301 Howard Street Lobby, San Francisco Architect: Huntsman Architectural Group Lighting design: Birkenstock Lighting Design, San Rafael Product: VarioLED™ Flex PHOBOS White TV IP67, VarioLED™ Flex HYDRA LD15 Customer: Vanbarton Group Location: San Francisco, USA Photos: David Wakely Photography Located at the heart of the emerging Transbay Terminal area, the building at the corner of Howard and Beale Streets suffered from an oddly configured corner entrance and under-utilized adjacent retail spaces. In order to remain competitive and attractive in the surrounding urban development, 301 Howard Street required a comprehensive renovation. The new vision was clear: transform the indistinguishable building entry into a welcoming and provocative beacon that serves as a new public amenity for tenants and visitors. The first step was to substantially reposition the building entrance from the corner to the center of the Howard Street facade. The new location provides clearer sightlines, improved access, and also increases the rentable ground floor retail space. An inspirational metaphor was established for the lobby's design through the concept of tidal movement - "push and pull". This gesture directly correlates the historic shoreline of the San Francisco Bay with the urban renewal of the SoMa neighborhood, which was once a harbor itself. The aquatic metaphor finds resonance in all aspects of the lobby's design, from light and materiality to the furniture selection. Scalloped layers of sanded plaster provide a dramatic backdrop at the ceiling plane, further emphasized by lines of light. Here the VarioLED™ Flex HYDRA LD15 W835 with an opal lens was used. This undulating gesture is mirrored in the reveals of the terrazzo flooring, where pieces of glass achieve a sparkling luminosity. The patterned concrete wall at the building’s core serves as an elegant interpretation of a seawall, while the wood wrapped elevator lobbies mimic wooden docks. The custom-fabricated seating sculptures by renowned artist, Matthias Pliessnig, were deliberately stained in driftwood tones, and are constructed much like the lightweight seagoing vessels the artist also produces. The reception desk area was illuminated with VarioLED™ Flex PHOBOS TV in W827, creating a soft warm light. As light filters through the building façade throughout the day, interior lighting levels correspond, creating a different, dramatic impression each time one traverses the lobby. The building is a former automobile garage, which was enlightened by fluorescent light until a few months ago. During the renovation, the building has been totally transformed into an organic shop. The used lighting solutions are from LED Linear™ and LTS. The central area is illuminated by LTS technical luminaire STRAITLINE. The narrow luminaire XOOLUM™ by LED Linear™ illuminates the areas of bakery, butcher, fruit and vegetables in the shop. The round, decorative PLL28 from LTS was used in the area of the cash registers. In addition, it specializes in wood paints, which preserve the natural beauty and strength of wood for a long time. The company was founded in 1878 as a wood and building material business and offers exclusively high quality products. In the lighting design of the new Showrooms in Estonia, it was therefore particularly important to put the products in the right light and emphasize their quality. The product wood is an organic material in warm tones, so it is best to use also a warm or natural light color. Another prerequisite was to have a lighting solution on the ceiling, which offers a general lighting and yet illuminates the exhibition pieces optimally. As a third requirement, a small, elegant luminaire should be selected so that it is more in the background and the showroom is not affected too much. Therefore XOOLUM™ was chosen. This filigree luminaire allows the use of high output tapes and different optics. The lighting characteristics of wallwash and opal are combined in one luminaire - a functional, efficient luminaire that performs several tasks at the same time. 3,000 K were chosen as light color. These lines were also the template for the lighting design, which chose light lines very quickly. The rounded corner and the clear floor plan should be highlighted by linear lighting. Therefore the linear LED light line VarioLED™ Flex VENUS from LED Linear was used. The light line is flexible, IP67 protected against environmental influences and impresses above all with the absolutely point-free light emission surface. This concept caused lively discussions in the committee of the building authority, which were finally ended by the building senator: the concept was approved, but with the requirement to reduce the brightness to the end of the light lines. This brightness curve could be realized with many small luminaires in a lengths of 30 cm. Each luminaire has its own address in the light control system and is controlled separately. The sections at the corner get 100%, towards the ends the light levels become lower - therefore the decent, but striking light course on both building wings develo. SGM wash lights used for crazy Christmas commercial We know that Christmas is long over. However, this electrifying Swedish commercial still deserves some attention. It is about a solar panel system that can store energy - and to underline this message an over-the-top Christmas light installation was used to underline that you can use electricity with a clean conscience. SGM LED fixtures which are known for their low power consumption and eco-friendliness therefore matched that message perfectly. Lighting Designer, Peter “Tintin” Jörgensen, applied SGM P-5 wash lights outside the building to cover up the facade and several units of their little brother, the P-2, were placed inside to highlight the windows. He explained: “Besides the low power consumption, it was important that the fixtures had a high IP rating as some of them were installed outside. I also needed a great green and red color output to underline the Christmas theme - and I knew that the P-2 and the P-5 were able to deliver just that. Rally Sweden is the biggest recurring sports event in Sweden and a part of the FIA World Rally Championship No less than approximately 100 million TV viewers worldwide and 250,000 attending spectators followed the race that took place in the province of Värmland in the middle of Sweden from February 9th-12th. For the 7th year in a row, Jakob Larsson was the responsible Lighting Designer and Production Manager who ensured that the light settings were enhancing the settings the best way possible. For that purpose, he stocked up on SGM P-5 LED wash lights: “I have a lot of experience with the P-5 and I knew it was the right lamp for the mission. I rented all that Woodlite had in stock which was about 110 pcs. If they have had more, I had rented more, as they were my first choice.” He installed the P-5s at two different so-called Super Special Stages and also at the prize ceremony. Most of fixtures were used to illuminate a new Super Special Stage located in a big quarry. Rally Sweden is taken place in rather harsh winter surroundings in Sweden, which was an ice-cold fact that Jakob needed to take into account: “First of all, I needed fixtures with a high IP-rating since the gig is outdoor in the middle of the Swedish winter. I feel that the P-5 is a very reliable product and I will definitely continue using it in future installations as well.” Jakob also found that the mix of a very high output and low power consumption was a perfect match for this big event. Furthermore, he a saw the interchangeable lenses as a big plus, which meant that he could take advantage of both 21° and 43° lense kit on the location. First Night First Day Boston is a recurring event that counts down to the New Year. To wrap up 2016 and make way for 2017, SGM’s G-Spots and G-1 Beams were chosen to illuminate the spectacle. They lit up the night while adding to the excitement of downtown Boston. The event took place in Copley Square featuring live performances, ice sculptures and fireworks. We spoke with Kyle Stetson of Port Lighting Systems who was the lighting designer for this event. He explained what role, the G-Spot has played for the company: “Port Lighting Systems was one of the first production companies in the Northeast to purchase an inventory of the G-Spot fixtures. It is a workhorse fixture for many of the outdoor events we are involved in.” It was important to him to find a fixture that would give him the look he wanted, but could also stand up to the wintery conditions found in New England. We asked him what was important to him to make this event a success: “When designing the show, we needed fixtures that could not only stand up to the New England winter weather (they saw rain, wind and snow for this event), but also compete in lumen output to other larger fixtures that were protected in scaffolding towers around the square.” The G-Spots were the sole light source for lighting the Trinity Church, backdrop and main performance center. He explained that space was a concern when setting up for this event. In order for the audience to have the best view possible, Kyle needed to find a way to integrate lighting without obstructing viewing areas: “The client wanted Trinity Church lit in pattern and color, with the ability to change throughout the night. An additional scaffolding structure was not possible as our only available fixture locations (next to Front of House) would block the view of the main stage from the rest of the Square. The G-Spots were a great choice for this location because we were able to keep them out in the elements on two small risers, allowing the building to be lit and the audience to see the main stage.” The G-1 Beams lined the rooftop of a hotel in the vicinity overlooking the green. Also exposed to the elements, Kyle needed fixtures that he could rely on. With SGM’s IP65- and IP66-ratings, these hassle-free fixtures require no weatherproof domes and almost no maintenance. Kyle elaborated: “The client also wanted beam effects in the air on the roof of the Fairmont Copley Plaza, a prominent feature of Copley Square. Waterproof domes were used for a number of beam fixtures in this location, but the budget did not allow domes for all fixtures, and a scaffolding structure was not an option due to the location and load in logistics. The G-1 Beams, supplied by Main Light Industries, were a perfect solution for this problem. They allowed us to line the edge of the roof with beam fixtures and kept the budget intact by eliminating the need for waterproof domes.” Kyle summarized on his experience working with the G-Spots for this installation: “We chose the SGM fixtures for both of these locations for their LED source, amazingly bright output and outdoor rating. On January 6, the Danish popular radio P6 BEAT held its annual music event P6 BEAT Rocker Koncerthuset. For the fifth year in a row, the show hosted a variety of different established and upcoming artists from home and abroad. The overall lighting concept was based on the creation of a festival feeling inside DR Koncerthuset, which is a concert hall designed for classical music. For this concert, four stages were set up inside the 360° venue. Every stage performance had its own unique expression. The show was an ongoing concert, where each band played three to four songs, until the hosts led the audience's attention to a new stage with the artist next in line. Lighting designer/operator, Sune Verdier, elaborated: "Because of the fact that the mounting opportunities were very limited, we had a general festival-like lighting rig with an even distribution of wash og spot moving heads. On the floor we had 20 pcs. of SGM P-5 wash lights as a border around the stages. To create this border and a backdrop for the audience and the tv camera, we used the P-5s to light the artists up close. The rectangular shape of the fixture gave a geometrical finish to the edge of the stage, which provided a sharp look for the otherwise small stages." For the installation, Sune Verdier needed both a good wash and strobe light that could also function as a backdrop for the artist. He found all these features combined in the P-5. He highlighted the high power level and strong saturated colors as the main advantages of the compact LED wash light. Furthermore, he added: "Whenever I can, I tend to use the P-5 as it’s a very good static wash light, which is also very versatile due to its outdoor capability being IP65-rated." It all culminated with a spectacular show in the evening of January 11. As a crucial part of this show, no less than 500 pcs. of P-5 and P-2 wash lights from SGM were applied. Hamburg’s new concert hall is one of the largest and most acoustically advanced in the world. It is popularly nicknamed Elphi. The 108 metres/354 ft. tall building consist of two sections. The new glassy construction resembles a hoisted sail, water wave or quartz crystal, which is constructed on top of an old warehouse building. A terrace placed in middle, ties the new and the old sections together. This is where most of the P-5s were installed. Furthermore, all balconies on the upper part were also equipped with P-5s. The overall concept was thought-out by the global agency, Jung von Matt. Their task was to visualise the concert taking place inside the opera house on the outside of the building in real-time. Jerry Appelt was the responsible Lighting Designer that ensured that the light was synchronized with the music and video content displayed on the bottom part of the building. All lighting was supplied by PRG and their Account Manager for the event, Michael Casper, here explains why they chose to apply P-5s and P-2s over other wash lights for this event: "They are water resistant, bright and reliable – that's why we have a lot of them. They absolutely live up to all our expectations. The role of the P-5s and P-2s was to bathe the new part of the building in deeply saturated colors, changing dynamically in time with the music. They certainly delivered that - and even more.” The result of all the different elements coming together as whole, truly was a breathtaking experience. A total of 16 pcs of P-5 LED wash lights played a crucial role in the festival Moscow Ice. In the Family Circle, which was a huge ice installation in Moscow’s Victory Park (Park Pobedy). The festival represented landmarks from Russian cities such as Moscow, Crimea, St Petersburg, Volgograd and Vladivostok. The statues were 5-6 metres high and together they formed an ice city completely made from real Siberian ice. More than 1,000 tonnes of natural blue ice had been shipped in for the construction. The Kremlin fortress, which was no less than 10m high and 40 m long, was the centerpiece of the ice city. From six slides descending from the Kremlin wall, visitors could glide their way down to the different regions of Russia. The sculptures were art pieces in themselves, but adding colored light to them added a whole new dimension and brought them to life after dark. Using P-5 wash lights for seven of the sculptures, including the massive Kremlin fortress, Lighting Designers Babalyants Sergei and Andrei Kalinkin certainly achieved that. Managing Director from rental company Bogdan & Brigada explained why they chose these exact wash lights from SGM for the project: “The P-5’s IP65-rating makes it a waterproof fixture, which furthermore has no functionality problems when operating in minus degrees. This was an absolute deal breaker in our selection of lighting fixtures for this outdoor venue, especially considering the tough Russian winter conditions. Additionally, we also had our eyes on the P-5 as it is a very powerful wash light that can be directed with its interchangeable lenses and the option to slide on barndoors. We find SGM to be a reliable partner and we have had much support from the cooperation with their Regional Sales Manager.” Besides the lighting setup for ice sculptures, there were also applied 20 pcs. of P-5 and 10 pcs. of Q-7 on a stage that was used for different entertainment features from December 28 – January 8. Pavement lights guide 'smartphone zombies' Pavement lights have been installed at a pedestrian crossing in a Netherlands town to help smartphone users cross the road safely. The light strips are designed to catch the eye of people looking down at their device, and change colour to match traffic signals. It's not a difficult scenario to imagine: A group of pedestrians stand on a street corner, waiting for the crosswalk light to turn green. At least a few, if not all, are staring down at their smartphones. For whatever reason — whether scrolling through Instagram or engrossed in a game of Cooking Fever — they're not fully attuned to the traffic light ahead. A particularly oblivious walker might even step into oncoming traffic. “Smartphone zombies,” as the Verge described them, have become a real concern — and one Dutch municipality wants to stem the problem before it gets worse. Now officials in Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, about 25 miles south of Amsterdam in the western Netherlands, are piloting a program that they think may help protect such distracted pedestrians. At a handful of intersections around town, illuminated LED strips of light (called "+Lichtlijn,” or light lines) have been installed into the pavement. The “light lines” can change color and are synced with their corresponding traffic lights; as soon as the normal crossing light turns red or green, so, too, does the one in the ground. The idea, officials said, is that people on their phones are going to be staring toward their feet anyway. Why not make it more likely that they will still be able to see the traffic light in their immediate peripheral vision? “The lure of social media, games, WhatsApp and music is great, and it comes at the expense of paying attention to traffic,” town alderman Kees Oskam said in a statement. “As a government, we probably can't reverse this trend, but we can anticipate problems.” The project has attracted criticism from Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN), a group that advocates for road safety in the Netherlands. “What you are doing is rewarding bad behavior,” a spokesman for the group told DutchNews.nl about the light lines. Nevertheless, schools in Bodegraven-Reeuwijk that are near the test light lines are reportedly excited about the pilot program, hoping it will increase safety. HIG Traffic Systems, which developed the light lines, hopes other cities in the Netherlands will be interested in the system as well, according to Omroep West. In the United States, “distracted walking” has becoming an increasingly serious problem. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,376 pedestrians were killed in the United States in 2015, up from 4,884 the year before. Nearly three-quarters of those deaths take place at “non-intersections,” while 19 percent occur at places where pedestrians are meant to be, including crosswalks and sidewalks. In 2015, for the first time, the National Safety Council included in an annual report statistics about distracted-walking incidents involving cellphones. The group found that distracted walking was responsible for more than 11,100 injuries between 2000 and 2011. The council's list of pedestrian safety tips includes such age-old advice as “Look left, right and left again before crossing the street” but also now warns never to use a cellphone or other electronic device while walking.
