Hastings Bridge Spanning the Mississippi River and glowing thanks to Plexineon linear LED fixtures, the Hastings Bridge is longest free-standing tied-arch bridge in North America. Plexineon outlines the shape of the bridge, while illuminating the cables connecting the arch to the deck. Lighting an Award-winning Bridge Plexineon Illuminates a Historic River Town’s Newest Icon Founded in 1857 and located at the junction of the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers, the town of Hastings, Minnesota, takes pride in its rich, historical past — and its bridges. From 1895 to 1951, a unique Spiral Bridge spanned the Mississippi and looped through Hastings’ small downtown. That structure was replaced in 1951 by the Hastings High Bridge, a continuous steel through truss structure that served as the town’s icon for the next 50-plus years. But after the 2007 collapse of the I-35 bridge 30 miles upstream in St. Paul, the Minnesota Legislature passed funding to accelerate repair and/or replacement of fracture critical bridges. The Hastings High Bridge was advanced from a construction date of 2015 to a construction date of 2010. The result is a new signature bridge — a $120 million structure designed by Parsons Transportation, with bridge architecture by Touchstone Architecture and Consulting. The longest free-standing tied-arch bridge in North America, it has a main span composed of arches, girders, beams, stringers, and roadway comprising four lanes of traffic plus a mixed-use pedestrian and bike path. At night, it is illuminated by iLight Plexineon White 1X fixtures that are in step with the quiet beauty of the environment and the soul of a community with small-town charm. The Design Challenge That desire to complement, not detract from, the natural setting was expressed by community stakeholders during the design approval process. “Residents have a strong emotional connection to the bridge,” says Ken Douglas, Principal and Founder, Illumination Arts LLC. “When it came to the lighting, they wanted to highlight the bridge, but without a lot of glitz and glamour.” “Plexineon creates a line of light that’s pleasing to look at from multiple viewpoints.” – Elizabeth Johnson, Senior Designer, Illumination Arts LLC The firm had used Plexineon before, but never for a bridge project. “This was a great opportunity to use the product,” Douglas says. Working in close collaboration with Touchstone, the Illumination Arts team proposed tracing the bridge’s arches with Plexineon — a way to subtly accentuate the shape of the bridge against the night sky, while creating a soft reflection in the river. The lighting also illuminates the thin cables that connect the arches to the deck. The Plexineon Advantage After winning community approval of the design, the firm worked with iLight Technologies to ensure smooth execution. Elizabeth Johnson, Senior Designer at Illumination Arts, says the entire process was “well coordinated, especially on the shop drawings. I think the planning and details really paid off.” A Minnesota native, Johnson made a point to see the finished result herself when she returned home weeks after the bridge opened in 2013. “I was really pleased with how the installation detail looked up close from the pedestrian path,” she says. “Plexineon creates a line of light that’s pleasing to look at from multiple viewpoints — whether you’re walking over the bridge or seeing it from the riverbank.” The new bridge has already become a new source of civic pride in Hastings. It also has quickly garnered awards, including being named the 2014 Midwest Best Project of the Year in the Highways/Bridges category by Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine. The building which spans 21 floors will offer a new standard in Tel Aviv and amazing sea views. Behind the urban, neat façade, lie 41 luxurious apartments and 7 spacious lofts; all with spectacular views of the Mediterranean through floor to ceiling windows, and beautiful sea view balconies. Both the apartments (200 sqm each) and the lofts (189 sqm each) are designed as “smart homes”, equipped with high end technical systems. The building is designed by world-renowned architect Ranni Ziss who has experience in constructing luxury apartments, hotels, and other landmark projects in Israel and beyond. He has created a building which reflects the character of the White City and which is recognised by UNESCO because of its large number of Bauhaus style elements. At the same time it incorporates elements from the best modern luxury apartment buildings from around the world. It is an exclusive project built to a high standard, containing loft apartments, exclusive apartments, spacious penthouses, a swimming pool, a gym and a spa. Also the illumination reflects the high standards. To emphasize the style of the building and create interesting highlights, different linear LED lighting solutions were used. It was also effectively illuminated with a light band from LED Linear. The stop is a good example of the changing needs of people in urban areas. Life during the night becomes more important and people want to be safely guided through the night. The illumination in the roof, for which the opal encapsulated VarioLED™ Flex PHOBOS was chosen, makes this possible and the area is lit homogeneously and appealing. Even more: through the interplay of light and artfully decorated glass the stop becomes a nightly highlight. But the vertical lines of light are also attractive from a decorative point of view and set attractive accents. The path is now designed inviting and safe for pedestrians and cyclists. Also the control meets the needs of the users, because the lights are divided into groups and can therefore be switched on and off or dimmed groupwise. The building is a former automobile garage, which was enlightened by fluorescent light until a few months ago. During the renovation, the building has been totally transformed into an organic shop. The used lighting solutions are from LED Linear™ and LTS. The central area is illuminated by LTS technical luminaire STRAITLINE. The narrow luminaire XOOLUM™ by LED Linear™ illuminates the areas of bakery, butcher, fruit and vegetables in the shop. The round, decorative PLL28 from LTS was used in the area of the cash registers. Our architect partner SBAI has worked hard to gain optimum quality of light and chose our products for their low consumption, their technologies and their lifeti. First Night First Day Boston is a recurring event that counts down to the New Year. To wrap up 2016 and make way for 2017, SGM’s G-Spots and G-1 Beams were chosen to illuminate the spectacle. They lit up the night while adding to the excitement of downtown Boston. The event took place in Copley Square featuring live performances, ice sculptures and fireworks. We spoke with Kyle Stetson of Port Lighting Systems who was the lighting designer for this event. He explained what role, the G-Spot has played for the company: “Port Lighting Systems was one of the first production companies in the Northeast to purchase an inventory of the G-Spot fixtures. It is a workhorse fixture for many of the outdoor events we are involved in.” It was important to him to find a fixture that would give him the look he wanted, but could also stand up to the wintery conditions found in New England. We asked him what was important to him to make this event a success: “When designing the show, we needed fixtures that could not only stand up to the New England winter weather (they saw rain, wind and snow for this event), but also compete in lumen output to other larger fixtures that were protected in scaffolding towers around the square.” The G-Spots were the sole light source for lighting the Trinity Church, backdrop and main performance center. He explained that space was a concern when setting up for this event. In order for the audience to have the best view possible, Kyle needed to find a way to integrate lighting without obstructing viewing areas: “The client wanted Trinity Church lit in pattern and color, with the ability to change throughout the night. An additional scaffolding structure was not possible as our only available fixture locations (next to Front of House) would block the view of the main stage from the rest of the Square. The G-Spots were a great choice for this location because we were able to keep them out in the elements on two small risers, allowing the building to be lit and the audience to see the main stage.” The G-1 Beams lined the rooftop of a hotel in the vicinity overlooking the green. Also exposed to the elements, Kyle needed fixtures that he could rely on. With SGM’s IP65- and IP66-ratings, these hassle-free fixtures require no weatherproof domes and almost no maintenance. Kyle elaborated: “The client also wanted beam effects in the air on the roof of the Fairmont Copley Plaza, a prominent feature of Copley Square. Waterproof domes were used for a number of beam fixtures in this location, but the budget did not allow domes for all fixtures, and a scaffolding structure was not an option due to the location and load in logistics. The G-1 Beams, supplied by Main Light Industries, were a perfect solution for this problem. They allowed us to line the edge of the roof with beam fixtures and kept the budget intact by eliminating the need for waterproof domes.” Kyle summarized on his experience working with the G-Spots for this installation: “We chose the SGM fixtures for both of these locations for their LED source, amazingly bright output and outdoor rating. My technicians appreciated having these fixtures on site because they did not have the standard issues of fixtures in a damp environment or lamp striking in the cold.” Applied products: G-1 Beam G-Spot Original: sgmlight

It all culminated with a spectacular show in the evening of January 11. As a crucial part of this show, no less than 500 pcs. of P-5 and P-2 wash lights from SGM were applied. Hamburg’s new concert hall is one of the largest and most acoustically advanced in the world. It is popularly nicknamed Elphi. The 108 metres/354 ft. tall building consist of two sections. The new glassy construction resembles a hoisted sail, water wave or quartz crystal, which is constructed on top of an old warehouse building. A terrace placed in middle, ties the new and the old sections together. This is where most of the P-5s were installed. Furthermore, all balconies on the upper part were also equipped with P-5s. The overall concept was thought-out by the global agency, Jung von Matt. Their task was to visualise the concert taking place inside the opera house on the outside of the building in real-time. Jerry Appelt was the responsible Lighting Designer that ensured that the light was synchronized with the music and video content displayed on the bottom part of the building. All lighting was supplied by PRG and their Account Manager for the event, Michael Casper, here explains why they chose to apply P-5s and P-2s over other wash lights for this event: "They are water resistant, bright and reliable – that's why we have a lot of them. They absolutely live up to all our expectations. The role of the P-5s and P-2s was to bathe the new part of the building in deeply saturated colors, changing dynamically in time with the music. The overall concept was thought-out by the global agency, Jung von Matt. Their task was to visualise the concert taking place inside the opera house on the outside of the building in real-time. Jerry Appelt was the responsible Lighting Designer that ensured that the light was synchronized with the music and video content displayed on the bottom part of the building. All lighting was supplied by PRG and their Account Manager for the event, Michael Casper, here explains why they chose to apply P-5s and P-2s over other wash lights for this event: "They are water resistant, bright and reliable – that's why we have a lot of them. They absolutely live up to all our expectations. The role of the P-5s and P-2s was to bathe the new part of the building in deeply saturated colors, changing dynamically in time with the music. They certainly delivered that - and even more.” The result of all the different elements coming together as whole, truly was a breathtaking experience. A total of 16 pcs of P-5 LED wash lights played a crucial role in the festival Moscow Ice. In the Family Circle, which was a huge ice installation in Moscow’s Victory Park (Park Pobedy). The festival represented landmarks from Russian cities such as Moscow, Crimea, St Petersburg, Volgograd and Vladivostok. The statues were 5-6 metres high and together they formed an ice city completely made from real Siberian ice. More than 1,000 tonnes of natural blue ice had been shipped in for the construction. The Kremlin fortress, which was no less than 10m high and 40 m long, was the centerpiece of the ice city. From six slides descending from the Kremlin wall, visitors could glide their way down to the different regions of Russia. The sculptures were art pieces in themselves, but adding colored light to them added a whole new dimension and brought them to life after dark. Using P-5 wash lights for seven of the sculptures, including the massive Kremlin fortress, Lighting Designers Babalyants Sergei and Andrei Kalinkin certainly achieved that. Managing Director from rental company Bogdan & Brigada explained why they chose these exact wash lights from SGM for the project: “The P-5’s IP65-rating makes it a waterproof fixture, which furthermore has no functionality problems when operating in minus degrees. This was an absolute deal breaker in our selection of lighting fixtures for this outdoor venue, especially considering the tough Russian winter conditions. Additionally, we also had our eyes on the P-5 as it is a very powerful wash light that can be directed with its interchangeable lenses and the option to slide on barndoors. We find SGM to be a reliable partner and we have had much support from the cooperation with their Regional Sales Manager.” Besides the lighting setup for ice sculptures, there were also applied 20 pcs. of P-5 and 10 pcs. of Q-7 on a stage that was used for different entertainment features from December 28 – January 8. Schallberg Tunnel Lit with LED Lighting Thanks to LED lighting from Tridonic, the Schallberg tunnel on the Simplon Pass is much brighter. The extensive, two-and-a-half-year renovation transformed the dark 1970s constructed tunnel in the Swiss Alps. The 45 km long Simplon Pass between Brig and Iselle is one of the most important transit routes in the Swiss Alps that has numerous tunnels, bridges, and galleries, most of which have been in operation since the 1960s or 70s and greatly need of repair. The Renovation of the 500 m long Schallberg tunnel at the beginning of the pass could not be delayed. “This was a complete renovation job, involving all the tunnel elements. Among other things, we repaired the two galleries, built a new escape tunnel, lowered the road in some places to provide adequate clearance for trucks, and put down a new road surface,” said Mark Siegenthaler from ASTRA, the Swiss Federal Roads Office. In addition to replacing the lighting and lighting controls, the renovation upgraded the operational and safety equipment, the ventilation system, and the power supply. Tridonic points out that now the Schallberg tunnel with its new LED lighting is bright and inviting. Swiss lighting specialist, Rigamonti supplied a total of 100 transition zone luminaires and 150 interior zone luminaires, and Tridonic supplied the “inner workings” of the luminaires. Also, the emergency lights on the walls, the escape exit signs, the escape route lights, and the escape route indicators all use LED components from Tridonic. The transition zone luminaires in the entrance and exit zones feature new RLE series LED modules that Tridonic developed specifically for tunnel lighting according to Rigamonti’s specifications. Although the entrances and exits of tunnels are high-risk areas for accidents because of the abrupt change in lighting conditions, the risk can be reduced with the right artificial lighting. Each transition zone luminaire contains two LED modules. The modules operate at a current of 350 mA, consume 112 W and generate a luminous flux of 18,350 lm. Only the last three luminaires of the transition zone use only one LED module. This lower light level eases the lighting transition as vehicles proceed to the interior zone. The LED technology allows the luminaire to have a low-profile design. The luminaires measure 1,550 mm long and 170 mm wide but only 40 mm (4 cm) deep. Tridonic based the new customized LED modules for the interior zone on its LLE Series modules. Five of the customized modules were put in each luminaire. With an operating current of 300 mA, the interior zone luminaires consume 38.25 W and provide 6,365 lm. An emission angle of 120° and correlated color temperature of 6,500 K combined with the light output produce the recommended average carriageway luminances of 45 cd/m2 in the entrance zone and 3 cd/m2 in the tunnel’s interior. The Rigamonti luminaires use 1-100% dimmable constant-current LED drivers from Tridonic’s Premium series to help ensure optimum operating conditions for the LEDs modules. The drivers allow adjustable output currents and have integrated short-circuit, overtemperature, and overload protection. The one4all interface enables dimming via DALI as well as DSI, switchDIM, and corridorFUNCTION and also has the ready2mains digital interface.
