  2. As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer, good lighting in the home is essential for everyday life. A large number of smart lighting solutions are available, which go far beyond the capabilities of conventional lamps. Intelligent lighting control has a practical use in many ways. It makes the home more comfortable and saves energy, future proofing it for the next generation. Here are four reasons why you should opt for smart lighting solutions: Smart light controls itself and offers more comfort Many commuters don’t like leaving and arriving back at the house in the dark. There is a simple solution – an intelligent light control. Pre-set lighting times control the light at home; the intelligent lamps then turn on or off automatically. But smart light also makes those TV evenings on the couch much more comfortable: the light can simply be controlled from the sofa with the tablet or smartphone. Save energy and money Intelligent lighting control not only saves time, but also energy and money. Automatic dimming at the appropriate time or daylight intensity ensures that daylight is used optimally. This way, energy is used economically, benefitting the environment and keeping those energy bills down. Promote concentration and wellbeing with the appropriate lighting Lighting has a major effect on our overall wellbeing. Different light colours can promote concentration or happiness in different situations or settings. For example, cold-white light is often used in the working environment because it increases performance and concentrating capacity. Warm white light, on the other hand, promotes emotional wellbeing and has a soothing effect. Also, the sleep-wake-rhythm can be supported by active light control. For a better and more restful sleep, experts recommend that we dim the light and avoid cold light at least an hour before going to bed. In the morning, lamps in the bedroom can be programmed to light up slowly, simulating a sunrise. Protect against burglars Illuminated rooms gives the impression that the room is in use and occupied. A programmed smart light timer can help to deter burglars when on holiday, for example, by creating the appearance of someone turning a light on and off. A permanently switched on light will be recognised by persistent burglars. With a wide variety of shapes and colours available, smart lighting products offer stylish yet versatile and practical lighting solutions to keep your home illuminated this winter.
  3. US automaker, General Motors reports that the company has installed 186,000 LED bulbs and fixtures at its facilities in the past two years The LED lighting installation is just one of many energy-saving projects that the company has taken on this year that will save an estimated $73 million in energy costs annually. GM has the ambitious goal of meeting the electricity needs of all of its global operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. “Energy efficiency can reduce electricity loads, which will help us more easily transition to renewable energy sources,” said Al Hildreth, GM’s global energy manager. “Together, these environmental improvements help us reduce our carbon footprint, cut costs and deliver value back to our customers.” GM points out that sixteen of its facilities recently earned recognition for continued efforts to increase energy efficiency. Defiance Operations replaced fluorescent lighting with 200 LED fixtures throughout the facility. This upgrade helped Defiance reduce energy intensity by over 20 percent in 2 years. Bedford Casting Operations installed translucent walls with a southern exposure, which reduce the need for artificial lighting in the plant. Actions like this helped the facility reduce its energy intensity by 12 percent. Grand Rapids Operations replaced 11,000 lights with LED tubes, which helped the facility reduce energy intensity by 18 percent. More information can be found at http://www.gm.com
  4. The small, sophisticated tool for outdoor lighting: ERCO Kona XS projectors, floodlights and wallwashers With Kona XS, ERCO presents a new system of outdoor lighting tools designed to complete the range of compact luminaires with low power consumption. Kona XS may be small in design, but it is big on quality, with lighting technology and a robust construction that meet the professional standards of architects, lighting designers, landscape and urban planners. 9. On October 13, 2016, Boston mayor, Martin J. Walsh unveiled the new LED-based architectural lighting of Boston City Hall. The lighting debut was during this year’s final Beer Garden on the Bricks event, themed “Light Bright Beer Garden.” The city intends the new LED lighting to highlight and enhance the building’s original design and increase public safety. The exterior lighting installation is one among several ongoing initiatives to highlight City Hall and City Hall Plaza and make them more inviting for residents. “I am proud that for the first time in its 48 year history, Boston City Hall is going to shine,” said Mayor Walsh. “This state of the art lighting system will help make City Hall the civic heart of our city by livening up the plaza, while making the area safer and connecting us to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Bringing new light to City Hall is symbolic of a more responsive vision here at City Hall, one that is meant to be engaging, inspiring, and serve as a beacon of the city and our values.” New LED fixtures replaced the original Metal Halide exterior recessed lighting and the existing floodlights that illuminate the building’s lower levels and accentuate the entrances. The new fixtures cover the building in a warm white light, and they can produce a broad range of colors. Such color options can allow the City to light the building to acknowledge a variety of celebratory and public events. The mayor lit the building blue to recognize the police officers injured in East Boston, and as a further demonstration of its light changing capability, the mayor changed the color to pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pink lights at city hall added to pink lighting of numerous buildings and landmarks around the city. The lighting highlights the original three-part design of City Hall. The lower levels house the public spaces of the building. The symbolic spaces including the middle sections hold the offices of the Mayor and the City Council, and the administrative spaces crown the building and house the administrative functions of government. According to the city, the new exterior lighting improves security lighting. The city says that the system allows for the floodlights and associated conduit added to the building over the years to be entirely removed. “By illuminating its iconic and bold form, City Hall’s interaction with Boston’s urban fabric may be reinvigorated,” said David Eisen FAIA, Boston Society of Architects/AIA (BSA) Vice President for Communications. “It’s a decisive step toward transforming one of the most internationally renowned buildings that make up our distinct architectural heritage.” The new fixtures are more energy efficient than the Metal Halide fixtures and the existing Flood Lights that they replace. The LED lighting is expected to save the city about 300,000 kWh of electricity annually compared to the replaced lights. The LED technology has a projected 20-year lifespan compared to the 4-year life of the metal halide lights that the LED system replaces. The City expects additional savings from the cost of maintenance and light replacement. Arcade lights have also been retrofitted with LED lighting to complement the new City Hall lighting. The same controller will be able to operate and coordinate both the arcade lights and the City Hall lights. “It is wonderful that the City is taking this opportunity to recreate its own home place – City Hall – as the keystone and central event in an ongoing pursuit of improved illumination for our city,” said Todd Lee, President of LIGHT Boston. 10. Hunke jewellers and opticians is a family business with a long and rich tradition in the town of Ludwigsburg, Germany. Situated in the centre of one of Europe’s most renowned baroque cities, the owners planned to fuse the historical, traditional townhouse which hosted their established store with a newly built, neighbouring corner house. In consequence, the interior design concept was meant to be a one-of-a-kind fusion of past and future elements, using premium materials. The aim of the lighting concept was, to underline and sharpen this approach. The ambient lighting in the jeweller’s part oft the store is generated by large fields of illuminated ceilings, integrated in an accurately shaped drywall ceiling structure. Random arranged spheres of diffuse glass complete the ambiance and serve as illumination for the facial area. The bright and brilliant product lighting is generated by recessed, adjustable downlights with reflectors made of dichroic glass, again integrated in a custom made drywall ceiling construction. The showcases are illuminated by a combination of two lighting principles: the back wall is brightened up from top to bottom by a diffuse linear LED-strip, and the products are highlighted by directional miniaturized spotlights with different beam angles and colour temperatures. An elaborate filter layer behind the shopwindows generates a fascinating link between exterior and interior: a glass pane, printed with a gradient and supported by floor-integrated linear lighting, generates transparence as well as privacy. The very centre of the store is the two-storey lounge area, situtated in the oldest part of the building. It is dominated by a golden ceiling setback with a bundle of 40 custom made glass pendants in a random arrangement. In the opticians store, an accurately arranged system of thin black ceiling lines with integrated track lighting provides an optimal flexibility for the different requirements of the illumination. A combination of glare reduced downlights (circulation areas), wallwashers (showcase walls) and powerful linear lighting (consultant tables), accompanied by directional spotlights (shelves and tables) create a well balanced, glare reduced lighting atmosphere. 11. Alessi, Beautiful Kitchenware Store Design The design of the Alessi Flagship store in Soho New York creates a new identity for the Alessi brand and increases its global presence with the launch of this first US based store. Asymptote designed of the store’s interior architecture to reflect the brand's unparalleled reputation for innovation, quality and engagement in everyday life. As the Soho site is deep and relatively narrow Asymptote developed a sequence of spaces that are characterized and delineated by a geometric manipulation of the walls and ceiling that progresses through the length of the space. Integrated with the faceted geometry of the walls and ceiling, 'bands of light' are spaced at regular intervals throughout the store and function primarily as spatial thresholds between one interior module and the next. Beyond the mandated display of merchandise within the store's interior Asymptote designed a café, a bar as well as a small exhibition area, thereby transforming an otherwise conventional retail program into a multifaceted environment that engages the customer in unique ways. The storefront window itself, both propels the space of the store out into the urban environment while on the interior it extends and merges spatially with the adjoining exhibition area. Here at the store entrance iconic pieces from Alessi's extensive repertoire are exhibited in illuminated molded display modules inserted seamlessly into the walls. The design of the café is also integrated into the architecture of the store with recessed café seating and an articulated 3D milled counter that is set against a large scale custom designed wall graphic. This wall graphic along with the store's distinctive packaging, signage and other elements were all designed by Asymptote as part of Alessi's new branding strategy. Asymptote also custom designed the store's unique modular display system manufactured by Vitra, that showcases the stores merchandise. Source: asymptote

  13. Beef Stored Under LED Lights Stays Red Longer Researchers from College of Agriculture Food & Natural Resources at the University of Missouri have found that hamburger meat stored under LED lights retains its red color longer than it does under incandescent bulbs. Despite having no nutritional difference, consumers associate this red color with the freshness of ground beef. The red color gradually turns brown over time. Carol Lorenzen, a professor of meat science, pointed out that the red color of the ground beef is the one of the primary driver’s of consumer choice. Professor Lorenzen and her graduate student, Jade Cooper, have examined the impact of LED lighting on beef color. The team published a paper in the October 2016 issue of the Journal of Animal Science. The research paper mainly explained how keeping ground beef under LED lights as opposed to incandescent bulbs can slow down the redness-discoloration (oxidation) process in hamburger meat. The team compared the redness of the ground beef under LED lights to ground beef kept under conventional incandescent bulbs. They also tested storage under no light as a negative control. The researchers found that ground beef stored under no light retained its red color the longest. However, this is not an option when selling meat, because consumers have to see the meat they buy. They examined the color of ground beef patties that were both five and 25 percent fat at one, three, five, and seven-day intervals. The team also tested the patties for concentrations of lipid oxidation and myoglobin. Lipid oxidation is a primary cause of quality deterioration that can lead to rancidity or off flavor in fatty or raw tissues. Myoglobin is the protein responsible for the meat’s color. The deli cases were kept at temperatures near two degrees Celsius (35.6 Fahrenheit) during the experiment. Funding for the study came via a grant from the Missouri Beef Industry Council. The more discoloration occurred, the longer the samples were stored in the display cases. By the fifth day, the more red color of the LED-lit patties was noticeable compared to those under fluorescent lights. The patties under LEDs also had had less oxidation of color and fat, giving them extra display shelf life. Source: solidstatelighting

  18. In Stockholm, AF Lighting has designed a media facade that reflects the weather, and helps build the brand of a major insurance company. The head office of Swedish insurance company If sits directly above a busy motorway just north of Stockholm. It has always been an imposing building – but rather an anonymous one, with an unlit facade. ÅF Lighting was asked to do something about that. The resulting solution is characterized by a soft, welcoming light, which matches the recently updated visual guidelines of the insurance company, and its concept of being “close to the people”. For many years, the one distinguishing feature of the building was an old digital clock sitting on top of it, which also displays outside temperature, as a service to passers-by. ÅF Lighting kept this in mind when creating the lighting concept, which involves LED strips being fitted to the entire facade, with a dynamic light flowing through them like changes in the weather. The lighting scheme also reflects actual local weather conditions, enabling the public to experience the façade lit according to natural conditions such as wind, snow, rain, sun and clouds as well as the seasonal changes. The work also included to update the old clock with a new design and new media logo. Apart from conveying a message about the weather, the lighting also gives the building a lighter, more dynamic feel, and provides an aesthetic experience for car-borne commuters on an otherwise eventless motorway. ”The project has presented challenges to which we have found innovative solutions”, says lighting designer Francesco Guastella. ”As part of the creative process, we worked closely with the customer to develop mood boards, inspired by their brand message about closeness to people. Eventually we decided that nature and its changes is something that everybody can relate to. Who has not gazed into the flames of an open fire, for instance, or at the waves lapping at a shore? This is what inspired us when creating the lighting programme that now flows along the facade.” Installing the light rods proved to be the most challenging part of the project. As the façade faces a motorway, building cranes could not reach to all the necessary installation areas. Instead, climbers were hired to perform the work. ”It looked absolutely terrifying, but the results are extraordinary”, says an evidently pleased Francesco Guastella. Now commuters are met by a beautiful façade each day, reflecting the weather in that particular moment. In other words, the lighting helps communicate the If brand, and adds value to people in their everyday lives. Source: af-lighting
  19. Thorn Lights the Revamped PalaTrento Arena Thorn Lighting has delivered a comprehensive new lighting system for a multipurpose sports arena in the Italian city of Trento. The new Altis Sport LED floodlights provide the perfect conditions for a range of matches and sporting events, helping the Aquila Basket Trento basketball team and Trentino Volley volleyball club enjoy both home advantage and the best possible lighting when they entertain visitors to the PalaTrento arena. London, October 2017 – The local authorities in Trento have marked the start of the new basketball and volleyball seasons by officially opening the renovated PalaTrento municipal arena, the true home of sport in the north Italian city. A series of major works have recently been carried out at the venue, which can accommodate 4360 spectators and will soon be expanded to offer seating for 5000 sports fans. This extensive renovation project has included refurbishment of the flooring, renewal of the seating area and a completely new lighting system. With a clear desire to mirror the high-calibre nature of the sporting performances and guarantee the public an unforgettable visitor experience, plans for the renewal of the lighting focused on designing a modern system that would minimise energy consumption and maximise lighting quality. Thorn was committed to giving the PalaTrento arena the lighting it deserves, combining norm compliance and outstanding efficiency with first-class lighting quality for both competitive matches and regular training. The thorough product selection process finally settled on the Thorn Altis Sport, a high-power LED floodlight for sports lighting applications. Altis Sport provides exceptional flicker-free lighting, which is suitable for HDTV broadcasting, and features a flexible optical system that crafts an optimised lighting distribution, offering players the perfect environment in which to show their sporting excellence. A total of 92 symmetrical and asymmetrical floodlights can achieve lighting levels of up to 3400 lux, while a DMX system enables full individual control of dimming and directional positioning. As a result, visitors to the PalaTrento can now also experience the type of spectacular team presentations normally seen before National Basketball Association (NBA) games in America. The new lighting system comfortably outperforms the large number of conventional discharge lamps that formed the mainstay of the old installation. Indeed, different luminaire sizes and varying lighting intensities meant that the arena was previously unable to guarantee the achievement of the regulatory standards required for high-level international competitions. The extensive experience of Thorn with sporting applications was greatly appreciated by all parties involved in the project. The impressive new lighting system is the result of excellent collaboration between Thorn and team members such as Teknoengineering, a long-term partner of the Zumtobel Group. Source: thornlighting
  20. LED LIGHTING MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP When commercial and industrial LED lighting systems were first introduced, some proponents of those systems claimed that they were maintenance-free with lifespan expectations in excess of 50,000 hours. LED systems do have fewer maintenance obligations than the metal halide and high-pressure sodium systems that they are replacing, but even minor maintenance will extend the life of an LED system and improve the economics of an organization’s decision to transition to LED’s. In addition, a handful of companies have crafted LED lights with advanced thermal management that reduces their degradation due to heat buildup, and simpler LED designs that allow for repair and replacement of LED lamps and fixtures with few or no tools. LED Lighting Maintenance LED lamps generate light through solid state electronics that are controlled by embedded drivers in the lamps and fixtures themselves. The actual components that generate light are less likely to degrade than the drivers, which can experience performance degradation due to heat buildup and thermal overload. A few of the pioneering manufacturers of LED lighting systems, including SpecGrade LED, have designed patented thermal management systems that more effectively remove heat from the lamps and fixtures. Heat transfer will be improved if the lamps and fixtures are kept free from dust and debris, and occasional cleaning of LED fixtures can lead to longer performance. LED maintenance costs are typically divided between components and labor. Component costs will generally not vary, but labor costs can increase dramatically if a lighting system is complex and more time is required to access and repair fixtures, or if those repairs need to be done at off times when a facility’s regular operations have subsided. Next-generation LED fixtures and systems incorporate designs that facilitate quicker and easier repairs that can be completed with few or no tools. Modular LED systems also allow repairs and replacements of single fixtures without affecting other fixtures in a lighting array. As LED control systems become more advanced, manufacturers will likely include features such as remote wireless control and monitoring. A facilities manager can then coordinate and control lighting in several locations from a single wireless internet-connected device. Organizations that are considering an LED retrofit or an installation of an LED system into a new facility should plan for updates and upgrades to those systems that wireless control and other future innovations. Adopting a more flexible LED system now will make upgrades simpler and less expensive in the future. Organizations can plan for regular periodic maintenance of an LED system, or they can adopt a more reactive program that calls for maintenance as a response to performance issues. If, for example, a facility’s electrical utility costs begin to increase, or employees note that LED illumination is decreasing, the organization can then implement maintenance procedures in response to those observations. In all cases, LED maintenance and upkeep obligations add to overhead costs that every organization seeks to control. Those costs are already lower for LED lighting systems, but they can be reduced even further if an organization selects an LED system that includes advanced thermal management systems and that makes repairs and replacements as simple as is possible. 22. LED Lighting for Racetracks and Motor Speedways Shows Tremendous Benefits Major auto racing venues were latecomers with respect to using artificial lighting for nighttime events. Those venues are typically much larger, requiring more total lighting and imposing greater operating costs and electricity usage than baseball or football fields. Moreover, motorsports drivers need very high quality lighting for better visibility and safety as they drive at average speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. LED lighting is the ideal answer for all of these challenges, and next-generation LED lighting systems have a potential to transform a sport that has traditionally been relegated to daylight hours. Basement lighting

I have a finished basement living room that we use for entertaining and watching tv. However, the lighting is not great. The room is approximately 30 x 12 with eight foot ceilings. There is one ceiling fixtures about 1/3 of the way off of each of the end walls and one ceiling fixture at the bottom of the stairs. What can I do to get better lighting? Thanks
