  1. 2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of The Summer of Love. To celebrate, Illuminate founder and CEO Ben Davis wants to transform Market Street into a rainbow of multicolored lights from Embarcadero to Van Ness. From the same non-profit that brought us the Bay Lights, the new LED project, Lightrail, will consist of a two-mile long stretch of luminous cables that will run 18 feet above the street, reflecting the real-time movement of BART and Muni trains in the subway tunnels below ground. Strips of LEDs would extend from existing utility poles up the length of Market Street from the Embarcadero to the Castro, showing swiftly moving flashes of color each time a BART or Muni train exited a station underneath the street, with different colors indicating the different lines. The installation has already been approved to last for four years, with a proposed budget of $12 million. Illuminate hopes to raise at least $10 million in private philanthropy, much the same way they raised funds, twice, to install and then re-install the Bay Lights. "Once we've collected all the money, it would take six months to built the Lightrail" added Davis. Georges Zisiadis and Stefano Corazza are the local artists behind the installation. Davis met Zisiadis after a celebration for the Bay Lights and was amazed by the idea of LightRail. "This is as important as Bay Lights or maybe more important," said Davis at an event last week. "We want this to be a provocation to people to continue down Market Street." With Lightrail, Illuminate also plans to retrofit the historic Path of Gold streetlights, from the Ferry Building to the rainbow flag in the Castro, with new energy-efficient LED bulbs that will cut energy use by 80%. // To know more about Lightrail and ask for a private demo visit illuminate.org or lightrail.org

  6. LED for Triemli hospital When the new ward block at Triemli hospital in Zurich is in full operation in 2015, 600 Sanapro luminaires equipped with LED modules and LED drivers from Tridonic will be used to illuminate the patient rooms. Location: Zurich/Switzerland. Products: Modules LLE, LED Drivers LCAI, DALI-RM For the patient rooms in the new ward block the architects Aeschlimann Hasler Partner and the lighting designers at Reflexion AG looked for a special luminaire that would meet the requirements of patients, doctors, nursing staff and hospital administrators. Following their specifications, the engineers and designers at Prolux Licht AG developed a modular profile luminaire featuring lighting units for gentle room light, glare-free and shadow-free reading light and bright light from the head to the foot of the bed for medical examinations. Linear LLE LED modules from Tridonic are used as the light sources for all three lighting functions. Each luminaire is equipped with ten LED engines in two different versions. There is also a single LED that functions as a night light. With all the lighting functions activated at full luminous flux, the luminaire has a power draw of 126 W and provides a total luminous flux of 10,387 lumen. The LED engines are operated on two LED Drivers of type Driver LCAI one4all integrated in the luminaire housing. The lighting functions can be switched separately via DALI and also dimmed, with the exception of the night light. A Tridonic DALI control module is used to connect the night light to the DALI controller. This Zurich hospital will certainly not be the only place where Sanapro luminaires with their powerful and durable LED lighting and compact and easy-to-clean housing will be providing impressive results. Petrol Station Lighting Design • LED Lighting for Petrol Station

Petrol Station Lighting – Attract Business From The Road One of the best ways to improve the roadside appeal of your business is to upgrade to energy-efficient LED lighting. LED technology is designed to provide long-lasting, high-quality illumination while lowering energy consumption and maintenance requirements. Teaming up with ACAPMA-partner Advanced Lighting Technologies (ADLT), we recently looked at a number of long-lasting, energy-efficient LED luminaires that can improve the internal lighting within your fuel retailing business while lowering your energy usage and maintenance bills at the same time. In the second article of a two-part series, we’ll look at the options available for fuel retailers to light up external areas of their business. CANOPY / FORECOURT With their target audience often driving past at speeds of up to 110 km/h, first impressions really do count for fuel retailers, and the canopy / forecourt area of your fuel retailing business is often the first chance you have to make a genuine impression on potential customers. It’s typically the most visible part of the property and can often be seen from furthest away. A bright, uniformly lit canopy can also reduce the risk of accidents and theft. ADLT offer a range of lighting solutions suitable for installation in single and double skin canopies, soffits and other roof types, including the revolutionary Cree CPY Series. An industry leader, the Cree CPY250 LED luminaire now offers higher performance and greater value than ever before, backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty. Another option from Cree (one of the world’s leading lighting manufacturers) is the 304 Series, specifically designed for installation into canopies and soffits. With near maintenance-free operation and lifetime energy savings, the 304 Series is ultra-efficient and suitable for both upgrades and new construction. GENERAL SITE & SECURITY LIGHTING Perimeter and security lighting not only help to keep your business safely lit, they also provide an opportunity to make an impression from the road and display your brand prominently. Well-lit parking spaces, walkways and other amenities can make customers feel safe and welcome when entering your premises ADLT offer a wide range of external lighting options designed to provide an excellent quality of light with a fraction of the energy used by traditional lamps. One such example is the Cree Edge High Output Area & Flood Light. Featuring industry-leading 90 CRI (colour rendering index) colour quality, the Cree Edge High Output Series provides remarkable illumination and redefine what high output lighting performance can be. The Cree XSP Series were redesigned from scratch as totally-optimized LED luminaires, delivering incredible efficiency without sacrificing application performance. The XSP Series Wall Mount is suitable to displace obsolete technologies by up to 175W, while the XSP Series Area Light is an ideal replacement for outdated high-pressure sodium fixtures from 70W up to 400W. Rounding out their series of incredible area & flood lights, the Cree OSQ Series blends extreme optical control with advanced thermal management and modern clean aesthetics. Available in both medium and large sizes, the OSQ’s slim low-profile design minimizes wind load requirements and blends seamlessly into its surrounds, providing impressive light quality and high versatility at an extremely affordable price. Despite spruiking the values of a well-lit fuel business, rest assured that ADLT haven’t forgotten about unwanted light pollution upsetting the neighbours. ADLT CEO, Richard Langdon explains: “All of Cree’s external lighting products come with a range of optics, meaning light can be targeted exactly where it’s required, reducing unwanted spillage and glare” DOWNLOAD OUR PETROL STATION BROCHURE VISIT OUR SPECIALTY PETROL STATION LIGHTING WEBSITE Original: adlt.com.au
  8. What Is OLED Lighting: And How Is It Different from LEDs? LED lighting has been a key factor in the energy-use revolution over the last decade. It’s amazing to think that something as innocuous as a light bulb has been at the forefront of educating consumers on how technology can cut our carbon footprint and improve our homes and businesses. In just a few years, LED lighting went from niche uses to mainstream. Helped in part by a significant drop in price, total installations of LED bulbs in American homes more than doubled from 77 million to 202 million in just one year. That figure is even more impressive when compared to the fewer than 400,000 installations in 2009. But will this dramatic shift from one technology to another repeat itself? Will our 25-year life span LED lightbulbs be obsolete in 10 years when another hot new green technology comes along? We won’t have to wait another decade to find out. That new technology is already here: organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs. Estimated to be a $1.3 billion market by 2023, OLED lighting works by using thin layers of organic compounds to emit light through electric currents. In contrast, LEDs predominantly use the chemical yellow phosphor. Score one for OLEDs on the green scale. OLEDs also have no UV rays, whereas LEDs have some. OLEDs differ significantly from LEDs in form. They are made in sheets that are incredibly thin and pliable, so they can be adapted to work in places LEDs can never go. They also emit light evenly, as opposed to the bright, concentrated light of LEDs—think the difference between a paintbrush and a pen. Does this mean OLEDs are going to replace LEDs as a greener, cleaner light source? In short, no. But they will augment and enhance the quest for ultimate lighting efficiency. Due to technical limitations, OLEDs are not, and likely won’t ever be, available in the traditional bulb style. They come as flat panels, which can be replaced as you would a light bulb. Here is an example of a consumer OLED lighting fixture: Source: motherearthnews
  9. The big switch: Abu Dhabi's plan to convert old lights to LEDs The retrofit to replace 42,632 inefficient lighting fixtures is one of the biggest plans of its kind in the world The white lights are the new LEDS, with the older yellow lights on the right in this shot of Abu Dhabi's Salam Street. Abu Dhabi Municipality If you live in Mushrif or the Capital Centre, then you could be among the first to have your old streetlamps replaced with LEDs. Abu Dhabi Municipality last month announced ambitious plans to replace 42,632 older, inefficient lighting fixtures across the island. It is one of the largest projects of its kind in the world. The older lights are mainly high pressure sodium or metal halide. They give off a familiar orange glow, but are also notoriously inefficient. The new LEDs, or luminaires, will be up to 90 per cent more efficient; cost 90 per cent less to maintain; and also will lead to an 80 per cent reduction in harmful CO2 emissions. The quality of light and the fact it is more even will make it better for drivers and pedestrians. “Electricity bills were so high with all the old lights,” said Eiman Alameri, from the municipal infrastructure and assets sector at Abu Dhabi Municipality. “They really consume a lot of energy – and Abu Dhabi wants everything to be more sustainable,” she said. The retrofit is set to start early next year once the tendering process is completed. Work will be undertaken in five phases across the island and each phase is expected to take three months. The island is set to be finished by the middle of 2019. Poles or foundations will not have to be touched and only the lighting fixture will have to be replaced. Newer projects on the island such as on Salam Street and on Yas Island for example already use LEDs and the new fixtures are expected to last for about 12 and a half years compared with two to three years for the older lights. “The project is one of the biggest of its type in the world,” said Martin Valentine, lighting expert at the municipality. Mr Valentine said the Abu Dhabi plan is way ahead of other global retrofits when it comes to the quality of light. “It’s not just about changing to save energy. We’re [also] improving the lighting on the roads. We’re reducing the pollution,” he said. Traditional street lights, known for their yellowish hue, will be relaunched with bright white LED lights across Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Municipality “A lot of other plans around the world are done purely on energy saving. They forget about the colour being too blue or light spilling into people’s houses. We are way ahead.” The initiative is also a public-private partnership. This is a relatively new phenomenon for the UAE but it is expected to become more widespread. Design, installation and maintenance will be taken care of by a private firm for a contract of about ten years. Then it's handed back to the municipality. “We want the private sector to be involved with the urban development of Abu Dhabi. We don’t want to have all the budgets coming from the government,” said Ms Alameri. While it is a public-private partnership, the municipality will retain control of the system. The retrofit includes the addition of a smart control system and it will yield consumption reports; identify failures; and allow lights to be dimmed at certain hours which will lead to even more savings. “These can be dimmed at times when traffic is quiet, after rush hour and between 1am and 5am,” said Mr Valentine. It is thought that there are 290,000 of the older lights still in use across the emirate. When the island retrofit is completed, it is believed that other areas of the emirate will be next. Local authorities around the word have been looking at introducing LEDs to cut costs. In some cities, such as Rome, residents have complained that harsh white light emanating from these new LEDs has distorted the ambience of the city. But for Mr Valentine, crude implementation is to blame. There are nine colour temperature options when it comes to LEDs, and these range from warmer yellow light to a harsh blue light. “You have to look at colour temperature. A historic city centre and a main road are completely different things. We encourage warmer colours for the streets,” said Mr Valentine. “We are not going too cold on the colour temperatures as some cities have and they’ve done that to save money. We banned the cold blue white colours from Abu Dhabi. We’ve got a neutral white colour which is the most efficient warm colour. "Maybe a lot of cities haven’t thought about the social and environmental aspects as well as the economic. It’s important all three are looked at in every design.” Source: thenational

Low ceiling. What is the best lighting?

Lovely lighting is all about creating mood and atmosphere and making sure that you have bright light just where you need it. If it is going to be a bedroom you will need general lighting for getting dressed and task lighting for reading in bed. An office or playroom is likely to be used more during the day and will require stronger general lighting and task lighting at your desk. Avoid pendant or surface-mounted lights that restrict your headroom and make the ceiling feel even lower. A grid of evenly-spaced spotlights across the ceiling is a popular solution but will create a flat, bright light that doesn’t look great and can feel quite exhausting. Much better to angle your spotlights to wash light up and down the walls. This will provide a more interesting mix of light and shade, making the space feel lively and appealing. LED lights tucked in front of books, or behind artwork on shelves works well too. Dimmers are essential, giving you the flexibility to adjust the level of light to the time of day and the mood that you want to achieve. If you have a large loft space, think about zoning, making good use of plug-in solutions. LED lighting tucked inside cupboards and shelves is a better option than ceiling lights positioned behind you, which create a shadow precisely where you need your light to fall. In the loft use a spotlight to create a focal point highlighting a favourite piece of artwork or choose decorative lighting instead. Fairy lights and playful designs are perfect for children’s bedrooms and playrooms.
  11. On October 13, 2016, Boston mayor, Martin J. Walsh unveiled the new LED-based architectural lighting of Boston City Hall. The lighting debut was during this year’s final Beer Garden on the Bricks event, themed “Light Bright Beer Garden.” The city intends the new LED lighting to highlight and enhance the building’s original design and increase public safety. The exterior lighting installation is one among several ongoing initiatives to highlight City Hall and City Hall Plaza and make them more inviting for residents. “I am proud that for the first time in its 48 year history, Boston City Hall is going to shine,” said Mayor Walsh. “This state of the art lighting system will help make City Hall the civic heart of our city by livening up the plaza, while making the area safer and connecting us to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Bringing new light to City Hall is symbolic of a more responsive vision here at City Hall, one that is meant to be engaging, inspiring, and serve as a beacon of the city and our values.” New LED fixtures replaced the original Metal Halide exterior recessed lighting and the existing floodlights that illuminate the building’s lower levels and accentuate the entrances. The new fixtures cover the building in a warm white light, and they can produce a broad range of colors. Such color options can allow the City to light the building to acknowledge a variety of celebratory and public events. The mayor lit the building blue to recognize the police officers injured in East Boston, and as a further demonstration of its light changing capability, the mayor changed the color to pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pink lights at city hall added to pink lighting of numerous buildings and landmarks around the city. The lighting highlights the original three-part design of City Hall. The lower levels house the public spaces of the building. The symbolic spaces including the middle sections hold the offices of the Mayor and the City Council, and the administrative spaces crown the building and house the administrative functions of government. According to the city, the new exterior lighting improves security lighting. The city says that the system allows for the floodlights and associated conduit added to the building over the years to be entirely removed. “By illuminating its iconic and bold form, City Hall’s interaction with Boston’s urban fabric may be reinvigorated,” said David Eisen FAIA, Boston Society of Architects/AIA (BSA) Vice President for Communications. “It’s a decisive step toward transforming one of the most internationally renowned buildings that make up our distinct architectural heritage.” The new fixtures are more energy efficient than the Metal Halide fixtures and the existing Flood Lights that they replace. The LED lighting is expected to save the city about 300,000 kWh of electricity annually compared to the replaced lights. The LED technology has a projected 20-year lifespan compared to the 4-year life of the metal halide lights that the LED system replaces. The City expects additional savings from the cost of maintenance and light replacement. Arcade lights have also been retrofitted with LED lighting to complement the new City Hall lighting. The same controller will be able to operate and coordinate both the arcade lights and the City Hall lights. “It is wonderful that the City is taking this opportunity to recreate its own home place – City Hall – as the keystone and central event in an ongoing pursuit of improved illumination for our city,” said Todd Lee, President of LIGHT Boston. 12. Human Centric Lighting The circadian rhythm is our biological clock, which in turn is synchronised by the day-night cycle and the change between light and dark. It not only promotes restful sleep at night, but is also responsible for performance levels and physical wellbeing during the day. VS LED systems actively support this biorhythm with chip-on-board modules (COB) that differ from conventional light sources by providing a dynamically adjustable light spectrum that specifically affects the human organism. The module can alternate between the following two light modes: • Biodynamic lighting with adjustable colour temperatures that facilitates the suppression of melatonin. • Lighting that does not influence the release of melatonin, with adjustable colour temperatures. BIODYNAMIC LED LIGHTING Light influences both physical and emotional wellbeing Humans are diurnal beings whose performance levels are deter-mined by the natural daynight cycle, in which regard daylight plays a decisive role in regulating bodily functions. Special retinal ganglion cells serve as receptors for nonvisual light stimuli that influence health and wellbeing. Source: vossloh-schwabe

  14. Petrol Station Lighting – Stand Out Among The Crowd With over 6,000 retail fuel outlets currently in operation in Australia, consumers are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding where to stop for fuel and convenience items. As a result, it’s crucial that fuel retailers provide a clean, safe and visually-striking service station that attracts as many customers as possible. One of the best ways to improve the roadside appeal of your business is to upgrade to energy-efficient LED lighting. LED technology is designed to provide long-lasting, high-quality illumination while lowering energy consumption and maintenance requirements. Over the next few weeks, we’ll look at the benefits of installing LED light fittings both internally and externally within your fuel retailing business, and what it could mean for your bottom line. This initial article will focus on internal applications, while the next will focus on canopy and external lighting. TURN BROWSERS INTO BUYERS You should aim to make your retail setting as inviting as possible. A great lighting solution should create a comfortable, uniform environment that customers are happy to spend time in, but also allow them to find the items they need quickly and exit. It’s equally as important to evenly highlight product displays and important amenities such as ATMs and coffee facilities, avoiding shadowy spots and dark corners caused by inconsistent or unmaintained lighting. A lighting solution featuring a high colour rendering index (CRI) will display your fresh fruit, foods, beverages and other items as they were intended to be seen – with bright, full and vibrant colours that seem too good to be true. Switching to LED lighting can provide both the benefits mentioned above and more; LED light fittings use just a fraction of the energy required by traditional lighting, reducing operational costs. LED technology is also designed to last longer – meaning less money spent on maintaining your lighting system. SEEING THE LIGHT Advanced Lighting Technologies (ADLT) offers a wide-range of LED lighting solutions perfect for internal retail applications, including the Cree CR series LED troffer. Available in 3 sizes and in a variety of lumen level outputs, the Cree CR Series offers excellent colour rendering via Cree’s TrueWhite technology to make your merchandise really stand out, while providing significant energy savings and years of near maintenance-free service. “The CR Series offer great-looking light while reducing energy consumption,” shared ADLT CEO, Richard Langdon. “In fact, we were so impressed that we’ve installed them in our own premises.” We also offer a range of Cree LED downlights that blend beauty and performance to provide superior light quality over a long life. 15. Osram LED pillars provide the basis for Smart City networking Modern LED City Light pillars equipped with the Street Light Control system and Einstone technology from Osram were installed in a city-wide intelligent network to form the basis for the Wipperfürth Smart City project. Luminaires transmit information via Bluetooth signal that is then recorded and processed by the new WippApp. Smartphone users that have downloaded the app can access a diversity of information such as offers from retailers, information about companies and much more. The town of Wipperfürth began to upgrade its complete road lighting across several construction stages to energy-efficient LED technology in 2010. Now the Hanseatic town in "Bergisches Land" has created a further pioneering project together with Osram. In addition to further LED modernisation, the project also aims at intelligently networking the urban road lighting. The photometric base unit for intelligent LED road lighting is modern City Light pillars from Siteco equipped with the efficient 540 Plus LED module. To make the nocturnal appearance of the town even more appealing, the pillars have a supplementary linear RGB module that can be individually controlled with the Street Light Control software. This enables specific coloured light scenarios to be created in the city centre. The complete software infrastructure is stored in a cloud. An Osram Einstone transmitter is also integrated in the lower area of the luminaire’s top unit. This emits a Bluetooth signal that is received by smartphones and can be used with a corresponding app. Einstone technology enables site-related services by linking it with the Wipperfürth app, and users of the app can simply and conveniently access location-specific special features, the offers of associated retailers and general information. "Street luminaires offer the ideal infrastructure for this because they’re distributed throughout a town or city in a tight grid," said Andreas Pickelein, Project Manager, Osram Lighting Solutions. "Power is also available. When the luminaires light up the road at night the Einstone battery recharges, enabling the device to have sufficient operating voltage during the day" he added. The extensive range of Smart City functions for urban lighting can also be expanded, for example by integrating environment sensors or sensors helping users when searching for parking spaces. Harris Architecture was mandated to design the new space with the goal of increasing production capacity. As well as being a fully functional brewery, the Paso Robles location also offers tours to visitors, and after an 8-month construction period, the new addition was opened to the public in May, 2017. “The whole space has a turn of the century iron works style,” said Kyle Harris, who led the project for Harris Architecture. “There is a lot of galvanized metal and exposed bolts combined with tiling and concrete floors. It’s retro with a tech edge.” The team from Harris worked closely with the Firestone Walker founders to ensure that every element of the new space was on point from a design and usability perspective. Everyone involved in the project was very conscious of choosing the right pieces to present the facility as the iconic, signature location in the Firestone Walker family of facilities. Lighting the space was an important piece of the design. The lighting had to be functional as well as fitting aesthetically with the design intent of the space. In collaboration with Prudential Lighting Products, the Harris team identified Luminis products as the perfect solution. Luminis’ Torx and Aramis products were chosen. Twelve Torx TR2450 pendants were selected to illuminate the brew deck. The Torx TR2450 products are decorative and functional ceiling pendants with a frosted acrylic refractor and an LED light source. Delivering more than 12,000 lumens per product, the pendants are ideal for areas where efficiency, reliability and aesthetics are important. To carry the aesthetic throughout the facility, two more Torx TR2450 pendants have been included in the visitor center. Four Aramis AR148 pendants were used for additional illumination, while thirteen wall-mounted Aramis AR148 luminaires are positioned around the perimeter of the room. Most of the Aramis AR148 wall mounted sconces are in pairs – one as an uplight, and one as a downlight in each pair – providing a striking accent. The 6” cylindrical luminaires have an LED light source and deliver 2,050 lumens. “Functionality and performance were key requirements in the lighting product selection,” said Harris. “The Torx and Aramis products from Luminis not only delivered on those requirements but also perfectly fit the industrial aesthetic in the rest of the building.” Outside of the building, Harris chose Luminis’ Syrios SY602 products, complete with LED light source and unique integral tilting mechanism for precise directional aiming. Used primarily to illuminate the Firestone Walker signage and accent the curved roof, the products really catch the eye. Finally, Eclipse Mini EC612 products illuminate the exterior of the main entrance providing the complete lighting experience from outside to inside – a testament to the wide array of interior and exterior products offered by Luminis. The Eclipse Mini EC612 models, durable and designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, are mounted to the wall either side of the front door and on the columns supporting the covered entry. All of the interior lighting is on a dimming channel, enabling adjustment depending on the time of day. During the night, brew house lighting is turned up to deliver 100 foot candles of light at floor level to assist with nightly cleaning. In the daytime, the lighting is scaled back to deliver 45-55 foot candles at floor level for standard use. “We did extensive calculations and modelling to make sure the lighting would be at the right level, and that we got the light in the places it was needed,” said Harris. “Inside the brew house the lighting hits the metal and the stainless steel brew tanks, and the results are striking.” The reaction of the client has also been positive. Firestone Walker Co-Founder David Walker said: “The lighting is industrial, beautiful and functional; not an easy combination to achieve when lighting a modern brew house – it is elegantly done.” Source: luminis

  20. 20,000 LEDs light up ACU's quad Abilene Christian University’s new Lightwalk combines art and science to create a unique and interactive space on campus. College quads are usually reserved for tossing frisbees and studying but often go unused, especially at night. Abilene Christian University (ACU) wanted to illuminate the McGlothlin quad and create a new way of engaging with the university community by combining science, technology, and art. Dubbed Lightwalk, their innovative solution is an outdoor light installation that provides students, faculty, staff, and visitors with a unique gathering space throughout the day and night. According to Brent Reeves, ACU Associate Professor of Management Science and Computer Science, “The thing that excites me the most about this is the integration of hardware and software and art.” Built in partnership with interactive agency Viget, Lightwalk invites both physical and digital interaction of special light reeds through sensing, internet-connected hardware, a mobile web app, and a hackable back end program for students to experiment. Lightwalk development began after a grant in honor of the McGlothlin family asking for an art installation on the quad that would complement the nearby Onstead Science Center. Led by faculty, students, and the ACU MakerLab, the aim was to create an interactive exhibit and accompanying hackable software to take advantage of the latest in "Internet of Things" technology. Viget helped ACU develop the hardware components, including the 35 master nodes, 350 light reeds, 20,000 smart LEDs, 32 infrared sensors, and 3 temperature sensors that power the installation, as well as the software applications and firmware upon which all interactions and displays are driven. The strangely organic-looking and encompassing Lightwalk is already attracting students as an interesting meeting place. Computer science students are able to code, test, and send their own light effects. Others in the ACU community can control the installation through their mobile devices, determining the pattern, color, and level of physical interaction. More info at viget.com/work/lightwalk

  25. The 5 Biggest Myths in LED Lighting In their early stages, most new technologies are the subjects of myths that are either exaggerations or inaccuracies, if they are not altogether incorrect. LED lighting has been the subject of many myths since the first installations of LED systems appeared several years ago. Many of those myths denigrated LED lighting on the basis of cost and performance. As LED technology has improved, early-stage problems have disappeared but the myths have remained. Rather than falling prey to those myths, organizations that are considering LED lighting for their own operations should base their decisions on objective facts about modern LED lighting systems. Myth: LED lighting is expensive. Fact: As with many new technologies, the first generations of LED lighting systems were costlier than traditional metal halide or high-pressure sodium alternatives. Upfront acquisition and installation costs have since fallen dramatically and LED retrofits or new installations can now be completed at competitive price points to those traditional systems. Moreover, LED lighting generates the same or better illumination with substantially lower power input. Upfront system costs are usually recovered very quickly from utility cost savings alone. Myth: Light from LED bulbs is too harsh or bright. Fact: New LED bulbs and control systems give operators much more flexibility to alter the color temperature and color coordinated index (“CCI”) of LED illumination to tone down the perceived harshness that might have plagued earlier LED systems. Modern fixtures and lenses also help to disperse lighting and to reduce glare from brighter bulbs. Myth: All LED bulbs are identical. Fact: LED bulbs include more complex technology than incandescent or fluorescent fixtures. Quality LED manufacturers push that technology to produce better and longer-lasting products that incorporate features such as advanced thermal control and more stable electronics. Some LED systems might cost less than others, but those lower-cost systems might not have the newest technology that creates improved lighting performance. Myth: LED lamps never need to be replaced. Fact: LED’s last substantially longer than traditional lighting fixtures, but the will need to be replaced at some point. On average, LED bulbs will perform above a minimum illumination level for 50,000 hours. Many continue to generate light beyond this average lifespan, but their total light output will be lower than when they were first brought into service. Facilities that install LED lighting systems will continue to need to plan for maintenance and replacement, but those needs will be substantially reduced in comparison to traditional lighting. Myth: LED lighting is bad for your health. Fact: Doctors’ groups did criticize early generations of LED light that had high concentrations of blue-wavelength lighting. Lighting in that wavelength tends to keep people alert and to interfere with circadian rhythms and sleep patterns. Newer LED systems have controls that allow operators to reduce blue wavelengths in favor of more calming orange or yellow lighting. Therefore the early criticisms are no longer as valid. Myth: LEDs have sub-par color rendering index properties Fact: Incandescents have a perfect color rendering index (CRI) of 100, so when alternative energy-saving lighting solutions like fluorescents came to the market, people were disappointed in the quality of the light. And rightly so. Many compact fluorescents have a low CRI of 50. Most LEDs have a solid CRI of 80, with High CRI options available when color rendering is very important (like in restaurants, retail stores, galleries, etc). Our LED MR16, for example, has an incredible High CRI option of 95, so colors appear as vibrant to the eye as under broad daylight. Source: specgradeled
