  1. In Stockholm, AF Lighting has designed a media facade that reflects the weather, and helps build the brand of a major insurance company. The head office of Swedish insurance company If sits directly above a busy motorway just north of Stockholm. It has always been an imposing building – but rather an anonymous one, with an unlit facade. ÅF Lighting was asked to do something about that. The resulting solution is characterized by a soft, welcoming light, which matches the recently updated visual guidelines of the insurance company, and its concept of being “close to the people”. For many years, the one distinguishing feature of the building was an old digital clock sitting on top of it, which also displays outside temperature, as a service to passers-by. ÅF Lighting kept this in mind when creating the lighting concept, which involves LED strips being fitted to the entire facade, with a dynamic light flowing through them like changes in the weather. The lighting scheme also reflects actual local weather conditions, enabling the public to experience the façade lit according to natural conditions such as wind, snow, rain, sun and clouds as well as the seasonal changes. The work also included to update the old clock with a new design and new media logo. Apart from conveying a message about the weather, the lighting also gives the building a lighter, more dynamic feel, and provides an aesthetic experience for car-borne commuters on an otherwise eventless motorway. ”The project has presented challenges to which we have found innovative solutions”, says lighting designer Francesco Guastella. ”As part of the creative process, we worked closely with the customer to develop mood boards, inspired by their brand message about closeness to people. Eventually we decided that nature and its changes is something that everybody can relate to. Who has not gazed into the flames of an open fire, for instance, or at the waves lapping at a shore? This is what inspired us when creating the lighting programme that now flows along the facade.” Installing the light rods proved to be the most challenging part of the project. As the façade faces a motorway, building cranes could not reach to all the necessary installation areas. Instead, climbers were hired to perform the work. ”It looked absolutely terrifying, but the results are extraordinary”, says an evidently pleased Francesco Guastella. Now commuters are met by a beautiful façade each day, reflecting the weather in that particular moment. In other words, the lighting helps communicate the If brand, and adds value to people in their everyday lives. Source: af-lighting
  3. RGBW Smart LED Panels Aurora Siri Voice Control With so much visual stimuli passing by our eyes every day thanks to social media, many people are finding that committing to static pieces of artwork is more difficult than ever. If you're looking for something to spruce up your walls, but feel that a single painting or photo isn't enough to capture your ever-changing moods, the new Nanoleaf Aurora offers an interesting solution. Described as "living paint" by the Toronto-based lighting design company, this modular system of energy-efficient LED panels is fully customizable, and can be controlled by remote, smartphone app, or even your voice. Composed of nine lightweight, triangular LED lights that can be fit together in different configurations, the Nanoleaf Aurora can light up your wall (or any other flat surface in your home) using a palette of over 16 million colors. It can go from a soothing white light in the morning to a blaze of energizing purples, blues and greens during the day to a relaxing warm light in the evening–or pretty much any other type mood lighting you can imagine. The Nanoleaf Aurora Smarter lighting kit was made for DIY installation and includes 9 RGBW Smart LED Panels, 9 Panel Connectors, 9 Mounting Stencils, 28 Mounting Strips, 1 Power Supply Unit, and 1 Controller Unit. Because the panels weigh so little, there’s no need to drill any holes in your walls, making the Aurora ideal for renters as well. While the Aurora does come with a controller, the panels can also be configured using the Nanoleaf Smarter Series app or with your voice through Siri and Apple HomeKit. Because the Aurora is tunable white, it can also be used to mimic daylight, meaning it can double as a mood-enhancing light for those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or for anyone who could use a bit more natural light in their lives. Nanoleaf says they also plan on releasing a ‘sunrise’ function soon that will allow the Aurora to gradually get brighter each morning as a gentle way to help people wake up. 5. Victoria Place Lighting by Hoare Lea Lighting, London – UK, 2015 Working with Haskoll Architects, Hoare Lea Lighting developed the lighting solution for Victoria Place Shopping Centre, the newly refurbished retail and food and beverage destination in Victoria Train Station, London. The centre now hosts a number of popular retailers including, Holland & Barrett, David Clulow and Next and a selection of restaurants, casual eateries, coffee shops and convenience food stores. The brief presented to Haskoll was to refurbish the shopping centre and food court with the aim of re-launching Victoria Place as a retail and food and beverage location that would attract a greater proportion of the flow of visitors to the station (around 120m each year) and from surrounding areas. Hoare Lea Lighting worked with Haskoll to create a bright environment with a vibrant lighting design for the 9000m2, two-storey space. Ambient lighting is provided by linear recessed and surface mounted luminaires and LED downlights, which create a comfortable visual environment, assisting wayfinding and navigation. An impression of natural light is generated through the large Barrisol ceiling, backlit by an array of Osram LED modules. This creates the illusion of daylight, which encourages visitors to linger, especially in the restaurant areas on the second floor balcony. Feature elements include Optelma’s ‘Conico’ cone-shaped luminaire. This bespoke pendant adds drama, while providing general illumination to the floor of the mall. It incorporates a subtle colour-change element, which discreetly adds interest to the scene. Pardip Kaur, Architect, Haskoll said ‘Haskoll’s concept for the lighting scheme was designed to create a dramatic and uplifting interior that would transform the previously dark and uninviting space. The various lighting solutions work together to create a vibrant environment for both retailers and end-users. The lighting design has successfully reinvigorated the mall and foodcourt areas whilst adding value to the development and refocusing it as a retail destination.’ Source: retaildesignblog, hoarelealighting
  6. intu Victoria Centre, Nottingham » Retail Lighting Design The £40 million re-model and refresh of intu Victoria Centre, Nottingham has transformed the Centre’s tired appearance, creating a vibrant and bold retail interior. Optelma worked with lighting designers Hoare Lea Lighting to design and develop large, bespoke feature pendants that would work with the scale of the central mall. Suspended in the skylight bays, these elegant two-metre-high moulded ‘Conico’ pendants are key elements, which visually separate the retail spaces from the food and beverage courts, while softening the overall impression. The custom-built pendants feature RGBW LEDs which enable a dynamic, yet subtle, uniform colour-change to take place throughout the day. This mirrors the colour-change within the walkways, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated visual appearance. Each Conico pendant has a 3000lm Xicato downlight built into the base, providing general illumination beneath as well as a platform for the emergency lighting. Martin Breeden Development Director of intu commented: ‘The refurbishment of intu Victoria Centre has enhanced the centre’s look and feel throughout, and the lighting design has really complemented this, helping us to achieve a modern and welcoming environment.' Refresh of intu Victoria Centre in Nottingham included a full upgrade, with the aim of transforming the Centre’s tired appearance and creating a fresh, exciting interior, while introducing a lit personality to the façade. In addition, the project delivered a prominent new southern entrance and a two-level catering cluster centred on the Grade II listed clock tower. Hoare Lea Lighting was appointed by intu to design a new lighting scheme for intu Victoria Centre. To give the interior a fresh dynamism, many of the finishes were taken back to the primary structure before new layers were applied. The remodelling has allowed the daylight function to be enhanced and for the integration of energy-efficient artificial lighting. This has enabled the creation of a softly lit environment, in which strong visual architecture is supported by lighting. Linear forms characterise the architectural enhancements and this language is echoed in the lighting design. Indirect linear lighting to the soffit provides ambient light (from ACDC’s Orelle) in a fresh 4000K white light. This contrasts with the warmer, more relaxing treatment of 3000K within the food and beverage courts. Here, linear ‘tramlines’ of light, from KKDC’s Lini Glow XL, run across the ceiling, their architectural forms spilling into the main malls, adding an exuberant feel and giving a playful visual lead from one space to the next. Hidden sources and integrated lighting combine with white light and RGB colour-change for a clean, dynamic feel. On the walkways, soft washes from hidden lines-of-light are punctuated by pools of light created by spotlights and downlights from Lumenpulse/ AlphaLED and iGuzzini. Peripheral coves running parallel with the walkways are washed with a hidden RGBW linear product (Traxon’s 1PXL Cove Light), which allows for a subtle, slow, uniform colour-change throughout the day. This colour change is mirrored by RGBW feature pendants in the central mall, thereby ensuring a co-ordinated visual appearance. Suspended in the skylight bays, the ‘Conico’ pendants, custom-built by Optelma, are key visual features which work to visually separate the main retail mall spaces from the food and beverage courts, while softening the overall impression of the malls. Commenting on the design, Chris Fox, Senior Lighting Designer, Hoare Lea said: ‘The approach we took was that of ‘lighting through layers’ – combining direct and indirect sources to build a visual scene with various options. Control allows dimming of groups of luminaires to create scenes and for the switching between pre-programed scenes throughout the day. ‘ The exterior of the Centre has been transformed, with the dated 1970s brutalist concrete facade now clad in a clean, contemporary finish. As night falls, the back-lit cladding comes alive with light and colour. White light follows the building’s form, washing each panel in a neutral 4000K, supplied by Osram’s LINEARLight Power Flex. The cladding surrounding the main entrance has a linear wash. DMX feeds give control over each panel and, using a bespoke RGB lensed product from NJO Technology, turn the entrance into an eye-catching media façade. The Clock Tower, an icon on the Nottingham cityscape, has been given a traditional uplight treatment, which complements the architecture, while contrasting with the new backlit entrance cladding and glazed entrance. Ground-recessed uplights, from Bega, illuminate the red brickwork in 3000K, while spotlights (ACDC’s Plaza) pick out the higher levels and the clock face. Martin Breeden Development Director of intu commented: ‘The £40m refurbishment of intu Victoria Centre has enhanced the centre’s look and feel throughout, and the lighting design has really complemented this, helping us to achieve a modern and welcoming environment.’ Source: optelma, retaildesignblog, hoarelealighting
  7. Centrum Černý Most, Prague, Czech Republic Centrum Černý Most is a major new retail project in Prague, delivering the developer’s vision of an iconic and luxurious retail destination. The design concept emphasized the use of light, making it a key driver in creating a luxury and indulgent experience for shoppers. Key views and entry points were defined using lighting and structures. These included illumination of the floating canopies, glowing goal posts which frame the vehicle entrance ramps, and an interactive and dynamic LED colour-changing cinema corner, providing a defining statement to the entire site. The existing mall received a comprehensive overhaul and was given an entirely fresh design approach. Large circular features maximise the qualities of height, luxury and airiness within the space. Low glare lighting was designed to supplement this and maintain visual comfort to those navigating through the space. Within the new mall extension, flexible, dynamic twin runs of cold cathode are hidden delicately within carefully designed coves. These change during the day from a cool colour temperature, mimicking daylight, whilst slowly transitioning into a warm and luxurious environment towards dusk. Source: ndylight

    Project Green Light

115 Batman Street, Melbourne, Australia The Base Building solution for 115 Batman Street was designed to meet with the Green Star requirements of the project. The overall building design utilizes an integrated design ideology, taking significant advantage of the available daylight via both the high and extensive glazing. Window screening is used to provide amelioration of direct sunlight where necessary and the lighting control system that manages the lighting throughout the tenancy is linked to photo electric cells to dim the luminaires in relation to the available daylight. Motion sensors are also provided throughout to manage the lighting after hours by activating the lighting in areas of movement. The fitout orientated spaces including the main reception, meeting rooms were designed with large luminous grids of pendants while the staff breakout space was designed to be deliberately different with custom pendants that feature panoramic photo montages of the Royal Botanical Gardens. 9. 39 Victoria Street, London, United Kingdom The refurbishment of this key building in Victoria involved the relighting of the main office floors with low energy lighting and the creation of an impressive new entry experience. A special canopy feature was developed with integrated lighting built-in to visually link the interior spaces to the external streetscape. A series of canter-lever arms extend through the interior lobby and are brought together to form a canopy at the entry point on the streetscape. Adjustable lighting offers the facility for varying coloured presentations. Whilst a set colour balance is used at most times in a static mode, for special occasions the colours, tone and brightness can be set to different levels. The lighting controls utilise the DMX protocol which in this project is on a wireless network, due to the complex nature of the building and the tight voids which precluded traditional cable ways to be threaded through the structure. 11. Introducing the most energy-efficient flowering lamp ever Eindhoven, The Netherlands – Philips Lighting (Euronext Amsterdam ticker: LIGHT), a global leader in lighting, today announced the launch of the Philips GreenPower LED flowering lamp 2.0, an even more energy efficient way to extend daylight or interrupt the night growing cycle in greenhouses for growers that cultivate strawberries, cut flowers, bedding plants and cuttings. The new Philips GreenPower LED flowering lamp 2.0 builds on the first generation of Philips GreenPower LED flowering lamp and comes in two different spectral versions with light recipes for growing cut flowers and soft fruit. The new highly energy-efficient lamp is designed to increase the yield, quality and consistency of crops and accelerate flowering. Its design draws upon over twenty years’ experience that Philips Lighting has in horticultural lighting to serve the needs of growers. The first generation of the Philips GreenPower flowering lamp provided an important benchmark for energy efficiency following trials in 2014 and 2015 at the Research Centre Hoogstraten in Belgium, an independent horticultural research center. The next generation lamp provides an optimum spectrum and high light output and allows growers to save electricity costs by being 90% more energy efficient than conventional incandescent lamps. The lamps have a standard E27 or E26 fitting allowing them to be used in existing installations, avoiding unnecessary modifications and reducing set-up costs. Source: lighting.philips
  13. Testing of OLED Luminaires The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released CALiPER Report 24: Photometric Testing, Laboratory Teardowns, and Accelerated Lifetime Testing of OLED Luminaires, which is the first CALiPER report evaluating the performance of OLED luminaires based on independent procurement and testing. Among the findings: Overall, efficacy of the OLED luminaires was low compared to contemporary LED luminaires, ranging from 23 lm/W up to 45 lm/W. OLED panels range between 42 and 55 lm/W according to panel manufacturer data, and much of the efficacy reduction in the luminaire performance is due to very inefficient transformer and driver selections and combinations. The wider availability of dedicated OLED drivers should improve efficacies in the near future. Light distribution was consistent among the tested products – a soft, diffuse, roughly Lambertian emission, moderated only by the physical configuration of the luminaire hardware. This is expected to produce very soft shadows from objects in the path of the light, and patterns of light on surfaces with very soft gradients at the edges of the “beam.” The drivers for all four CALiPER luminaire types were different, with some luminaires using a single driver and others using a combination of electronic components for voltage transformation, conversion from AC to DC, and voltage/current control. The OLED luminaires performed very closely to the manufacturers’ published technical data, where available. OLED panels, drivers, and transformers are still in a steep curve of development. Goals are higher efficacy; longer life, before panel replacement on the jobsite is needed; better lumen maintenance over time; even better color quality and wider CCT options; higher-efficiency drivers; and robustness under high temperature, high humidity, and rough handling from shipping and installation. Improvements in these areas could make OLED luminaires more accepted in the architectural marketplace, and adopted as a trusted lighting solution. 15. New LED lights on Niagara Falls “We're lighting a world icon.” “We believe this new lighting will attract repeat visitors and attract new visitors to come see the falls in a much more elaborate way.” New lighting, which will illuminate the American falls, has already been installed in the lower gorge and work is almost completed on installing the new system to the illumination tower beside Queen Victoria Place which will focus on the Horseshoe Falls. Also, light panels are being added to the top of Table Rock which will shed light on the lip of the Horseshoe Falls. “We've been trying to shine light through the mist for many, many years,” Adames said. “Now, with the lights on Table Rock, we can provide an even light treatment of the Horseshoe Falls.” Recent high profile events such as the Nik Wallenda high wire walk and Red Bull Crashed Ice – where organizer used their own equipment to illuminate the Falls - demonstrated how enhanced lighting could better showcase the falls at night. “We could have continued to use the xenon lights,” Adames said. “However, LED technology has come a long way and it's only recently we were able to identify companies that could bring forward a lighting solution.” Following a Request for Qualifications and a Request for Proposal process, a consortium of firms comprised of ECCO Electric Ltd., Salex Inc., Mulvey & Banani Lighting Inc., Sceneworks and Stanley Electric was selected in February. Construction began in September. Financial support for the multi-million dollar project came from both government and local tourism stakeholder groups in both Canada and the United States. “We are very fortunate to have community stakeholders on both sides of the border who have supported our vision since the project was first proposed,” said Mark Thomas, chairman of the Niagara Falls Illumination Board and western district director of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. “The improvement to the nightly illumination of the Falls will encourage visitation to Niagara and we appreciate the stakeholders recognizing the importance of this project for the destination.” Niagara Falls Coun. Wayne Thomson, chairman of Niagara Falls Tourism, said he's been pushing for new lighting for the past seven years. “I'd be having dinner at the falls with my wife and my wife and other people would look over and asking when the lights come on... they had been on for two hours. All you saw was a little bit of grey and the mist in the centre. It was very unimpressive.” His began campaigning for enhanced lighting in early 2009 after he drove across the Rainbow Bridge and noticed the Horseshoe Falls were bathed in bright light. “It was phenomenal,” he recalled. “The falls were lit up like you wouldn't believe.” Thomson later learned the lights were particularly bright that night because local magician Greg Frewin was on site filming a television special. Thomson said the new lighting will be a “huge game changer” for the city. “People come here to see the falls and the parks system and all the other attractions in the region and they all want to go down and see the illumination of the falls in the evening,” he said. “(The illumination) has been totally unimpressive for many years. The new lighting, in my opinion will bring worldwide publicity and will draw people here from around the world.” An official lighting ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 1. The new lights were originally to be unveiled during the Winter Festival of Lights launch Nov. 19. More information: niagarafallsreview.ca
  16. How to Build a Cool DIY Ring-Light for Just $25 On this video Matthew Perks from the popular Youtube DIY channel DIY Perks, demonstrates an interesting photography/videography related lighting DIY project for building an inexpensive ring light from LEDs. Perks didn’t use heat-sinks for the LEDs – this can be a problem as LEDs get very hot very quickly so it is very much recommended that you do connect heat-sinks to remove access heat. As always – these sorts of DIY projects can be dangerous (LEDs can easily melt and batteries might explode if they get too how) so do this at your own risk and only if you know what you are doing!

  21. On October 13, 2016, Boston mayor, Martin J. Walsh unveiled the new LED-based architectural lighting of Boston City Hall. The lighting debut was during this year’s final Beer Garden on the Bricks event, themed “Light Bright Beer Garden.” The city intends the new LED lighting to highlight and enhance the building’s original design and increase public safety. The exterior lighting installation is one among several ongoing initiatives to highlight City Hall and City Hall Plaza and make them more inviting for residents. “I am proud that for the first time in its 48 year history, Boston City Hall is going to shine,” said Mayor Walsh. “This state of the art lighting system will help make City Hall the civic heart of our city by livening up the plaza, while making the area safer and connecting us to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Bringing new light to City Hall is symbolic of a more responsive vision here at City Hall, one that is meant to be engaging, inspiring, and serve as a beacon of the city and our values.” New LED fixtures replaced the original Metal Halide exterior recessed lighting and the existing floodlights that illuminate the building’s lower levels and accentuate the entrances. The new fixtures cover the building in a warm white light, and they can produce a broad range of colors. Such color options can allow the City to light the building to acknowledge a variety of celebratory and public events. The mayor lit the building blue to recognize the police officers injured in East Boston, and as a further demonstration of its light changing capability, the mayor changed the color to pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pink lights at city hall added to pink lighting of numerous buildings and landmarks around the city. The lighting highlights the original three-part design of City Hall. The lower levels house the public spaces of the building. The symbolic spaces including the middle sections hold the offices of the Mayor and the City Council, and the administrative spaces crown the building and house the administrative functions of government. According to the city, the new exterior lighting improves security lighting. The city says that the system allows for the floodlights and associated conduit added to the building over the years to be entirely removed. “By illuminating its iconic and bold form, City Hall’s interaction with Boston’s urban fabric may be reinvigorated,” said David Eisen FAIA, Boston Society of Architects/AIA (BSA) Vice President for Communications. “It’s a decisive step toward transforming one of the most internationally renowned buildings that make up our distinct architectural heritage.” The new fixtures are more energy efficient than the Metal Halide fixtures and the existing Flood Lights that they replace. The LED lighting is expected to save the city about 300,000 kWh of electricity annually compared to the replaced lights. The LED technology has a projected 20-year lifespan compared to the 4-year life of the metal halide lights that the LED system replaces. The City expects additional savings from the cost of maintenance and light replacement. Arcade lights have also been retrofitted with LED lighting to complement the new City Hall lighting. The same controller will be able to operate and coordinate both the arcade lights and the City Hall lights. “It is wonderful that the City is taking this opportunity to recreate its own home place – City Hall – as the keystone and central event in an ongoing pursuit of improved illumination for our city,” said Todd Lee, President of LIGHT Boston. 22. 1000-Watt LED Floodlight Provides Fantastic Nighttime Video Effects Along with drone technology and the advancement of user-modified drones, another thing that has also been evolving is LED technology and the way people use it. In this four-minute video, you will see a good example of the combination of these two technologies, as Stratus Productions mounted a 1000-watt LED light to a Freefly Systems Alta 8 drone. The story of building the 1000-watt LED bar started last year, and in this video, it is attached to a drone for its first flight. As it's told in the video, with some battery modification, both the drone and the LED bar can run for about ten minutes. Taking the required power into consideration, ten minutes of running time sounds miraculous. In addition to lighting aerial videos at night, this experimental system (or builds similar to this system) can also be used for a variety of other purposes, from lighting subjects at any time of the day when shooting from the ground to aiding in search and rescue activities. If you have any LED-based custom-modification experience with drones, please share it with us in the comments below. For some gorgeous sample footage shot with this rig, skip straight to the two-minute mark in the video.
  23. LED Street Lights May Be Damaging To Your Health LEDs are replacing yellow street lamps in an attempt to save energy. But medical experts say LEDs could be damaging to our health Health authorities had issued warnings about LED street lighting. Yellow street lights are being replaced by white LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights to save energy. But according to the American Medical Association (AMA), LEDs could be damaging to our health, affecting sleep and vision. In an official statement, which was adopted unanimously at the AMA's annual meeting in Chicago earlier this month, the AMA addressed issues about the new LED street lighting in the country.
• Контроллер «Cool Neon Total Control Lighting Pixel strand of 50 (TCLPXL50)» обеспечивающий полный контроль светодиодами с дистанционным управлением.
