    Similar 12V WS2811 LED Strip

I have been looking for better ceiling lighting. My LED cabinet lights have been great but my overhead lighting I cannot stand. Preferably, I would like an LED Ceiling light with a 24 Key IR Remote that I could use interchangeably with every other light in the room. I have looked at some track lighting but I really dont like the appearance of track lighting. I have seen a few flush mounts with 3 or 4 track light-esque spotlights but if I did that I would want 5 or 6 spotlights at least but havent found any like that. I have also seen some flushmount circular LED lights that have an upper rim of colored LEDs but I am unsure of how well one circular strip of leds would output light in the room. Looking for some ideas/suggestions/experience pros/cons. Pictures would be great as well. One of my pet peeves currently is when I take pictures in my room is the downward light always screwing up my photos and the light is just not bright enough. But it is still like taking pictures looking directly at the Sun. Thats where the track lights came to mind because I could cant/tilt the lights up and out. Hopefully that made some sense. 4. Thorn Lights the Revamped PalaTrento Arena Thorn Lighting has delivered a comprehensive new lighting system for a multipurpose sports arena in the Italian city of Trento. The new Altis Sport LED floodlights provide the perfect conditions for a range of matches and sporting events, helping the Aquila Basket Trento basketball team and Trentino Volley volleyball club enjoy both home advantage and the best possible lighting when they entertain visitors to the PalaTrento arena. London, October 2017 – The local authorities in Trento have marked the start of the new basketball and volleyball seasons by officially opening the renovated PalaTrento municipal arena, the true home of sport in the north Italian city. A series of major works have recently been carried out at the venue, which can accommodate 4360 spectators and will soon be expanded to offer seating for 5000 sports fans. This extensive renovation project has included refurbishment of the flooring, renewal of the seating area and a completely new lighting system. With a clear desire to mirror the high-calibre nature of the sporting performances and guarantee the public an unforgettable visitor experience, plans for the renewal of the lighting focused on designing a modern system that would minimise energy consumption and maximise lighting quality. Thorn was committed to giving the PalaTrento arena the lighting it deserves, combining norm compliance and outstanding efficiency with first-class lighting quality for both competitive matches and regular training. The thorough product selection process finally settled on the Thorn Altis Sport, a high-power LED floodlight for sports lighting applications. Altis Sport provides exceptional flicker-free lighting, which is suitable for HDTV broadcasting, and features a flexible optical system that crafts an optimised lighting distribution, offering players the perfect environment in which to show their sporting excellence. A total of 92 symmetrical and asymmetrical floodlights can achieve lighting levels of up to 3400 lux, while a DMX system enables full individual control of dimming and directional positioning. As a result, visitors to the PalaTrento can now also experience the type of spectacular team presentations normally seen before National Basketball Association (NBA) games in America. The new lighting system comfortably outperforms the large number of conventional discharge lamps that formed the mainstay of the old installation. Indeed, different luminaire sizes and varying lighting intensities meant that the arena was previously unable to guarantee the achievement of the regulatory standards required for high-level international competitions. The extensive experience of Thorn with sporting applications was greatly appreciated by all parties involved in the project. The impressive new lighting system is the result of excellent collaboration between Thorn and team members such as Teknoengineering, a long-term partner of the Zumtobel Group. Source: thornlighting
  5. 8 SIGNS YOU’RE READY TO INVEST IN LED LIGHTING You will likely find ample justification to support the business case for your organization’s transition to LED lighting. In most cases, that justification will be derived from your organization’s experience with its current legacy lighting system. That experience will provide at least eight signs that you are ready for LED lighting. You have lost control over your utility costs. Traditional metal halide or high pressure sodium light fixtures might have been state-of-the-art when they were installed, but they have never been particularly efficient. Much of the power they consume is dissipated as excess heat. As electricity costs have gone up, your organization has spent more and more money that is wasted by these traditional fixtures. More efficient LED lighting will reverse this pattern. Your lighting maintenance team is overworked. Metal halide or high-pressure sodium bulbs need to be replaced, on average, every two years. If the entire lighting system fails, your maintenance team can take an hour or two to bring it back to full power. Broken or damaged fixtures can shut down a complete bank of lighting, interrupting your company’s operations. These problems can all be reduced or eliminated with LED lighting systems. Your company has adopted environmental initiatives. LED lighting places lower loads on electrical power generation plants, thus reducing carbon emissions. LED lamps themselves contain no hazardous materials that might contaminate landfills when they are eventually replaced and discarded. Employee productivity is down. Studies have revealed a close connection between adequate lighting and employee productivity. LED lighting pushes the advantage of good lighting even further. Certain wavelengths of light can improve mood and increase productivity. LED’s can be adjusted to generate light in these wavelength, leading to potential employee productivity improvements. Workplace mishaps are increasing. Many workplace accidents are the result of poor visibility and lighting systems that create shadows and dark spots. Employees experience fatigue and eyestrain in poorly-lit environments, which contributes to more accidents in those environments. LED lighting can be configured to eliminate those dark spots and to generate uniform illumination across an entire workspace. Moreover, LED lighting can be tuned to better replicate natural sunlight, giving employees the best possible lighting to avoid mishaps. Your business is expanding. If you are building new facilities, it makes little sense to install old technology in those facilities. LED designers and engineers can develop a custom LED lighting solution for new construction that optimizes the lighting environment with fixtures and systems that give facilities managers unprecedented control over illumination. Your operations are conducted under extreme conditions. Large temperature swings, different forms of precipitation, heavy machinery, and round-the-clock movement can all put strains on a lighting system. Next-generation LED lighting is engineered to withstand these strains and to continue in full operation regardless of the extremes. You need to power up lighting systems quickly. Traditional lighting can take up to 30 minutes before coming to full illumination. LED lighting eliminates that lag and comes to full illumination almost immediately after being powered up. 10. Lighting Retrofit vs. Lighting Redesign The revolution in industrial and commercial lighting is shepherding in a host of new LED lighting systems that are replacing traditional metal halide and high pressure sodium fixtures. As more organizations look to make this transition, their first question is whether they should retrofit existing lighting systems to utilize LED fixtures and control systems, or move entirely to a new redesign of their entire lighting configuration. As with many other facilities-related issues, this decision will be a function of personal preferences, the facility itself, and budgetary considerations. LED Lighting Retrofit If you are working with a limited budget and the facility does not have unique lighting needs, a retrofit may be adequate. Existing lamps can simply be replaced with LED lamps and self-contained drivers. The end result will be equivalent or better illumination with an immediate reduction in utility costs, but maintenance costs will likely be higher than with a full or partial redesign. LED lamps can be more directional than traditional bulbs, and replacing existing lamps will not solve light distribution issues or elimination of any shadows that an existing design had created. LED Lighting Redesign The next step up from just replacing lamps is changing all of the existing fixtures with LED-specific luminaires. New LED lamps and fixtures will likely generate greater illumination than prior-generation lamps, and this option might produce an environment that is overlit. Moreover, replacing the fixtures will not readily facilitate the addition of advanced controls for the LED lights, such as dimming and custom adjustments of individual fixtures. LED Lighting Retrofit vs. LED Lighting Redesign A complete lighting system redesign will impose the highest upfront cost on an organization, but that cost can be more quickly recovered through utility and maintenance cost savings with a redesign than with a simpler retrofit. Design engineers will analyze the space that need to be illuminated and will sketch out a customized plan that includes a blend of different LED fixtures to achieve optimum lighting in the facility. LED’s are available in a variety of light dispersion patterns that can be mixed and matched to uniformly light a facility with a minimum of dark spots and shadows. The engineer can also incorporate advanced control systems into a new LED lighting design that allows a facilities operator to selectively dim or adjust individual fixtures to alter facility lighting to coincide with particular or changing uses of the facility. LED lighting technology has advanced rapidly over the past ten years. Decisions about retrofitting or redesigning a lighting system should be based on the most current available information. Manufacturers and designers of LED lighting systems have also gained considerable experience in that time with helping their clients to make the best lighting choices that fit their needs and that do not go over budget. That experience extends to adapting specific color temperature and color rendering indices (CRI) into new lighting systems that can improve employee morale and performance with lighting that better matches natural sunlight throughout the day. 12. In Stockholm, AF Lighting has designed a media facade that reflects the weather, and helps build the brand of a major insurance company. The head office of Swedish insurance company If sits directly above a busy motorway just north of Stockholm. It has always been an imposing building – but rather an anonymous one, with an unlit facade. ÅF Lighting was asked to do something about that. The resulting solution is characterized by a soft, welcoming light, which matches the recently updated visual guidelines of the insurance company, and its concept of being “close to the people”. For many years, the one distinguishing feature of the building was an old digital clock sitting on top of it, which also displays outside temperature, as a service to passers-by. ÅF Lighting kept this in mind when creating the lighting concept, which involves LED strips being fitted to the entire facade, with a dynamic light flowing through them like changes in the weather. The lighting scheme also reflects actual local weather conditions, enabling the public to experience the façade lit according to natural conditions such as wind, snow, rain, sun and clouds as well as the seasonal changes. The work also included to update the old clock with a new design and new media logo. Apart from conveying a message about the weather, the lighting also gives the building a lighter, more dynamic feel, and provides an aesthetic experience for car-borne commuters on an otherwise eventless motorway. ”The project has presented challenges to which we have found innovative solutions”, says lighting designer Francesco Guastella. ”As part of the creative process, we worked closely with the customer to develop mood boards, inspired by their brand message about closeness to people. Eventually we decided that nature and its changes is something that everybody can relate to. Who has not gazed into the flames of an open fire, for instance, or at the waves lapping at a shore? This is what inspired us when creating the lighting programme that now flows along the facade.” Installing the light rods proved to be the most challenging part of the project. As the façade faces a motorway, building cranes could not reach to all the necessary installation areas. Instead, climbers were hired to perform the work. ”It looked absolutely terrifying, but the results are extraordinary”, says an evidently pleased Francesco Guastella. Now commuters are met by a beautiful façade each day, reflecting the weather in that particular moment. In other words, the lighting helps communicate the If brand, and adds value to people in their everyday lives. Source: af-lighting
  13. NORWEGIAN NIGHTS Dockside dining, dim sum and DJs are all on the menu at Hakkasan’s new Nordic venture. Housed in a quirky building with plenty of daylight, it took careful collaboration with the interior designer to make their concept a reality. The result? A lighting scheme that enhances the Ling Ling experience of “evolving” nights. In the dining area, simple long drop pendants hang over tables for intimacy, and a preserved tree is brought to life by a backlit coffer that creates dappled shadows through the leaves. For the flora outside, integrated illumination in the planting and pergolas offers a natural extension to the interior dining space. Back inside, the galvanised metal conduit installation is an eye-catcher. Punctuated with light it forms a framework effect throughout: from balustrade, to trellis and a radiating feature above the bar and dining area. The conduit’s illuminated sections pick up on the timber cladding, which houses concealed LEDs that wrap around the building’s perimeter to give the space a diffuse, ambient feel. And, the bar’s backdrop incorporates random lines of light to draw people in for a carefully-crafted cocktail. In the music and DJ area light levels were kept purposely low for a moodier effect, and cluster pendants added for accent. Transition spaces were also considered – they’re easily identified by the brand’s vibrant colour scheme that’s been integrated into cove lighting. A lighting control system follows the astronomical clock but because of the location, and the long summer nights, it can be easily overridden, giving the team the flexibility needed. 15. Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a craft brewery based in Paso Robles, California. The brewery has experienced significant success, gaining recognition with a number of international awards for its beers. And it now operates three facilities – the others located in Buellton and Venice. In fact the brewery’s growth has required the addition of a new 10,000 sq. ft. brew house at its Paso Robles headquarters in order to meet the steep increase in demand for its products. Harris Architecture was mandated to design the new space with the goal of increasing production capacity. As well as being a fully functional brewery, the Paso Robles location also offers tours to visitors, and after an 8-month construction period, the new addition was opened to the public in May, 2017. “The whole space has a turn of the century iron works style,” said Kyle Harris, who led the project for Harris Architecture. “There is a lot of galvanized metal and exposed bolts combined with tiling and concrete floors. It’s retro with a tech edge.” The team from Harris worked closely with the Firestone Walker founders to ensure that every element of the new space was on point from a design and usability perspective. Everyone involved in the project was very conscious of choosing the right pieces to present the facility as the iconic, signature location in the Firestone Walker family of facilities. Lighting the space was an important piece of the design. The lighting had to be functional as well as fitting aesthetically with the design intent of the space. In collaboration with Prudential Lighting Products, the Harris team identified Luminis products as the perfect solution. Luminis’ Torx and Aramis products were chosen. Twelve Torx TR2450 pendants were selected to illuminate the brew deck. The Torx TR2450 products are decorative and functional ceiling pendants with a frosted acrylic refractor and an LED light source. Delivering more than 12,000 lumens per product, the pendants are ideal for areas where efficiency, reliability and aesthetics are important. To carry the aesthetic throughout the facility, two more Torx TR2450 pendants have been included in the visitor center. Four Aramis AR148 pendants were used for additional illumination, while thirteen wall-mounted Aramis AR148 luminaires are positioned around the perimeter of the room. Most of the Aramis AR148 wall mounted sconces are in pairs – one as an uplight, and one as a downlight in each pair – providing a striking accent. The 6” cylindrical luminaires have an LED light source and deliver 2,050 lumens. “Functionality and performance were key requirements in the lighting product selection,” said Harris. “The Torx and Aramis products from Luminis not only delivered on those requirements but also perfectly fit the industrial aesthetic in the rest of the building.” Outside of the building, Harris chose Luminis’ Syrios SY602 products, complete with LED light source and unique integral tilting mechanism for precise directional aiming. Used primarily to illuminate the Firestone Walker signage and accent the curved roof, the products really catch the eye. Finally, Eclipse Mini EC612 products illuminate the exterior of the main entrance providing the complete lighting experience from outside to inside – a testament to the wide array of interior and exterior products offered by Luminis. The Eclipse Mini EC612 models, durable and designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, are mounted to the wall either side of the front door and on the columns supporting the covered entry. All of the interior lighting is on a dimming channel, enabling adjustment depending on the time of day. During the night, brew house lighting is turned up to deliver 100 foot candles of light at floor level to assist with nightly cleaning. In the daytime, the lighting is scaled back to deliver 45-55 foot candles at floor level for standard use. “We did extensive calculations and modelling to make sure the lighting would be at the right level, and that we got the light in the places it was needed,” said Harris. “Inside the brew house the lighting hits the metal and the stainless steel brew tanks, and the results are striking.” The reaction of the client has also been positive. Firestone Walker Co-Founder David Walker said: “The lighting is industrial, beautiful and functional; not an easy combination to achieve when lighting a modern brew house – it is elegantly done.” Source: luminis

  19. 1000-Watt LED Floodlight Provides Fantastic Nighttime Video Effects Along with drone technology and the advancement of user-modified drones, another thing that has also been evolving is LED technology and the way people use it. In this four-minute video, you will see a good example of the combination of these two technologies, as Stratus Productions mounted a 1000-watt LED light to a Freefly Systems Alta 8 drone. The story of building the 1000-watt LED bar started last year, and in this video, it is attached to a drone for its first flight. As it's told in the video, with some battery modification, both the drone and the LED bar can run for about ten minutes. Taking the required power into consideration, ten minutes of running time sounds miraculous. In addition to lighting aerial videos at night, this experimental system (or builds similar to this system) can also be used for a variety of other purposes, from lighting subjects at any time of the day when shooting from the ground to aiding in search and rescue activities. If you have any LED-based custom-modification experience with drones, please share it with us in the comments below. For some gorgeous sample footage shot with this rig, skip straight to the two-minute mark in the video.
  20. Illuminating The Color Rendering Index Color is one of the most fundamental perceptions of the human experience and flavors the world around us. Of course, our perception of color is completely dependent on light, which reflects off of physical surfaces and carries information about its color and texture to our eyes. But it’s not just the physical world that determines the colors we perceive. Light itself exists in a spectrum of observable color variants that shade and paint the world we see around us every day. Much thought has been put into understanding the psychology of color and how we might use the many colors of light to creatively manipulate our world. One of the best measurements we can take to facilitate this creative control is a Color Rendering Index or CRI. Source: specgradeled
  21. LED LIGHTING MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP When commercial and industrial LED lighting systems were first introduced, some proponents of those systems claimed that they were maintenance-free with lifespan expectations in excess of 50,000 hours. LED systems do have fewer maintenance obligations than the metal halide and high-pressure sodium systems that they are replacing, but even minor maintenance will extend the life of an LED system and improve the economics of an organization’s decision to transition to LED’s. In addition, a handful of companies have crafted LED lights with advanced thermal management that reduces their degradation due to heat buildup, and simpler LED designs that allow for repair and replacement of LED lamps and fixtures with few or no tools. LED Lighting Maintenance LED lamps generate light through solid state electronics that are controlled by embedded drivers in the lamps and fixtures themselves. The actual components that generate light are less likely to degrade than the drivers, which can experience performance degradation due to heat buildup and thermal overload. A few of the pioneering manufacturers of LED lighting systems, including SpecGrade LED, have designed patented thermal management systems that more effectively remove heat from the lamps and fixtures. Heat transfer will be improved if the lamps and fixtures are kept free from dust and debris, and occasional cleaning of LED fixtures can lead to longer performance. LED maintenance costs are typically divided between components and labor. Component costs will generally not vary, but labor costs can increase dramatically if a lighting system is complex and more time is required to access and repair fixtures, or if those repairs need to be done at off times when a facility’s regular operations have subsided. Next-generation LED fixtures and systems incorporate designs that facilitate quicker and easier repairs that can be completed with few or no tools. Modular LED systems also allow repairs and replacements of single fixtures without affecting other fixtures in a lighting array. As LED control systems become more advanced, manufacturers will likely include features such as remote wireless control and monitoring. A facilities manager can then coordinate and control lighting in several locations from a single wireless internet-connected device. Organizations that are considering an LED retrofit or an installation of an LED system into a new facility should plan for updates and upgrades to those systems that wireless control and other future innovations. Adopting a more flexible LED system now will make upgrades simpler and less expensive in the future. Organizations can plan for regular periodic maintenance of an LED system, or they can adopt a more reactive program that calls for maintenance as a response to performance issues. If, for example, a facility’s electrical utility costs begin to increase, or employees note that LED illumination is decreasing, the organization can then implement maintenance procedures in response to those observations. In all cases, LED maintenance and upkeep obligations add to overhead costs that every organization seeks to control. Those costs are already lower for LED lighting systems, but they can be reduced even further if an organization selects an LED system that includes advanced thermal management systems and that makes repairs and replacements as simple as is possible. 22. Voyage The etymon of the word 'voyage' comes from Latin 'viāticum', which means 'provision for travelling', and the aim of the artwork is to allow viewers to travel and sail with absolute freedom to all the places they care to imagine. Colourful paper boats on the water invites everyone to make a transition from reality to imagination, reliving childhood memories and embracing our freedom; blurring the lines between the real and hyper-real, Voyage invites the thoughts of the visitors to cross the borders of their imagination. Voyage is a large-scale installation that consists of three hundred floating 'origami boats', encasing coloured dynamic LED lights that come alive at night. Each origami boat is 60cm long. Voyage is also designed to be an interactive experience; people can engage with it and impact on the behaviour of the lights from their mobile phone. 23. Flower Strip Every spring, the Netherlands bursts into vivid colors as bulbs shoot and thousands of flowers blossom. The Dutch landscape is complemented by beautiful stripes of color. Visitors from all over the world travel to The Netherlands to be able to experience rows of flowers stretching to the horizon. Flower Strip from Aether & Hemera gives you the possibility to enjoy the same aesthetic of flowering bulbs in the winter months. The artwork gives the phenomenon a new context by using light and placing the flowers into the water of the Amsterdam Canal. Commissioned by the Amsterdam Light Festival, from November 2016 to 22 January 2017 Wertheimpark, Amsterdam. Source: aether-hemera
  24. Patients in intensive care feel better with light adapted to the time of day New research shows that the light environment in intensive care affects how patients feel - even a year after completed hospitalization. With light adapted to the time of day, health even improves for patients who are barely conscious when they are admitted for care. “It is really important with a normal circadian rhythm and light is the environmental factor that has the greatest affect,” says Marie Engwall, doctoral student in Health and Care Sciences at the Sahlgrenska Academy and assistant lecturer at University of Borås, with a background as an ambulance nurse anesthetist. Here research is about severely ill or injured patients who are admitted for intensive care, initially often an anesthetized state and in a hospital environment where investigations and treatments must be able to operate around the clock. Many patients are confused and lost with regards to what day it is, and this is where light comes in. In order to counterbalance the traditional ICU department with low levels of daylight and nights when lighting is frequently turned on, and experimental environment with so-called cyclical lighting that changed during the day into fourteen different light scenarios. Calming function Mornings began with a weak, reddish dawn light, which, at around 8 am turned to a strong, blue light similar to daylight. In the middle of the day, the strength of the light was reduced slightly so that patients would also be able to experience existing daylight to subsequently be increased again in the afternoon. Towards the evening, the light became weaker and warmer again. At that time, the light sources were also placed at a lower height; in the evening only a weak and warm light was emitted from the skirting boards. All this to resemble natural light throughout the day. “The patients were very satisfied with the lighting environment. It had a calming function and helped in supporting the circadian rhythm, Earlier research shows that it is very important with a stable circadian rhythm for hormonal levels and other physiological function in the body,” says Marie Engwall. The survey that was conducted 6 months after discharge did not provide any clear picture of the recovery of the patients. Marie Engvall describes this time as a fragile period for many of them. However, after another 6 months there was a different tune when the same on hundred patients were once again asked about the physical and mental health, appetite and sleep. Significantly better “Patients cared for in our experimental room demonstrated significantly better self-rated recovery after twelve months compared to patients in the control group. I do no claim that everything is a result of the light, but there is an indication and a clear finding here that we can continue working with,” says Marie Engwall. Her research focuses on the patient but even the impressions of healthy visitors evaluated in a questionnaire gave positive results. Staff were not consulted in the studies in question, but nevertheless, Marie Engwall has received some response during the course of the process. “They really like the light that provides good working light during the day. At night time, the levels are lower than what they are used to in order for patients to be able to sleep better,” she says. Link to the thesis
