"Arrangements": The New Contemporary Lighting Design Series for Flos Michael Anastassiades presented Flos newest contemporary lighting design series: Arrangements. The designer explained that the series is, at its essence, “a modular system of geometric light elements that could be combined in different ways, creating multiple compositions as individual chandeliers“. “Each unit simply attaches onto the previous one as if resting, balancing perfectly as part of a glowing chain“, explained the designer. These almost architectural pieces can be carefully twisted and warped, creating an unusual intersection of fields: lighting and jewelry design. “I have always been fascinated with the parallel that exists between lighting and jewelry. starting from the simple fact of how each piece relates to the human scale: one is designed to be worn on the body whereas the other is made to decorate the space someone occupies”, said Anastassiades. The designer also mentioned that he’s “challenged by how the delicate nature of something small can be translated spatially and still manage to retain its preciousness in the way materials are presented. It is no coincidence that the word ‘pendant’ has a double meaning. existing both as a piece of jewelry that hangs from a chain worn round the neck, and a light designed to hang from the ceiling.” Source: designboom
  2. New research reveals outdoor lighting makes homes more attractive to buyers LED lighting perfect for any outdoor space Around half (49%) of Europeans are more likely to purchase a home that has outdoor lighting, either at the front of the house or in the garden 76% of Spaniards are more likely to purchase a home which has outdoor lighting, versus only 36% of Britons Across Europe, 71% agree outdoor garden lighting adds to the overall atmosphere of a home. Eindhoven, The Netherlands – Philips Lighting (Euronext Amsterdam ticker: LIGHT), a global leader in lighting, has today released findings that reveal the impact outdoor lighting has on ‘curb-appeal’ or the desirability of a home. Outdoor lighting is a key consideration when buying a home for nearly half of Europeans (45%) – beating the type of windows, roof or paintwork of a house, as a consideration. While one third of all Europeans agree that outdoor lighting has a significant impact on the appeal of a home. Source: newsroom.lighting.philips

  4. Shining jewel in the port of Hamburg: Zumtobel develops artistic lighting solution for the Elbphilharmonie 2800 special luminaires - including 1200 hand-blown glass ball luminaires Zumtobel, a brand of the Zumtobel Group, has realised a series of lighting solutions within the building that has already become Hamburg’s new landmark. For this project, the manufacturer of high-quality luminaires developed numerous special luminaires, partly consisting of hand-made elements. The customised lighting solution for general illumination in the concert hall is particularly impressive. Zumtobel has referenced the architectural philosophy of combining old and new by working closely with Herzog & de Meuron, lighting design firm Ulrike Brandi Licht and the glass designer Detlef Tanz from Wegberg to carefully craft 1200 hand-blown glass ball luminaires. Paying homage to the nearby River Elbe, the fittings appear like light-filled water bubbles emerging from the undulating acoustic ceiling, in which the luminaire housings are discretely concealed from view. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern LED technology made the development of this lighting solution a special challenge for Zumtobel. Source: zumtobelgroup

  6. Plexineon provides glow inside new Blue Moon Brewing Company restaurant In 1995, Denver-based Blue Moon Brewing Company got its start in the basement of Coors Field. More than 20 years later, the brand is a subsidiary of MillerCoors, but in a nod to its local, craft brewer roots, Blue Moon has opened its own brewery and restaurant in Denver’s River North neighborhood. From a functional standpoint, the 30,000-square-foot standalone structure now provides what the space in the ballpark could not — dining and event space that also serves as a laboratory for research and development. Aesthetically speaking, the design team literally looked to the moon for inspiration — conceiving large-scale circular elements to help fill the wide-open interior space. The result are two 16-foot circles and 12 6-foot diameter rings made out of iLight Plexineon LED fixtures. Suspended from the high ceilings, they create warm haloes of light. “At night it definitely reminds me of a neon light. When people see it, they’re pretty taken aback. They ask what it is. The client loves the space.” – Adam Harding, Partner, Roth Sheppard Architects, LLP Source: ilight-tech

  8. New Echelon Connected Lighting Solution Delivers Healthier LED Streetlighting Without Compromising Safety and Visibility Cities and Enterprises Can Dynamically Regulate the Level of Blue Light Outdoors Internet of Things pioneer Echelon Corporation is currently conducting what is believed to be the first successful deployment of so-called “white tunable” connected streetlighting with the municipal leaders of White Bear Lake, a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota and design firm Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. The new Lumewave by Echelon® solution can dynamically regulate the amount of potentially unhealthy blue light emitted from outdoor lighting. With this ground-breaking innovation, city managers can adjust streetlight color from soothing warm yellow to bright blue-white based on activity levels, time of day, weather and events. Dimming levels can also be remotely adjusted, making the system ideal to aid visibility for first responders, security professionals and more. “Being the first to try this new technology and see it in action was very rewarding,” said Mark Burch, Public Works Director/City Engineer, White Bear Lake. “We could raise the brightness and select a more vivid hue during an evening event. With a scheduled scenario, we could shift the lights in that same area to a warmer hue at 2:00am when there are rarely park visitors, other than our nocturnal wildlife. We could also program sensors along with the lights to automatically respond to higher foot traffic or certain weather conditions for optimal visibility. The new technology could give us the power to elevate the level of public safety and quality of life across our entire community.” This next-generation, connected LED lighting control technology enables municipalities to realize the full scope of LED streetlighting benefits, from improved public safety and reduced energy consumption and reduced maintenance and costs, to better health, quality of life and environmental comfort. White Bear Lake’s successful implementation of Echelon’s new technology is an example of the company’s commitment to foster safer and more comfortable cities through IoT-enabled connected lighting. “Municipalities now have the power to create the perfect environment at any given time,” said Ron Sege, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Echelon. “Imagine the improved public safety if all of the streetlights in an area were immediately whiter and brighter when a 911 call was responded to, but otherwise dimmer and more yellow at night for restful sleep. Cities need not compromise safety for comfort or vice versa. Our technology is paving the way for smart cities to improve quality of life, while still achieving energy efficiency and sustainability goals.” Source: news.echelon

  17. New LED lights save money on energy and maintenance How many workers, and how long does it take to replace 5,000 street lights? Well, let's put it this way: Last month, White Plains and the New York Power Authority started a $3.6 million project to replace all of old high-pressure sodium lights in the city with new LED bulbs. On any given day, weather-permitting, up to four two-member crews are out on city streets, replacing lights. They expect to finish by July. "It's a big job, but in the long run, it will be worth it," said John DiPilato, supervisor of the Bureau of Street Lighting for the city's Public Works department. "The LED lights are cheaper, more durable and use less electricity. We'll save money both on maintenance and electrical costs." Throughout the region, communities are switching over from old sodium lights to LED bulbs, which, thanks to improvements in technology, provide substantial savings. The lights are guaranteed for 10 years and normally last twice that long. They use 30 to 40 percent less electricity than sodium or fluorescent bulbs and throw off what DiPalato described as a "cleaner light" that seems brighter than conventional bulbs. New Rochelle, Yonkers, Peekskill, Scarsdale, Hastings-on-Hudson and Rye Brook are among the Westchester municipalities who have made, or are making the change. "It's happening all over the state," said David Maya, the NYPA conservation program engineer managing the White Plains replacement program. Rye Brook spent $261,500 to replace about 645 street lights last year, in a project that took about four months. They expect to save $48,246 a year on the LED lights. Source: lohud
  18. How LED Lighting Improves Mood and Health Most people have an innate understanding of how lighting can affect the overall mood of an environment. They install dimmer switches in dining rooms and other parts of their homes to set a warmer feel when lights are low. In the dark days of winter in northern climates, therapists will even recommend special full-spectrum lighting that mimics sunlight to help alleviate symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Modern LED lighting systems are now taking this relationship between light and mood to its next level. SpecGrade lighting engineers are experimenting daily with uses of LED lighting that directly improve mood and physical health with advanced optics and color temperature variance. Source: specgradeled
  19. LED Natatorium Lighting Natatoriums present some of the most unique lighting challenges of any indoor sports arena. Water surfaces reflect and refract light, making it difficult for observers and referees to watch competitive swimming events. Pool chemicals and humidity can corrode metal surfaces on light fixtures in a relatively short amount of time. Lifeguards need good lighting to maintain safety in public swimming facilities. Natatorium operators strive to keep their facilities open in the face of budget cutbacks. These challenges have come to a head and have been answered by LED natatorium lighting, including fixtures and systems produced by SpecGrade LED. Source: specgradeled
  20. Illuminating The Color Rendering Index Color is one of the most fundamental perceptions of the human experience and flavors the world around us. Of course, our perception of color is completely dependent on light, which reflects off of physical surfaces and carries information about its color and texture to our eyes. But it’s not just the physical world that determines the colors we perceive. Light itself exists in a spectrum of observable color variants that shade and paint the world we see around us every day. Much thought has been put into understanding the psychology of color and how we might use the many colors of light to creatively manipulate our world. One of the best measurements we can take to facilitate this creative control is a Color Rendering Index or CRI. Source: specgradeled
  21. The Health Benefits of LED Lighting Unlike conventional incandescent or fluorescent light sources, LEDs emit light at very specific wavelengths. Physiologists and psychologists have long understood how light can affect a person’s natural circadian rhythms. Consider, for example, the growing number of diagnoses of “seasonal affective disorder” that affects individuals in northern climates who have very limited sunlight disclosure during winter months. LED lights are now seen as a potential remedy for individuals whose circadian body clocks have been interrupted by environmental or other conditions. Source: specgradeled
  22. LED Office Lighting Improves Employee Productivity and Happiness Most people are at least intuitively aware that bad lighting and poorly-lit spaces will adversely affect a person’s mood and productivity. Recognizing this, for many years offices and other workplaces have attempted to use a combination of natural, fluorescent, and incandescent lighting to give their employees brightly-lit environments that, at best, have a neutral effect on productivity. Employers can now transition from neutrality toward improving and enhancing employee productivity and happiness with LED lighting that projects specific colors, temperatures, and wavelengths of light. Source: specgradeled
  23. How Light Affects our Heart and Health In addition to illuminating our world, light affects our health and the advances in LED technology are promising for public health. Scientists have long recognized that human metabolism moves through cycles that are synchronized with natural 24-hour “circadian rhythms.” Anything that interrupts those rhythms, including exposure to extended periods of bright light or absences of light, can affect a person’s health and psychological condition. For example, people who live in far northern or southern climates and who have little exposure to sunlight during winter months can suffer from “seasonal affective disorder”, which is a form of clinical depression. Recognizing this, lighting designers and engineers are now paying greater attention to how their products affect the health of individuals who are exposed to those lights. Source: specgradeled
  24. Human Centric Lighting The circadian rhythm is our biological clock, which in turn is synchronised by the day-night cycle and the change between light and dark. It not only promotes restful sleep at night, but is also responsible for performance levels and physical wellbeing during the day. VS LED systems actively support this biorhythm with chip-on-board modules (COB) that differ from conventional light sources by providing a dynamically adjustable light spectrum that specifically affects the human organism. The module can alternate between the following two light modes: • Biodynamic lighting with adjustable colour temperatures that facilitates the suppression of melatonin. • Lighting that does not influence the release of melatonin, with adjustable colour temperatures. BIODYNAMIC LED LIGHTING Light influences both physical and emotional wellbeing Humans are diurnal beings whose performance levels are deter-mined by the natural daynight cycle, in which regard daylight plays a decisive role in regulating bodily functions. Special retinal ganglion cells serve as receptors for nonvisual light stimuli that influence health and wellbeing. Source: vossloh-schwabe
  25. Human Centric Lighting for a healthy future Human Centric Lighting simulate daylight over the entire day - from clear, blue morning skies, right through to the glow of sunset. They achieve this by gradually changing the spectral qualities and the colour temperature as the day progresses. This helps to improve concentration and increase productivity, for instance. Scientific studies have shown that biorhythmic lighting can reduce error rates in schools by 30 % and at the same time increase pupils’ speed of performance by 30 %. Similar results have been obtained in working environments, where productivity rose by almost 20 % and staff motivation improved significantly. In nursing homes and hospitals, the new illumination systems not only encouraged more activity during the daytime, they also had a positive effect on health and clearly improved night-time sleep patterns.
