500 mini trees in 100 different colors filled the whole void in 13.4m high, and the "Forest of Colors" spread overwhelmingly. Each mini tree wrap the light bulb in colored papers, like a lantern, to make 100 colors themselves to emit a soft and gentle light. Inside this colorful forest, the main tree is located at the center of the large stairway with a height of 7m, which is formed by a collection of mini trees that light up in white during the open hours. From each level, different views of the illumination are captured, to encourage visitors to walk up and down the slope naturally to make the most of the main characteristic of this building, the slope. Santa Claus and reindeers that appears inside the main tree are hidden in the forest, add playfulness to the illumination for the visitors to search around. This is why the rooms in a hospital are often green – green calms and reduces stress. Other colours such as red, orange, yellow, blue, etc., have a different effect on the body. Chromotherapy, a.k.a. colour therapy studies these effects. Chromotherapy or colour therapy is based on the premise that colours and light can be used to correct physical ailments. New Report on Tunable Lighting in Classrooms The U.S. Department of Energy's GATEWAY program has released a new report on a trial installation of tunable-white LED lighting systems in three classrooms in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District in Carrollton, TX, which provides valuable insights into the use of this technology in a real-world setting. The LED systems were installed in August 2016 and provide the ability to vary the spectral power distribution (SPD) across four preset conditions associated with nominal CCTs of 3000 K, 3500 K, 4200 K, and 5000 K. The controls also provide for preset scenes to vary the on/off status and dimming level of different luminaire zones within the room, to better support such classroom functions as audiovisual presentations. Among the key takeaways: The reduction in input power for the tunable-white LED lighting system was estimated to be 58% relative to the incumbent fluorescent system, and was attributable to the higher efficacy of the LED luminaires and a reduction in illuminances, which previously exceeded IES-recommended levels. Dimming furthered the energy savings in each classroom. While the teachers’ usage of the controls varied widely as recorded by the monitoring system, in each case the lighting consistently operated with all or some of the luminaires turned off or dimmed for portions of the school day. When the control locations were more easily accessed by the teacher, the dimming level was varied more regularly. The teachers used the scene controls regularly but used the SPD controls infrequently. Color consistency for the tunable-white LED luminaires was very good, even over the dimming range, with only minor variations in CCT and Duv. The two teachers interviewed by DOE appreciated the ability to tailor the lighting to different classroom needs, and felt that the lighting and controls allowed the students to be engaged in choosing the settings for various classroom activities. Abu Dhabi Municipality If you live in Mushrif or the Capital Centre, then you could be among the first to have your old streetlamps replaced with LEDs. Abu Dhabi Municipality last month announced ambitious plans to replace 42,632 older, inefficient lighting fixtures across the island. It is one of the largest projects of its kind in the world. The older lights are mainly high pressure sodium or metal halide. They give off a familiar orange glow, but are also notoriously inefficient. The new LEDs, or luminaires, will be up to 90 per cent more efficient; cost 90 per cent less to maintain; and also will lead to an 80 per cent reduction in harmful CO2 emissions. The quality of light and the fact it is more even will make it better for drivers and pedestrians. “Electricity bills were so high with all the old lights,” said Eiman Alameri, from the municipal infrastructure and assets sector at Abu Dhabi Municipality. “They really consume a lot of energy – and Abu Dhabi wants everything to be more sustainable,” she said. The retrofit is set to start early next year once the tendering process is completed. Work will be undertaken in five phases across the island and each phase is expected to take three months. The island is set to be finished by the middle of 2019. Poles or foundations will not have to be touched and only the lighting fixture will have to be replaced. Newer projects on the island such as on Salam Street and on Yas Island for example already use LEDs and the new fixtures are expected to last for about 12 and a half years compared with two to three years for the older lights. “The project is one of the biggest of its type in the world,” said Martin Valentine, lighting expert at the municipality. Mr Valentine said the Abu Dhabi plan is way ahead of other global retrofits when it comes to the quality of light. “It’s not just about changing to save energy. We’re [also] improving the lighting on the roads. We’re reducing the pollution,” he said. Traditional street lights, known for their yellowish hue, will be relaunched with bright white LED lights across Abu Dhabi. We don’t want to have all the budgets coming from the government,” said Ms Alameri. While it is a public-private partnership, the municipality will retain control of the system. The retrofit includes the addition of a smart control system and it will yield consumption reports; identify failures; and allow lights to be dimmed at certain hours which will lead to even more savings. “These can be dimmed at times when traffic is quiet, after rush hour and between 1am and 5am,” said Mr Valentine. It is thought that there are 290,000 of the older lights still in use across the emirate. When the island retrofit is completed, it is believed that other areas of the emirate will be next. Local authorities around the word have been looking at introducing LEDs to cut costs. In some cities, such as Rome, residents have complained that harsh white light emanating from these new LEDs has distorted the ambience of the city. But for Mr Valentine, crude implementation is to blame. There are nine colour temperature options when it comes to LEDs, and these range from warmer yellow light to a harsh blue light. “You have to look at colour temperature. A historic city centre and a main road are completely different things. We encourage warmer colours for the streets,” said Mr Valentine. “We are not going too cold on the colour temperatures as some cities have and they’ve done that to save money. We banned the cold blue white colours from Abu Dhabi. We’ve got a neutral white colour which is the most efficient warm colour. New LED lights save money on energy and maintenance How many workers, and how long does it take to replace 5,000 street lights? Well, let's put it this way: Last month, White Plains and the New York Power Authority started a $3.6 million project to replace all of old high-pressure sodium lights in the city with new LED bulbs. On any given day, weather-permitting, up to four two-member crews are out on city streets, replacing lights. They expect to finish by July. "It's a big job, but in the long run, it will be worth it," said John DiPilato, supervisor of the Bureau of Street Lighting for the city's Public Works department. "The LED lights are cheaper, more durable and use less electricity. We'll save money both on maintenance and electrical costs." Throughout the region, communities are switching over from old sodium lights to LED bulbs, which, thanks to improvements in technology, provide substantial savings. The lights are guaranteed for 10 years and normally last twice that long. They use 30 to 40 percent less electricity than sodium or fluorescent bulbs and throw off what DiPalato described as a "cleaner light" that seems brighter than conventional bulbs. New Rochelle, Yonkers, Peekskill, Scarsdale, Hastings-on-Hudson and Rye Brook are among the Westchester municipalities who have made, or are making the change. "It's happening all over the state," said David Maya, the NYPA conservation program engineer managing the White Plains replacement program.
